Butte, MT

Beverly "Joyce" Kilmer went home to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father Sept. 27th 2023. Which coincidently is the same month her brother past away just 4 short years ago. They both loved to tell the story how Joyce was the Christmas present for which her 10 year old bother asked. Joyce was born December 4, 1946 in Butte MT to Elsworth (Al) and Dorothy Kilmer. She attended Butte schools Graduating from Butte High School. She graduated from Rocky Mountain college with a degree in education. Joyce was very musically inclined and played many instruments including the piano, guitar and Auto Harp, clarinet, oboe but her love was always the piano. She played and sang at all family gatherings as well as churches she attended. Many could always count on receiving a birthday call from Joyce with the piano playing and her singing the Happy Birthday song on their special day. Not long after college Joyce found herself in what would become her new home state of California. Teaching was her passion, she loved her students and helping them grow. Yet still, while her parents were alive Joyce would travel back to Montana every summer and Christmas to spend time with her family. She always made it clear that she lived in California but Montana would always be her home. Family was always very important to Joyce and her love for each of them could always be felt. When her brother passed away, I believe, a little bit of Joyce went with him. California brought Joyce a career, many friends that she loved deeply, a church family, a deep loving relationship with her pastor Dr. Myrian Monnet, Myrian's friendship was very important to Joyce and she treasured this friendship which really helped her relationship with Jesus grow. Her life outside Montana brought Joyce much happiness and joy but most importantly it was California that would bring Joyce the rock and love of her life Vickie Robertson. The two of them made a perfect pair. Vickie balanced Joyce out and they enjoyed a very happy life together through their working years into retirement and right up to the end of Joyce's time here on earth as Vickie was right beside her taking care of her and loving her. Together they built a life filled with friends, family, laughter, love and adventure. At their home they kept and cared for their horses, dogs, cats and lately even the chickens. They traveled, camped, and oh yeah, spent a day or two or a thousand at Disney Land. May 23rd of this year marked 43 years they were together. I am sure there will be a hole felt in Vickie's life that her family and friends will try hard to patch. Vickie's reward will only be found in heaven as there is no earthly gift powerful enough to express the gratitude of her being in all our lives. Especially Joyce'sJoyce was preceded in death by her Father Elsworth (Al), Mother Dorothy and her brother Jimm. She is survived by her partner Vickie Robertson, Nephews Mitchel (Barb) Kilmer, Jimm (Peggy) Kilmer Bob (Karen) Kilmer and Niece Heather Welsch, along with many great nieces, nephews and cousins. Services are being held in California and a small graveside service will be held in Butte at time of internment next year. An announcement will follow. Please make any donation or memorial to the American Cancer Society To send a flower arrangement or to plant trees in memory of Beverly "Joyce" Kilmer, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.

