Bobby Joe Marshal, 63, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023 at his parents' home. Kay and Larry O'Neal, Hayter Street, after a long fight against Reiters disease. Bobby had been in Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for 11 days. The doctors at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital made heroic efforts to save Bobby's life. He was sent to hospice at the home of his parents, Larry and Kay O' Neal, who have been married for 46 years. Heart to Heart Hospice set up a hospital bed in our living room and took wonderful care of Bobby. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their care. Sunday, Oct. 1, a large number of family and friends visited him at his bedside. Bobby was born Nov. 16, 1959, in Temple, Texas, to Kay Bostick Marshall and Joe Marshall. Bobby graduated from Richland High School in Waco, Texas in 1977. Bobby in the 1980's served in the U. S. Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Bobby developed Reiters syndrome. It's a rare disease and is always fatal. Bobby was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches, Texas, from 1983 until he passed away. Bobby will be cremated and his ashes will be put in the columbarium at Christ Episcopal Church. Bobby attended Stephen Austin State University in the 1980's. Bobby lived at Independence Manor in Nacogdoches for the past 20 years. Bobby would like to thank the staff and people at Independence Manor for loving and caring for him. Bobby hunted deer most of his life at his grandparents' deer lease, Jim and Tressie Bostick of Marshall, Texas. The past 15 years he hunted with his dear friend Darrell Hall of Appleby, Texas. At age 61, Bobby shot a deer on Hall's lease and had the head and horns mounted. He hung it on the wall in his home at Independence Manor. Bobby enjoyed woodworking at Independence Manor. He made hundreds of birdhouses and gave them to family and friends. Bobby's mother; Kay Bostick O'Neal and Bobby, are descendants of Sion Bostick, who captured Santa Anna at the end of the Battle of San Jacinto. Sion Bostick was in a company with Samuel Hayter, who was also a hero of the battle of San Jacinto. Interestingly Kay and Larry O'Neal live on Hayter Street in Nacogdoches which is named for Samual Hayter. After the capture of Santa Anna, all of the soldiers wanted to kill Santa Anna, but Sam Houston decided to ransom Santa Anna back to the Mexican Government. The ransom money was used to fund the Republic of Texas. Without the ransom money there would not be a Republic of Texas. His mother, Kay, loved Bobby very much, who was the sweetest, kindest and gentlest man you could ever meet. Bobby will be cremated though Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors in Nacogdoches and his ashes will be placed at Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches. Bobby's memorial service will be on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 11:00 a. m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches with the Rev. Gary Hill, a retired priest of the church, conducting the service.

It was here that she met the love of her life, Clark, and created their beautiful life and family. Karen and Clark married February 15, 1986. They were blessed with two daughters; Kaylyn and Madalyn. Karen enjoyed more than anything spending time with her family and her grandchildren. She spent part of her free time outside, whether it be in the flower beds, going to the beach, or chasing sunsets. Most of her time, her and Clark spent following grandkids around to ballgames, rodeos, or where ever that week's schedule took them. Being "lolly" was her favorite title of all. She loved painting and crafting with the grandkids, each visit there were bracelets being made, paintings being created, and crafts being made. In her last months of life, she stayed strong for her family and never showed them any sign that she was growing weary. Up until her last days, she was in true Karen fashion; making sure everything was in its right place and soaking up time with family. She had an eye for detail and lived by the words, "if you're going to do something, better do it right. " No one could ask for a more selfless and loving woman to be in their life. You could not have asked for a better mother, wife, daughter, sister, grandmother, or friend. She would do anything and everything she could to make sure every occasion was perfect and special for everyone. She was loved by many and will be missed by all, but we have peace knowing that Karen is in heaven enjoying all the things she once could do. She fought a tough battle and she is now rejoicing with her Lord upstairs. The love and lessons Karen taught us all will live with us forever. Robert Mathis

Robert Mathis

Age - 82

November 27, 2023

Elizabeth Ann Crozier Mathis MAY 8, 1950 – OCTOBER 14, 2020 Elizabeth Ann Crozier Mathis was born in Houston on May 8, 1950, and died in Nacogdoches on October 14, 2020. Her friends and family knew her as "Ann". She was preceded in death by her parents William Ellyson and Elizabeth Byrd Hill Crozier of Houston. She was survived by her husband Robert Neil Mathis (who is recently deceased November 14, 2023), her son David N Mathis of Nacogdoches, sister (Olivia) Gail Bennett of Houston and niece Carol L Bennett of Houston. Ann was deeply loved and is sorely missed by her family every day. Ann grew up in Houston and graduated from Sam Houston High School. She held two degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University and was a long time programmer analyst in the Computer Center of that institution. She enjoyed interacting with friends across the nation who shared her eclectic devotions to the Beatles, Mario Lanza, The Fugitive, X-Files, and Gunsmoke. She designed and treasured her peaceful home in the woods where deer and other wildlife entertained. She worshiped cats and fervently opposed all forms of cruelty to animals. And she loved to travel! But, as an avid reader, she was never happier than when reading a good book. She was passionate about social justice and the equal and compassionate treatment of all humankind. Ann lived a meaningful life, even though it ended much too soon. Because Ann passed during the height of Covid restrictions, her memorial was delayed. Robert Neil Mathis JULY 9, 1941 – NOVEMBER 13, 2023 Dr. Robert Neil Mathis of Nacogdoches was born in College Station on July 9, 1941, and died in Tyler, Texas on November 14, 2023. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Elizabeth Ann Crozier Mathis, his parents Floyd T Mathis and Florence L Mathis, and brother James L Mathis. He is survived by his son David N Mathis of Nacogdoches, sister-in-law (Olivia) Gail Bennett of Houston, and niece Carol L Bennett of Houston. Robert successfully pursued his career in academia by completing his undergrad at Texas A&M, and later obtaining his Doctorate in History from University of Georgia. His interests were varied and many, but his passion was focused on the Civil War Era in America. He returned home to Texas in the late 1960’s where he joined Stephen F Austin State University (SFASU) as a History Professor. He achieved tenure and held several leadership positions including Faculty Senator (elected in 1978, officer in 1979 and then Chairman 1981-82), as well as the History Department Chairman for many years until stepping down in 2000. He partially retired in 2005, and in 2008 the University designated him as Professor Emeritus. Robert had many friends and colleagues who were treated to his agile, dry wit. He was keenly interested in the world around him and always a voracious reader of all things political or historical, or generally any kind of interesting non-fiction. He avidly collected campaign buttons from across the country, and kept his mind sharp by working through challenging levels of Sudoku puzzles. But he was also thoroughly relatable in his love of college football (especially when the Aggies played) and professional baseball (his favorites being the Dodgers and Astros). He interests even extended to college basketball as he kept up with the Women’s UConn Huskies team. While he attended games in person when time permitted, on the weekends at home you could often find him eating his favorite peanuts and watching the afternoon games. Robert also met his wife Ann at SFASU and they married in 1972 after she graduated with her first degree. They remained in Nacogdoches working for the University and built a life together based on strong foundations of mutual love, caring and respect. They welcomed their son David in 1985 whom they cherished and loved very much, and continued to augment their family with a variety of cats (plus a few dogs). In later years they made time to travel as well as enjoy live entertainment such as concerts and musicals.Show more
