Wayne Paul Barrett, age 64, of Concrete, Washington resident, passed away April 29, 2023 in a car accident. He was born in Malta, Montana to Wayne Lee and Arlene Rachel (Rustad) Barrett. He spent many time on his family ranch and referred to it as the best times of his life; the place he always called "home. " Wayne graduated from Great Falls High School in 1976. Received his bachelors in industrial arts from Northern Montana University. During his time in college he was part of the wrestling team. Then he went on to receive his masters in education. Wayne spent many years at Pasco High School as a shop teacher. One of his greatest accomplishments was building jet boats with the students. He then went on to be Pasco High School vice principal, then to Kiona Benton High school principal, then to Omak alternative school principal and shop teacher where he brought back the legacy of his boats. Finally he finished his career as Concrete School District superintendent. Mr. Barrett was a huge part of so many students, and fellow peers lives who he loved dearly. During this time he influenced many kids through his many years coaching wrestling and baseball. During his time in Pasco he started the well known Sand and Sage Retriever Club. He went on to run hunt tests and then field trials. His dogs meant the world to him and many of which were Master Hunters and Qualified all age dogs. Many of his greatest friends came from this world and some of his greatest memories of running dogs with his daughter Kamela were shared. A few years ago Wayne started to get back into the dogs when he and his daughter got labs again. He was very excited to retire and start this adventure again. Wayne was a beloved educator, principal, superintendent, father and most of all grandfather. Secondary to his family Wayne had a great love for all people and students he came across. Many knew him as stern but loving. He was always the first to help someone in need. Wayne was so excited to retire and get back to all the things he loved the most; hunting and family. He is survived by his daughters, Jene LaCroix, Kamela Kraemer son in law Josh Kraemer, son Seth Barrett, brother Scott Barrett sister in law Lisa Barrett, sister Kim Blunn brother in law Jim Blunn and grandchildren Morgan, Dominic, Chloe, Avery, Mason, Reghan, Jennavecia, Max, Ellie, Micah and Kasey. Gene Carl Shabnow, 88, of Concrete, WA peacefully went home to be with our Lord on April 11, 2023 at his son's home in Kenmore, WA with his family by his side. Gene was born Monday, March 18, 1935 in his family home in Toledo, OH to Jimmie and Mildred (Becking) Shabnow. He attended Burnham High in Sylvania, Ohio where he played 4 years of football, 2 of which they were the top football team, and they were highlighted in 2 Ohio newspapers. He was also the school mascot, a wildcat, in parades and also enjoyed taking pictures for the school newspaper. He graduated in 1953. He went into the Air Force January 14, 1954 wherein he was a Cadet for 2. 5 years for Special Training and also was stationed in Sidi Slimane, Morocco Africa for a year. He was Honorably discharged on November 15, 1957. After his discharge, he moved to Seattle, WA where he worked at Sy's gas station and attended Photo School where he met Joni Abel when another classmate brought her in to get her picture taken. After two dates he knew she was the girl he had been waiting for. They were engaged on October 5, 1958 and married March 7, 1959. They had four children, Cari, Sandi, Sheri and Tracey. Gene later was employed at the Boeing Airplane Company as an Industrial Photographer and worked there for many years. Later in life, on Sept. 26, 1981, he married Judy Brager in Machias, WA and had one child together Melissa, and gained a stepdaughter, Lisa Brager. Gene had many adventures in his life including flying in a WWI fighter plane over wetlands and climbing Mt Adams with his photography buddies. When he was younger, he rode his brother's motorbike from Ohio to Tennessee with just the clothes on his back. In addition, he rode with his brother Eddie to an Indianapolis race. While in the service he took a taxi to Mount Vesuvius, Italy and rode the ski lift up and saw planes flying lower than where he stood. He flipped homes before it was popular, he owned his own real estate firm, he owned a bar for a short time, he traveled around with his friend's small band as their manager, he drove around the US to all of the capitals with his nephew Jimmy Greenfield in 17. 5 days. Gene did a lot of travelling to places, some of his favorites included Hawaii and Las Vegas. He took a cruise up the Mississippi on a Sternwheeler and loved it. Gene had a love for the 1950s/yesteryear. He loved anything Western (movies, clothing, hats and music). He loved Casino's and Apple Pie. He enjoyed planning trips with detailed itineraries and most of all he loved his kids. In his later years, Gene enjoyed attending the Concrete Swap Meet and bartering with the locals. He also enjoyed collecting coins & postage stamps. He was passionate about collecting photos and articles of movie stars from his generation. His favorite television programs were Hogan's Heroes and Gunsmoke and he always got a kick out of Bevis and Butthead. His favorite movies were Maverick, and the Music Man. Gene is survived by his son, Tracey Shabnow (Tasha); daughters, Cari Ensley (Garry), Sandi