Jon Williamson

Jon Williamson

Age - 72

December 9, 2023

"Jon Skaar Williamson passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at St. James Hospital in Butte, Montana of natural causes. Jon was 72 years old. Jon Williamson was born on November 17, 1950, in Bozeman, Montana to Shirley and Florence Williamson. Jon grew up in a log house in Bridger Canyon with his two older brothers, Mike and Paul. In high school, Jon was a standout athlete, setting school records at Bozeman High School in Track and Field. Later, Jon was recruited by several university ski teams and competed in the Nordic Combined and in Track and Field at the University of Montana. In the fall of 1970, while home in Bozeman for the weekend, Jon attended a party where he met a beautiful woman, Linda Young. Jon was smitten and the next semester he transferred to Montana State University (MSU) to be closer to Linda. While at MSU, Jon continued his athletic career, again setting more school Track and Field records. Jon married the love of his life, Linda, on July 22, 1972. This was the start of a remarkable 51-year marriage forged in love, faith, friendship, and partnership. Together, Jon and Linda had four beautiful children: Maria, Mike, Kevin, and Jeff. Jon loved his family deeply. Jon cheered his children on at every sports event, performance, and ceremony. He freely offered faith, wisdom, and unconditional love to his children throughout their childhood and into adulthood, which they relied on as they made lives and families of their own. In 1985, Jon and his family were in a tragic car crash, which left him paralyzed. Despite his disability, Jon lived a full life never letting his disability dictate his life. Jon emanated gratitude and humility which was admired and loved by all who knew him. He was an exceptional listener with an ability to converse and connect with everyone he met. Jon was a man of great faith; he was a leader at Gold Hill Lutheran Church and an involved member of Stephen Ministry for decades. After his retirement from Talon Energy in 2015, Jon volunteered as a tutor at an elementary school. The teachers assigned him their most challenging students because they knew his steady patience and attention could get through to them. But Jon was not always calm and steady. The lucky few got to witness Jon's temper when his beloved MSU Bobcats were not playing well or when the refs made a poor call. Watching the Brawl of the Wild with Jon was especially fiery. Jon was never one to gloat after a win. In the good years, after the Cats would come out victorious, Jon would quietly celebrate the win by enjoying a bowl of chili with his family--hardly a celebratory whoop or holler to be heard. Throughout his life, Jon was always up for an adventure. There are countless stories of getting Jon to a gathering with friends and family in the most precarious way. After the accident, Jon continued to ski and took on the challenge of learning a sit-ski head on (sometimes literally) with Eagle Mount and his sons Mike and Jeff at Bridger Bowl. Jon also continued to fish on Canyon Ferry Lake with his father-in-law, children, and grandchildren. One of Jon's last adventures was last summer when the family nearly capsized a pontoon boat on Hauser Lake while celebrating Jon and Linda's 50th wedding anniversary. After the car accident in 1985, Jon and Linda were told that he may not make it to age 60. Jon and Linda were determined that that would not be their fate. Jon lived 38 vibrant years with his disability. Those years would not have been possible without the exceptional care he received by his personal healthcare aides. The Williamson Family is forever grateful for the care and friendship provided by Bonnie Bugni, Raquel Correa-Greer, Tiffany McGraw, Megan Savage, Nachole Sestrich, Lettie Smith, Marcia Vollien, Randy Walund, and many, many others. Jon is preceded in death by his father Shirley, mother Florence, and son Kevin. Jon is survived by his wife of 51 years Linda; daughter Maria Biastoch (Kevin), and sons Mike (Laura) and Jeff Williamson; grandchildren Ben (Meaghanne Hendrickson) and Abby Biastoch, and Elin Williamson; brothers Mike (Judy) and Paul (Jennifer) Williamson. A service for Jon will be held at Gold Hill Lutheran Church (934 Placer St, Butte, Montana) on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 11:00 am. The family will hold a private burial at Mountain View Cemetery in spring 2024 where Jon will be laid to rest with his son, Kevin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either Gold Hill Lutheran Church or to an organization of the donor's choice in Jon's memory. "Show more

Karen Butler

Karen Butler

Age - 83

December 9, 2023

"Karen Butler, also known as Karen Eleanor Hanna, Karen Padbury and Karen Colvin, died on November 16, 2023, unexpectedly from complications after surgery. She was born on August 5, 1940, in Butte Montana, the town where her family had moved earlier so that her father, Charles Wray Hanna, could have a good job working in the copper mines. Her mother, Eleanor Faddis, thought that Butte was a pretty rough place, compared to the small towns she came from in Utah, so her admonition to Karen was always, "Don't act like a Butte kid. " The answer back was, "But I am a Butte kid. " unlike her brother Charles Wray Jr and sister Joyce, who were both born in Utah. The family lived on Colorado Street for a while then moved to "the flat" at 2228 Harrison Avenue, across the street from the Food Bank Grocery and the Dairy Queen. This was the family home until 1965. It was while living here and exploring the neighborhood at age three that Karen was hit by a car on Florence Avenue. She was hospitalized then and for many years, for months at a time, for muscle repair surgery and therapy. She grew up in casts and braces and these injuries influenced her choices and opportunities all her life while also forming her to be a very strong and independent person. She attended Emerson Grade School and these schoolmates remained her lifelong friends. She graduated from Butte High, Class of '58, and went on to Brigham Young University. She began her work career at 16 working in the dental office on Park Street of Dr. J Myles White DDS. After her marriage to Charles Thomas Padbury from Helena, she quit college and worked at dental offices in Provo Utah and Portland Oregon, where Chuck graduated from BYU and from the University of Oregon Dental School. Living in Portland, in 1963 they adopted a wonderful nine-day old baby boy they named Craig Earl and two years later were delighted when Burke Charles arrived in the usual, but exciting manner. The blond little girl to complete their family was adopted in 1969 and named Laurel. Karen enjoyed her family and was active in all their activities, including Chuck's office, Craig's sports, Burke's scouting, Laurel's dance. As a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints she was committed to serving others in various callings in the Ward and Stake Relief Society, Primary, Youth and Seminary organizations. She enjoyed her designation as "token Mormon friend" by her Butte kid friends. After she and Chuck divorced, she was reunited with her high school sweetheart Donald Edward Butler. They were married and made a home on Pintlar Lane in Butte, where Don was a Police Officer. She again worked in a dental office and then enjoyed 20 years as an office manager at Rocky Mountain Clinic. They loved Butte and made forever friends. After Don died in 1999, Karen retired and continued on with a busy life of voluntarism, at Butte Archives, RSVP and church, plus an active social life of exercise classes, Red Hat Society, golf, eating out and loving her little dog, Riley. During that time, she was happily married for 5 years to an old and dear friend, Jack Colvin. They traveled and enjoyed life together until his death in 2009. Karen enjoyed visiting with her family. She was able to remain in the community of Butte with her friends, staying in the home she loved with the help of her son Burke, who moved back to Butte to live with her. Karen was known for entertaining, bringing friends and family together, through her formal dinners and casual gatherings in her backyard. She delighted in her green yard and colorful flower gardens that had increased in size and varieties the last couple of summers. Karen could be found curled up on the couch or in a chair crocheting one of her famous afghans. Karen has a kind and generous heart and continues to be loved by many. She is survived by her devoted sons Craig (Julie) Padbury, Burke Padbury, and daughter Laurel Mizell. Grandchildren: Kyla Padbury (Neph Smith), Tanner Padbury, Shannon (Jess) Hansen, and Carson (Bayley) Padbury. Arianna Padbury, Shaelin Padbury, and Isen Padbury. Cassie (Jacob) Crandell, Brenton (Lindsay) Mizell, Savannah (Tanner) Smith, and Brevin Mizell. Also, part of Karen's family are Don's children, Bill, Don, Randy and Dan Butler, Kathy Irving and Cindy Thomas and their spouses and children. The Butler family always treated Karen with love and respect; she loved and appreciated them. Sister Joyce (Kent) Stoddard, Sister-in-law Ardith Hanna and many nieces and nephews. Karen's goal was to teach the gospel of Christ every day, using words if necessary. We thank all who have been so kind. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services for Karen will be conducted Saturday afternoon, December 2nd at 2o'clock in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. "Show more

