Billie Susan Riddell, aged 74, of Asheville, NC, passed away September 4, 2023. Billie was born on January 18, 1949, to the late William T. Bame and Aline Pons Bame. In addition to her parents, Billie was preceded in death by her son, Chad Riddell. She was a loving mother, and was always proud of all of Chad's accomplishments. Billie graduated from Asheville Catholic High School. She worked at Southern Bell but spent the majority of her life in retail Sales. She was an animal lover her whole life and always owned a dog. In her later years Pooh, and then Sammy, and then Bellamy were her cherished companions. Billie loved going antiquing and thrift store shopping with her cousin, Carolyn Swan. She had a great eye for quality and over the years accumulated some beautiful art and special pieces. Billie will be remembered by her old friends, including Barbara Carter, for their high school antics, sharing of secrets, belly laughs and love and support through difficult times over the past 60 years. Those left to cherish her memory are her cousin, Carolyn Swan; and special friends, Betty Whitson, Diane Sanders, and Steve and Carrie Coward and their children. They'll remember her stubbornness, her sense of humor, her high fashion, and the love and interest she took in those she cared for. A small private service will be held at a later date. Jerry Lee Hanson, born on October 8, 1949, in Virginia, peacefully passed away on December 8, 2023, in Asheville. Jerry's life can be described as a journey of dedication and service, from his accomplished career to his military service and cherished hobbies. Jerry dedicated an impressive 39 years of his life working as a Field Service Technician at Air Liquide before retiring in 2012. Throughout his career, he exhibited unwavering commitment and expertise in his field. Jerry's colleagues admired his professionalism, problem-solving abilities, and meticulous attention to detail. His work ethic was unmatched, and his contributions left an indelible mark on the company. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jerry honorably served in the US Army, stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas during the Vietnam War Era. Jerry's military service exemplified his dedication to the principles of liberty and justice. Outside of work and military service, Jerry possessed an insatiable curiosity and an affinity for craftsmanship. Woodworking was one of his passions; he had a natural talent for transforming blocks of wood into beautiful creations. Jerry derived great pleasure from tinkering with electronics, fascinated by their inner workings. Additionally, Jerry had a profound understanding of electricity—an aptitude that he applied whenever the opportunity arose. Jerry's family was deeply important to him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his loving parents John and Hazel Duncan Hanson; he is also preceded in death by his siblings, Shirley Bobbitt, Dale Hanson and Karl Hanson. Jerry will be remembered and forever missed by his surviving family members, including his ex-wife, children, siblings, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. His enduring love, care, and guidance touched the lives of all those who were fortunate enough to know him. Jerry's legacy as a devoted father, sibling, and grandparent will continue to resonate in the hearts of his loved ones for generations to come. Above all else, he valued family and leaves behind a cherished legacy filled with memories that will be forever treasured. A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held from 4:00 p. m. until 6:00 p. m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at the Wells Events and Reception Center. Carlton Bradley Earnhardt, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2023, at the age of 55. He was the son of the late Keith Lancaster Earnhardt and Dr. James F. Earnhardt. He was born at the Camp Zama Army Hospital near Tokyo, Japan, where his father was stationed at the time. Brad is survived by his father, Dr. James F. Earnhardt of Gerton, NC; his two brothers: James F. Earnhardt, Jr. , of Raleigh, NC, and Michael K. Earnhardt of La Crescenta, CA; his sister-in-law, Angela Curry Earnhardt, of La Crescenta; his two nephews: Warwick M. Earnhardt, of Durham, NC, and Silas C. Earnhardt, of La Crescenta; and two nieces: Scarlett S. Earnhardt, of New York, NY, and Ada R. Earnhardt, of La Crescenta. He is also survived by his former wife and best friend, Francis Xenakis Earnhardt, of Asheville. Brad grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, where he completed high school and undergraduate studies at the School of Music at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Upon graduating, he attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of Arizona. He eventually settled in Asheville where he performed and taught classical guitar. He was a founding member of the Asheville Classical Guitar Society and a regular performer at the Biltmore Estate. He continued to teach and inspire students young and old, many of whom he referred to the North Carolina School of the Arts and other national programs. Brad maintained many friendships with former students from across the country. He not only had a passion for classical guitar, but for the arts in general. Brad was also fiercely proud of not owning a television and was a lifelong lover of cats, including his beloved six-toed Mia. He loved to cook and was particularly fond of Asian cuisine. Brad was also passionate about politics, always choosing the side of compassion, equality, tolerance, and social justice. In the spring of this year, Brad was diagnosed with cancer and he eventually failed to respond to treatment. There is great appreciation by his family for the significant time and effort of his doctors, nurses, other care providers and his many friends. Brad was a kind and gentle soul who was loved by many and will be sorely missed. A private memorial will be held by immediate family. A public celebration of his life will take place in Asheville during the week of Brad's birthday in mid-January. Details will be announced. Asheville - Betty Meadows, 98, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the Swannanoa Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Asheville. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a graduate of Mars Hill College. Mrs. Meadows retired from the N. C. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Center and was a longtime member of Emma United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and making great memories together. She will be greatly missed. Mrs. Meadows was a daughter of the late Henry Shuford and Mary Patton Shuford, and the wife of the late John Troy Meadows. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Kate Seaward and Laura Shuford; and by her twin brother, Lewis Shuford. Surviving are her son, John L. Meadows; and daughter, Mary Emmagene Mangum and husband Reid. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, December 12, 2023, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Pastor Mary Cash officiating. Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery in Swannanoa. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. A special thanks to all the staff and caregivers at the Swannanoa Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center and Four Seasons Hospice for their love and support given to our family.
