Mrs. Bina Triplett Claybrook Simmons, age 91, of Deep Gap, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023 at Watauga Medical Center. Mrs. Simmons was a member at Mount Ephraim Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Mark and Theresa Claybrook of Deep Gap; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Triplett of Pinehurst, Idaho and Oradell Triplett of Kellogg, Idaho; along with several nieces and nephews. Also her special friend, Mary Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, Spencer and Roxie Cox Triplett; first husband, Robert Elber Claybrook, second husband, Stewart Simmons; five brothers, Verlon, Harvey, Steve, Roma and Carlos Triplett; and one sister, Zella King. Funeral services for Mrs. Simmons will be conducted Thursday morning, September 14, 2023 at 11 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Burl Jones and Rev. Dwayne Jones. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o'clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Christian View Christian Church, 543 Anglin Mill Road, Stoneville, NC 27048. The family respectfully requests no food. Samuel Austin Moretz of Big Hill Road went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 23, 2023 at the age of 81. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served for 20 years and retired as a Master Sergeant. After retiring, he worked for the Blue Ridge Parkway where he worked for 20 more years and finally retired in 2005. He enjoyed collecting pocket watches and knives, and coins. He also enjoyed frequent trips to Harrahs and Pigeon Forge. He especially loved spending quality time with his family. He married the love of his life, Carol in 1967 in Reno, Nevada. They spent 56 wonderful years together and raised four children. Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Jessie Moretz and son-in-law, David Greene. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann Moretz, daughter, Terri Greene of Charlotte, son, Tim (Selena) Moretz and their children, Damon, Derek and Dayna Moretz, son, Tom (Gale) Moretz and their children, Matthew Moretz, and Emily Hicks of Mountain City, TN, daughter, Jennifer (Chad) Bailey of Conover, NC, and his sister, Barbara (John) Moretz. Jimmie Owen died on October 30th, 2023. She was taken to Watauga Hospital where she experienced a painless and quick passing. She had recently turned 95 although you would not have guessed it. Jimmie is best known for being a kindergarten teacher for 30+ years in Boone. She was often stopped while walking around by an adult that had been a previous student. She loved traveling and did a lot of it. It would be hard to count how many countries she visited. She also traveled in the United States with her last trip being with her 2 daughters and son for a train ride to New Orleans for Halloween. She was very active and stayed very busy. She really enjoyed spending time at the senior center and took various classes there. She was an active weaver and knitter. She was still living on her own driving, cooking, gardening and shopping. She loved being outside on her patio, enjoying her flowers, having friends over or taking a nap. Jimmie loved spending time with her grand and great grandchildren. Most were able to visit before she passed. She was an inspiration and a role model to all of us. She is survived by three children, Mike Owen, Judy Davis and Caron Sowers. Nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren and one daughter in law. She was born in San Antonio Texas but grew up in Uvalde, Texas. She married Slim Owen and was an elementary school teacher. In 1962 they moved to Boone, where she was the first kindergarten teacher at the new Harden Park School. She continued her educational training and got her masters from ASU. She has been cremated and has asked to be buried with the ashes of her oldest son Clay, her brother Bud and the father of her children Slim. He was a served in the Italian army during World War II, where his bravery and commitment to his country were evident in his unwavering service. Born July 11, 1970 in Watauga County, he was a son of Gilbert and Gloria Gragg Presnell. Eric was a life member of Advent Christian Church. He was employed at Omega Tee Screen Printing Company in Boone. Eric loved the Dallas Cowboys, golfing with friends and trout fishing. He is survived by his children, Nicholas James Presnell of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Kayn Patrick Greene, Shelby Jean Presnell and Donovan Eric Presnell, all of Banner Elk; former wife and mother of his children, Anita Presnell; his mother, Gloria Gragg Presnell of Boone; brother, Steven Gilbert Presnell and wife, Lorrie, of Boone; sister, Sheri Annette Stout and husband, Jimmy of Trade, Tennessee; nephew, Austin Cole Stout of Trade, Tennessee and niece, Cara Presnell of