"Walter Suddath Hogan, 76, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024. Walter was born February 25, 1948, in Jefferson, GA, to H. T. and Annelle Hogan. He grew up in Jefferson and attended Jefferson High School. To be as far away from the University of Georgia as possible, he attended Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. He served as worthy scribe in his ATO fraternity and lived with 2 of his fraternity brothers while there. Walter met Helen Smith at GSU, who he would later marry, and fathered two wonderful sons. In Statesboro, he met his best friend, Kelly Jones, who he would spend the next 50+ years boating, water skiing, telling stories, and 'working' at the farm. After graduating from GSU, Walter began a long career with Delta Airlines that led to managerial positions in several areas at the Atlanta station. After 30+ years, many long commutes, and many life-long friendships, he retired from Delta. Walter then began his next 'career' at the Country Club of Gwinnett as the Golf Shop Manager, where he spent much time with friends and customers telling jokes and 'talking' golf. Walter loved the lake, golf, and the Atlanta Braves; but above all, he loved his family with all of his soul. He loved to engage people with stories about golf (and the day that he played Augusta National), family trips, sons' accomplishments, and his twin grandsons, Asher and Cooper. Walter coached many of his sons' recreational, winning basketball teams, was often a team Dad for Blake's high school football team and was President of the high school Touchdown Club. He also served as President of his neighborhood recreational association. For many years, Seekers Sunday School Class members enjoyed Walter's 'I'm Thankful For' Sunday School lesson at Thanksgiving (an ode to Furman Bisher's AJC Thanksgiving column) often resulting in laughter and tears. Walter is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Smith Hogan, two sons-Rhett Suddath Hogan and wife, Candace Sanshu Hogan, Blake Smith Hogan, and grandsons-Asher Evans Hogan and Cooper Suddath Hogan. Walter's celebration of life will be held August 3, 2024, at Mountain Park UMC, Stone Mountain, GA. Visitation will begin at 12 noon with the service continuing after at 1:15.