Fifield (Kevin), Sheri Bland (Joe), Melissa Werner; brother, Edward Shabnow (Bobbie); grandchildren, Christopher Fifield, Cassidy Chism (Ryan), Joshua Ensley, Jacob Ensley, Jessy O'Day, Colby O'Day, Corbin Hinds, Caiden Hinds, Brennen Werner, Mason Werner; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence "Jimmie" Shabnow & Mildred Vogt; siblings, Jeannette Greenfield (Herb), Garnet Sarkisian (Joe); numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jo Anne Daniels May 8, 1939 - September 7, 2022 Our most precious Mama, Jo Anne (Higdon) Daniels passed away September 7, 2022, at the age of 83, at her home in Concrete surrounded by her loving family. Jo was born May 8, 1939, to Vera Lucille (Winfrey) Higdon and Lloyd Pius Higdon in Newberg, Oregon. Her parents were divorced when she was five and Jo, her little sister, Carol Sue and older brother, Carl shared time between her father's home in Newberg and her mother's home in Portland. Oh, the joy they experienced together playing in the creek! Jo never missed a chance to enjoy a beautiful creek or the beach and the joy she found in simple things such as a beautiful leaf we would find pressed into so many of her books. She spent her high school years in Portland, where she graduated from Jefferson High School and also met our father, Lloyd Leon Daniels through a close friend. They were married March 23, 1957, and after a few years moved to the family home in Portland in 1963, where they raised their children, Randy (Patricia) Daniels, Ronald Daniels, Debra (Wayne) Kitchen, Kenneth (Virginia) Daniels, Jimmy (Verna) Daniels and Donna (Glen) Litke. Jo moved to Concrete, WA in 1992, where after a study of the Bible, she carried out an earlier desire to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She had a strong faith in Jehovah's promise to bring about peaceful conditions for earths inhabitants (Psalm 37:10,11) and shared her hope openly with others. She always had a hearing ear and was intent on seeing the good in everyone. Jo is survived by her six children; eight grandchildren, John Daniels, Anthony Daniels, Cheyenne Daniels, Ryan Maxwell, Aaron Maxwell, Dyanna Littke, Trent Kitchen and Kenneth Daniels Jr. ; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd Higdon and Vera Weber; sister, Carol Sue; brother, Carl. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00, Saturday, October 29, 2022, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 48235 Moen Road, Concrete, WA. Shirley Jane Poe, age 92, passed away on September 15, 2022 in Concrete, Washington. She was born October 21, 1929 in Douglas, Wyoming to Forrest and Elva McCleerey. Shirley met her future husband, Samuel Poe, in Mesa, WA while her father was working on his family's farm. They were married in 1946 and spent many wonderful years together until his passing in 1997. They owned and worked on their farm and cattle ranch in Mesa for over 33 years. After their retirement they moved to Concrete, WA. She was a lifetime member of the Rebekahs as well as granges in Birdsview, WA and in areas around their farm in Mesa. Samuel and Shirley loved camping and they belonged to a camping club with many of their close friends. She also loved painting and some of her paintings still adorn her walls. Shirley was very loved and was an outstanding wife, mother and grandmother. She went above and beyond to help those around her and was one of the kindest people you could have the pleasure of knowing. Shirley is survived by her son, John Poe; grandson, Chad Poe; great-grandson, Nathan Poe; and her sister, Eva Palmer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Elva McCleerey; husband, Samuel Poe and her sisters, Gloria Nelson and Bobbie Dean. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Lemley Chapel, 1008 Third St, Sedro-Woolley, WA. Viewing will take place from 9:30 until 10:30 AM, prior to the Funeral Service, also at Lemley Chapel. Gladen 'Geep' Paul Norris, passed away at the age of 70 at his home with all his family by his side in Concrete, Washington, Sunday, July 10, 2022. he was born December 27, 1951, to Jack and Rosemary (Erchert) Norris. Gladen worked at Drake's mill from 1969-1976, as a mill wright and also built burners for mills. Then he went to work for Crown Pacific. He started working for LB&R Logging Company in 1984, driving logging trucks. He coached T-Ball and little league baseball with the kids he loved, then he became a boxing coach for the Skagit Valley Boxing Club. Gladen loved boating with family and friends in lakes and in Puget Sound. The family has wonderful memories of boating. Gladen also loved to tell his stories and they always got bigger and longer. He loved to get everyone to laugh. Gladen is survived by his wife, Vickie; son, Randy (companion, Melinda Hollifield) Norris; daughter, Ricki (Mathew) Roseberry; son, Clay (Melissa) Norris; grandkids, Ashley (Robert) Ferguson, Curtis (Kelsey) Hoyt, Austin Hoyt, Landon Norris, Maddy Norris; great grandkids, Annessa and Brantley Hoyt; brothers, Chris O'Bryan; sisters, Teri Huizenga and Lori Norris; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack; mother, Rosemary; stepfather, Paul O'Bryan; brother, Richard; twin sons, Curtis and Travis Norris. A Celebration of Gladen's life will be held at 1:00, on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at the Grassmere Fire Station, 44654 State SR 20, Concrete.