Boone. Mr. Squire Elzie Weaver, Jr. , age 91, of Lenoir, passed away November l5, 2023 at Autumn Care of Drexel. Born July 14, 1932 in Watauga County, he was a son of Elzie and Grace Church Weaver. Squire grew up in the Aho community and attended school in Blowing Rock. Squire was a POW during his service with the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After his tour in the army, he worked for several years with his brothers William and Roby, building bridges on the Interstate Highway System in Virginia and Maryland. In 1966, Squire moved back home, settling on the family farm and went to work with his father and brothers in home construction. Squire earned his building contractors license in 1976 and with his partner, Johnny Johnson, constructed dozens of homes and commercial developments throughout Watauga County. In l982 he and his son, Charlie, founded S E Weaver Construction Company and continues the family building tradition. After retirement, Squire became a full time 'PAW' to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Toni Weaver Floyd and husband, Frankie, of New Bern; son, Charlie Weaver and wife, Shannon, of Lenoir; granddaughters, Sally Parlier and husband, Jason of Raleigh, Danelle Nunez and husband, Eddie, of Boone, Casey Triplett and husband, Logan, of Knoxville, TN and Allison Brumfield and husband, Michael, of Jacksonville, NC; grandson, Josh Floyd and wife, Anna, of Boone; great grandchildren, Maddie, Tyson, Winny, Rafe, Helen, Lennon, Cameron, Bentley and Judah; and sisters, Doris Weaver Greer and Louise Weaver Davis, both of Boone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Abby Gregory Weaver; longtime partner, Lucy Bradshaw; sisters Joyce and Lois; and brothers, Johnnie, William, Roby and Roy. Sallie Ellis Newell, 66, of Boone NC, passed away at her home on November 11, 2023 surrounded by her daughters, Brianne and Jackie, and loving partner, Tommy. Sallie was born on December 29, 1956 in Advance, NC, to the late William Jean Ellis and Hazel Rose Lackey Ellis. In addition to her parents, Sallie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 31 years, Brian Alan Newell and her only son, Andrew Russell Newell, Drew. Sallie was the youngest of five and truly adored by her parents and older siblings. She graduated from Davie High School in 1975 where she served as the Chief Cheerleader. Sallie is a 1979 graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in business. Through the years, Sallie worked for Appalachian State as a computer programmer and held numerous positions within Watauga County Schools. Sallie worked 27 years for the state of North Carolina and before retiring, she worked as an NC Wise trainer for NCDPI. After marrying in 1980, Sallie and Brian settled in Boone and would go on to raise three wonderful children. As a mother, Sallie stopped at nothing to ensure her kids were loved and supported at home, school, and within the community. She attended countless sporting events, recitals, and plays. While it will never be enough time, Sallie was able to pour out that same love on her five grandchildren. Sallie had a genuine love for people and she expressed that as an active member of Boone United Methodist Church for many years. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the Church's Annual Fall Bazaar among other things. Sallie was very invested in her community. She served on the Boone Service League and aided in local elections for many years. She was an avid tennis player and a member at Deer Valley, and she truly loved her tennis friends and community. As any of her close friends would tell you, Sallie loved to paint, loved to dance and enjoyed listening to good music. Sallie modeled a lifestyle of generosity with her resources, and was always ready to share as the opportunity arose. She traveled to a host of beautiful places around the world and was always up for a social outing with her dear friends and family. The beach was her favorite place to visit, and it was there that she was able to spend plenty of time during the last years of her life. Sallie is survived by two daughters, Brianne Rose Thurman (Joshua) of Fleetwood, NC and Jacqueline "Jackie" Newell Garner (David) of Boone, NC; five grandchildren, Claire Isabella Thurman, Abigail Rose Thurman, Sofia Drew Thurman, Finley Jack Garner and Drew Francis Garner; two brothers, Robert Ellis (Vauda) of Mocksville, William Ellis (Vickie) of Mocksville; two sisters Sharon Burger of Lafayette Hill, PA, and Susan Price of Hillsborough, NC. Sallie is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and special friends. She is also survived by her loving partner, Tommy Leake of Rockingham, NC. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, November 16, at 11 am at Boone United Methodist Church, with a brief visitation preceding at 10 am.