Melvyn Rowling

Melvyn Rowling

Age - 83

December 9, 2023

"Melvyn D. Rowling passed away on November 19th, 2023. He was born on February 16, 1940 in Butte, MT to Douglas Rowling and Mildred Luoma Rowling. He often spoke in detail (with a grin on his face) about his youth and misadventures in 1940's and 1950's Butte. He loved telling about delivering papers through the red light district and his misdeeds with explosives. Melvyn spent much of his childhood at the family ranch in Roberts, MT. At 18, he joined the Air Force where he learned drafting, illustration and surveying and claimed to see things that he could never tell us about while working in the White Sands missile range. He also served in Hawaii and Nellis Air Force base. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force Melvyn worked for the Anaconda Company as a land surveyor for many years in both Butte and Tucson. After the closure of the Anaconda Company he worked at Alpha Engineers Montana until he started his own company Rowling's Technical Services. Melvyn was passionate about mining and geology. He spent most of his free time in pursuit of striking it rich with his mining claims. He also served as vice-president and president for the Citizens Technical Environmental Committee for the Upper Clark Fork Drainage in the early 90's Melvyn had three children with his first wife - Cindy, Alan and Barbara. He then met the love of his life Shirley Cuchine Rowling and together they had his youngest son Douglas. He loved fly-fishing, hunting, riding Honda 90's, his pet birds and pet pisser dogs. He and his family had many great adventures in his yellow CJ5 Jeep. Most of all, he loved his family and was always happiest when everyone was together and he had someone to tease. His younger brother, children, grand-children, nieces and nephews all have so many stories they could tell including snipe hunting, furnace monsters, firefly hunting, and many others as well as his many silly phrases and jokes. Melvyn was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest son Alan, his sister Darlene, his brothers-in-law Jim, Bud, Dave and Jerry and his sister-in-law Denise. We would like to thank his caregivers for all of their help and support over the last several years from the VA, Encompass and Visiting Angels along with Mel and Shirley's special friend Anna. Cremation has taken place. A remembrance gathering will be held next year. See you 'round like a toilet seat. Every once in a while. "Show more

John Wolcott

John Wolcott

Age - 73

December 9, 2023

"John "Jack" Floyd Wolcott was the 1st born of Gloria Pike and Floyd W. Wolcott on 8/18/1950 in Butte. He grew up in Walkerville and attended Blaine School and later Butte High School. Jack embodied the Butte spirit and enjoyed his tight knit group of childhood friends. After high school, Jack ran trains from Butte to the Smelter until he joined the Navy in 1971. He became a SeaBee and was very proud of his time in the service. While in the Navy he married Violet West and had three children; his 2 daughters were born while stationed in California and his son was born in Butte. After returning to Montana, he owned the Windsor Bar in Boulder for a short time and laid carpets for years. In 2000, he met the love of his life in his precious Susie. Susie put him into early retirement after all the flooring destroyed his knees. They married 12/21/2009, the longest night of the year. Jack always had a delightfully bad pun on hand to share with anyone who would listen. He was quite the dedicated conflated wordsmith and would delight in getting a groan out of you. He was always pulling little pranks on the family. With the grand kids he would perform "magic" like placing a towel over an item and grab it when you would lift the towel and say "Tada!" as if it was the most magical thing you ever saw. Jack passed in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his favorite uncles, Harold, Jack, and Leon and is survived by his wife Susan, his kids Lori Amoroso, Tammy Wolcott, Scott Wolcott, Reece (Savannah) Gendreau, Tanna (Erik) Brown, Grandkids Cheyenne Holbrook-Wolcott, Jacqulynne Leggitt, Shalyssa (Casey) Schilling, Isaiah Wolcott, Dean Shannon, Derrick Fournier, Giselle Gendreau, Aspen Brown, and numerous Great Grand Kids. Jack's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Fort Harrison Veterans Cemetery in Helena on Thursday at 12 noon. A special thank you to Honeybee Hospice for their outstanding and compassionate care, the doctors and staff at St. James for their quick and professional treatment, and all the friends and family that provided support through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers please make a charitable donation in his name to the charity of your choice, a veterans' organization, or an animal shelter. "Show more

