Brett W. Mackey, 59 of Mount Morris, died Tuesday October 3, 2023 at Rock River Hospice & Home surrounded by family. Brett was born October 2, 1964 the son of John and Vera (Haas) Mackey. Brett enjoyed working with his hands, he had a passion for music, collecting coins and other unique items. He was a social butterfly, and would make friends with everyone he would meet. Most of all, he loved spending time with his daughter Brittany and his grandchildren. Survivors include one daughter Brittany (James) Mackey of Green Valley; two brothers Kevin (Helen) Mackey of Freeport, Toby (Cindy) of Harpersferry WV; four sisters Rita Taylor of Dakota IL, Wanda (Dennis) Gudith of St. Augustine FL, LaDonna (David) Bishop of Dixon, Lorena (Roger) Taylor of St. Augustine FL; three grandchildren Grayson, Remington, and Jonathon; and several nieces and nephews. Brett was preceded in death by his parents John (Vera) Mackey; three brothers Johnnie Mackey, Todd Mackey, Barry Mackey; two sisters Tina Boyle, and Jenny Schneider. Memorial services will be 1PM Saturday October 14, 2023 at Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation in Sterling, with the Rev. DR. Scott Porter of Abiding Word Church, officiating. He married Arie E. Peachey daughter of Jonathan C. and Katie (Peachey) Peachey on November 22, 1951. They lived in matrimony nearly 71 years. To their marriage were born seven children: Louis married to Darlene Erb of Milverton, ONT; Kathryn married to Lloyd Albrecht of Millbank, ONT; Lillian married to Jesse Hostetler of Laclede, MO; Wilmer married to Sue Miller of Mt Sterling, IL; Eunice married to Junior Yoder of Slaughters, KY, Ruth married to Perry Miller of Mt Sterling, IL; Allen married to Leanna Farmwald of Long Prairie, MN. Also surviving are 42 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 113 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister, 3 grandsons, 1 step-grandson, and 1 great-grandson. He was a member of the Siloam Springs Amish Mennonite Church. Visitation will be at the Siloam Springs Amish Mennonite School on Monday, December 4, 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at the Siloam Springs Amish Mennonite Church with the burial following at the Siloam Springs Amish Mennonite Church Cemetery. Darrell Ray Roley, age 82, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois and formerly of Shelbyville, Illinois passed away at 5:35 p. m. Monday, November 27, 2023 at the home of his son in Mt. Sterling. He was born January 15, 1941 in Shumway, Illinois the son of Harold W. and Emily D. Russell Roley. Darrell graduated from Stewardson Strasburg High School with the class of 1958. He served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1961 until 1967 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant prior to leaving the service. Darrell was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and was previously a member of the American Legion. He married Cheryl Cruit on August 19, 1962 and to this union two sons, Doug and Chad were born. Darrell worked at Shelby Electric Coop from 1972 until 2002 as a groundsman and then as a lineman. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan and Illini fan and always enjoyed playing golf and watching Nascar. Darrell is survived by two sons Doug Roley (Mary) of Ballwin, MIssouri and Chad Roley (Crystal) of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. One brother, Russ Roley (Anna) of Shumway, Illinois. One sister, Shirley McDonald of Shelbyville, Illinois. Five grandchildren Drew Roley, Courtney Roley (Jake), Reed Roley, Lilly Burge (Ryan), and Chesnee Roley. Three great grandchildren Connor, Emmi and Brynn also survive along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation will be accorded and private burial of the cremated remains with military honors will be held in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery. A celebration of life will also be held at a later date. Vernon "Bud" Johnson passed on Thanksgiving Day, November 23rd, at the age of 96, peacefully in his home, surrounded by family. Bud was born in Eldena, IL on May 25, 1927 to Benjamin Johnson and Florence (Fischer) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gladys McCann and brother Herman "Bub" Alber Jr. He is survived by two brothers, Dennis and Don Johnson. Bud leaves behind his only child, Pamela J. Baker. Bud also leaves behind his life partner, Elaine Simpson, and also his fur babies Mickey & Minnie. He will be missed by his four grandchildren, DeAnna M. Morris (Masterson), Roxanne L. Hanna (Masterson), Michael V. Baker, and Markus W. Baker, as well as his eight great grandchildren. Bud was a travel enthusiast and visited all 50 states in his lifetime. In his 96 years he enjoyed living in Illinois, Utah, and Arizona. Illinois was always "home" though. A great story teller, Bud loved to share memories of his time aboard the Harry F Bauer DM-26 during WWII, what it was like growing up a country boy in Illinois in a different