June 22, 2022
Anchorage, AK
Bridget Kline passed away on June 15, 2022 at her family home in Eagle River, AK, after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Throughout that struggle she constantly thanked clergy, family, friends, medical professionals, and caregivers for their outpouring of prayers, encouragement, and care. The kind efforts of those reaching out to her from near and far gave her great comfort and courage in her final days. Bridget was born on May 13, 1948 at her family's traditional springtime camp across the Yukon River to the south of Mt. Village, AK. As an infant she was not able to be taken to her home village until the ice broke and cleared the Yukon River. Her earliest years growing up in Mt Village were spent learning and participating in the Yupik skills and traditions necessary to support the subsistence lifestyle of that time. Although she attended her first years of school in Mt Village, her family decided to move to St Marys, AK, where there were better educational opportunities for their children at the Catholic Mission School. There Bridget excelled in her studies and graduated from St Marys Mission High School in 1967. She was highly encouraged by the school clergy and teachers to attend college. Bridget entered the College of Great Falls in Montana in 1967 and received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology in 1972. At that time, she became the third person from her high school to obtain a four year college degree. After graduation and upon her return to Alaska, Bridget began work as a BIA social worker stationed in Bethel, AK. She also met her future husband, Dennis Kline, that same year, and they were married in May of 1974 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Bethel. Bridget's administrative talent as well as her Yupik language and life experience soon were recognized and sought after by other employers. These factors shaped both her professional and family life throughout her adult years. She worked as a School Social Worker for the Bethel Schools, the Director of Mental Health for the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation, and Director of Student Services for the Kuskokwim College Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. However, Bridget always sought and maintained an important balance between her career and family. As a mother she delayed and spaced her professional careers to raise each of her three children until they reached school age. Moreover, Bridget also made time to stay in contact with her parents, Winifred and Billy, and brothers and sisters on the Yukon River. Almost every year she attended potlatch ceremonies and dance festivals in the Winter and supported both fishing and berry picking activities in the Summer on the Yukon. The traditional Yupik subsistence skills which she learned as a child were perfected with her family on the Yukon and seasonally carried on her entire adult life. When Bridget and Dennis moved from Bethel to Eagle River, AK, to continue his military career in the Alaska Army National Guard, she made the decision to leave her employment with UAF, support her husband in his NG Career, and take the time to pursue her passion for sewing qaspeqs and traditonal style jackets. The dedication and talent she brought to these tasks and crafts were constantly recognized by Guard members, their spouses, State legislators, board members, and her loyal customers throughout Alaska. A significant change in Bridget and Dennis's life occurred when they adopted their 10-year-old grandson, Isaiah, in 2010. Plans of a leisurely retirement were altered, but only in a joyful, exciting, and positive way, blessed with another son to raise in our home. Bridget knew how to skillfully manage her time in providing loving care for a young son and still carry on her passion for sewing kuspuks, golfing with Dennis, and "aqum'luten" with sisters and friends. Bridget is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dennis. Daughter Kathleen (Byron) Leu and family, Son Isaiah, Brother Norby Beans and family, Sisters Susie (Larry) Mike, Agnes (Ed) Bostrom, Mary Beans and family, Bay (Walkie) Johnson and family, many nieces and nephews and numerous relatives and lifelong friends.