Ryan O'Leary

Ryan O'Leary

Age - 45

December 1, 2023

ObituaryIn the late hours on November 14, 2023, Ryan O'Leary took his own life after suffering years of severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of a 20-year Army career that multiple deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. His death represents a failure of a system that was supposed to care for and support him following his years of dedicated service to this country, and, despite their best efforts, a failure of his friends, family, and loved ones to convince him that he needed serious help. His death is also a reminder that there are thousands of Veterans who suffer every day and who need your help, and that we need to ensure resources are available for those suffering from mental health issues. Ryan Thomas O'Leary was born December 1, 1977, in Havre, Montana, to Randy and Pamela Salazar O'Leary while they attended Northern Montana College, and moved back home to Butte while he was a newborn. A firecracker from birth, he was a true Butte boy who was always ready to settle disputes in true Butte fashion: with his fists in the parking lot. During his youth he was a national BMX champion and could be found riding his bike with his brothers and friends all over "the Flats" and on the dirt trails near Father Sheehan Park on his way to or from Little League at Mile High. An early adopter of the rattail, some say he also introduced the word "rad" to the local lexicon before it went viral in the '80s. He was a Whittier elementary school standing long jump legend under the tutelage of Principal George Parrett, who also introduced Ryan to the paddle on more than one occasion. He was an avid skier and could easily be spotted at Discovery or Big Sky in his neon jackets, sending it epically on whatever trail he would point his skis straight down, always while wearing his Bret "The Hitman" Hart-style wraparound shades that were considered legal tender in many parts of the Rockies. He attended both Butte Central and Butte High Schools, and graduated from Butte High in 1996. His fighting spirit led him to enlist in the Army that same year, which led to a 20-plus year career serving his country around the globe, including nearly five years of his life in combat zones. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one campaign star, and the Iraq Campaign Medal with five campaign stars. Ryan's service to his country was truly indicative of his service above self. Despite the last few years of his obvious suffering, when he displayed classic signs of severe PTSD that were especially acute these past few months and weeks, deep down inside (and also in true Butte fashion) Ryan was a fighter not only for his country, but for his family and friends as well. He opened his home to strangers; cared for fellow Veterans, friends, and family members; always lent a helping hand; and truly would give the shirt off of his back to anyone in need. Though there is some solace knowing that he no longer suffers, he truly will be missed and our lives are a little less full without him. Ryan was preceded in death by his grandfathers Maximillian Salazar II (Navy Veteran) and Richard "Dick" O'Leary, Sr. (Air Force Veteran); his uncles and aunt Steve Salazar (Air Force Veteran), Timothy Salazar, Mark Salazar (Army Veteran), Rick Michaelis, Faye Owens Salazar (Army Veteran), and Daniel Fawcett; and his cousins Mikey Salazar, Bob Foster, baby Will Hollow, Markie Salazar (Army Veteran), Casey Boyle, and Koby Hawke. He is survived by his mother and father Randy and Pamela Salazar O'Leary; brothers Eric (Army Veteran) and Sean; nephew Gavin O'Leary; grandmothers Virginia Salazar and Patricia O'Leary; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins, including his cousin Chad O'Leary, a fellow retired Army Veteran and one of his closest friends and confidants. Services will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Duggan Dolan Mortuary. Reception to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall. In lieu of flowers or any other gifts to the family, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project, Disabled American Veterans, or any other Veterans service organization helping Veterans in need. Please also reach out to anyone you know who may be suffering from mental health issues, whether a Veteran or not, and offer a helping hand and show them that you care, like Ryan would. For those of us whom Ryan left behind, please forgive him, and we should pray that he forgives us as well. Friends may call on Saturday after 10:00 am in the Duggan Dolan Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Services will be celebrated at 11:00 am. To send a flower arrangement or to plant trees in memory of Ryan Thomas O'Leary, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.Show more