time, and tales of raising Appaloosa horses with his daughter. He was proud of being a self-starter in his youth by owning a milk route, starting Mayflower Moving, driving truck around the country, and going on to building homes and remodeling houses as Johnson Construction in the Sauk Valley area. His last endeavor was building and owning the Bargain Barn furniture store. Bud was a lover of all animals and loved to watch birds. In his passing, Bud has left a gift fund for Happy Tails so his love of animals can live on. Due to his love of animals, in leu of flowers, he would have loved a donation rmade in his name to an animal shelter of your choice. Cremation rites have been accorded. Arrangements have been entrusted to Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling, IL. A celebration of life will be from 12:30PM until 2:30 PM on Saturday December 9, 2023 at the VFW in Dixon, IL. Linda Mae VanDuzen, 78, went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of Thursday, November 9, 2023 after an extended illness. Linda was born on July 24th, 1945 at the McNeil Hospital in Oak Park IL, the second child and first daughter of Thomas and Lois (Woldman) Mulder. Linda married the love of her life, Bill VanDuzen on November 5th, 1985. They spent many happy years having amazing adventures together, traveling, seeing new places and meeting new people until his death in August of 2017. After high school, Linda attended a technical college and was hired as a legal secretary, later to become a paralegal for Tedro and Gallano Law Firm in Chicago, IL. Then, until her retirement, Linda worked as a paralegal for the McDonalds Corporation in Oak Brook, IL, where she acquired many lifelong friends. Family was everything to Linda and she enjoyed hosting large gatherings, having those dear to her very near. She loved her family and friends, never forgetting a birthday or special occasion. She enjoyed giving gifts and cards and was genuinely excited to congratulate and celebrate each and every one of her loved ones on their joys and accomplishments. She will be remembered as someone who was creative, enthusiastic, and always willing to help others. She enjoyed nature, caring for animals and ensuring their kind treatment. Blessed were the strays that happened to cross her path, along with all the animals she kept as her own. Linda donated to several charities including childrens' care, disabled individuals, veterans and animal welfare organizations. Generous and kind, Linda was truly loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Survived by her son Scott (Dianne) Jernigan of Sykesville, MD; stepchildren William VanDuzen Jr. of MN, Jennifer (Bridson) Wills of Colorado Springs, CO, Pamela (Adam) Koziel of Ottawa, IL; grandchildren Scotty Jernigan, Erik Jernigan, Cole Jernigan; step grandchildren Joyce (Brandon) Klingberg, Nellie (Weilen) Lin, Stephanie (Justin) Scott, Alex Hunter, Sarah Cansino, Jessica Glover, Russell VanDuzen, Bridson Van (Merve) Wills, Kayla (Scott) Langel, Erik Grenemeier, Jake (Karly) Grenemeier, Alexander Koziel, Maxwell Koziel; siblings Thomas Mulder III, James (Gretchen) Mulder, Carol (Joe) Andronaco, Elaine (Ken) Robbins and many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband William VanDuzen, parents Thomas and Lois Mulder, brother Warren Mulder, step children Susan Hunter, Michael VanDuzen, Jeannie Grenemeier, step grandchildren infant Elizabeth Hunter, infant William VanDuzen III. Stephen A. Deckro Jr. , beloved husband, father, and attorney, peacefully departed this world on November 1, 2023, with his family by his side. He was born on February 14, 1940, in Valparaiso, Indiana, the eldest of five children born to Stephen and Mary Deckro. Stephen graduated from Valparaiso University and School of Law. He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves. In 1964, Stephen established his estate planning and tax law practice in Morrison, Illinois, where he would go on to serve his clients and community for nearly six decades, including his tenure as City Attorney of Morrison, Illinois. In 2014, he was awarded the esteemed title of Distinguished Counselor by the Illinois State Bar Association. He attended the Morrison Christian Church, where his faith was an important part of his life. Stephen's legacy lives on through the family he cherished. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sheryl. Stephen was a devoted father to three daughters, Stephanie (LT), Sarah, and Sydney (Kevin). In addition to his immediate family, Stephen treasured his four grandchildren: William, Michael, Vienna, and Vaughn. Stephen is survived by his brother, John (Mary Jo), and sister, Valeurie. He leaves behind many dear sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, brother, William and sister, Mary Katharine. Stephen's sharp wit and dry sense of humor remained with him until the end. His memory will forever remain in our hearts. Arrangements for a Celebration of Life are pending.Show more
