Abilene, Texas- Betty Langston Zimmerman passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023. Funeral: 12:00 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, in the Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 11:15 a. m. Tuesday, prior to the service, in the Mount Olivet Chapel. Betty Langston Zimmerman was born February 7, 1925 to the late Henry and Myrtle Langston in Chilicothe, Texas. She retired from Texas Employment Commission after 30 years of service after which she studied at Tarrant County Jr. College and UTA at Arlington, receiving a degree in Music at age 69. She taught private music lessons for many years and a was church pianist at different churches for 60 years. She also taught different ages in Sunday School. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Zimmerman; parents; and sister, Jean Allen. Survivors: Stepson, Michael Zimmerman and wife, Janice; step-daughter, Sherry Waits; granddaughters, Linsey Zimmerman and husband, Dustin, Amy Donoho and husband, Alex; brother, Milton Langston and wife, Joann; loved nieces, and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Cary Lee Roberts, a beloved son, brother, uncle, accomplished professional, and community leader, passed away December 3, 2023, in Austin at the age of 55. A visitation will be 1 – 2 p. m. Sunday, December 10, 2023, in Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene. Following visitation, a memorial service will begin at 2 p. m. also at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Born April 14, 1968, in Abilene, Texas, Cary was the cherished son of Linda and Garner Roberts. Cary graduated from Abilene Christian High School in 1986 and continued his education at Abilene Christian University, setting the stage for a life marked by intellectual curiosity and a commitment to excellence. A visionary and community builder, Cary co-founded Texas Writers Month, an annual event that celebrated and supported the literary talents of Texas writers through book signings, readings, and statewide events. This initiative, which ran from 1994 to the early 2000s, stands as a testament to Cary's passion for fostering artistic expression and cultural enrichment. Cary's commitment to service was exemplified through his achievements as an Eagle Scout and his role as National Vice-Chief of the Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts of America. In 1988 he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award, the highest recognition for exceptional volunteerism within the Order. With about thirty years of experience in communications, digital strategy, public affairs, and state government relations, Cary was a seasoned professional. His illustrious career included partnership in Casteel & Roberts and service as media relations officer for the Texas Association of Counties, where he managed diverse policy issues in Texas and southeastern states. Cary's expertise extended to his role as the Executive Director of the Greater Austin Crime Commission for an impressive 26 years. Most recently he served as the Principal of Vigil, a consulting and government relations firm based in Austin. Cary's impact on the political landscape was significant, having managed numerous political campaigns at the local and state levels, and he held key positions in organizations such as the Texas Civil Justice League, where he directed the league’s Judicial Education Alliance in the early 1990s. An award-winning writer and multimedia producer, Cary returned to the Texas Civil Justice League as Communications Director in 2000, leaving an indelible mark on the organization. His dedication to justice and effective communication also was reflected in an earlier role as Director of Legislative Information Services at Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, L. L. P. Cary Lee Roberts will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and advocacy for civil justice, law enforcement and first responders, but also for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his contributions to the community will endure in the hearts of many. He is preceded in death by his mother, Linda, and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Cary is survived by his loving father, Garner Roberts of Abilene; brothers, Koy Roberts and his fiancé Sarah of Garland, Texas, and Aaron Roberts and his wife Amy of Corpus Christi, Texas; one nephew, Kash Roberts; four nieces, Reese Roberts, Hanna Roberts, Ella Roberts, and Clara Roberts; and countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. Patsy Herring Thompson was born in Noodle, Texas in Jones County on November 11, 1939. She graduated from Merkel high School in 1958. She graduated from LVN School, Stamford Sanatorium Hospital, in 1961. She loved nursing and worked for many years and in many states. She retired from Hendrick Medical Center after 25 years. She married Jason (Duke) Thompson in 1961, he was serving in the U. S. Air Force. While stationed in Germany 1962-1966, they enjoyed traveling in their V. W. Bug and camping. They toured Germany, Switzerland, Holland, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Denmark, and Sweden. They especially enjoyed touring castles along the Rhine and Mosel Rivers. Her hobbies included quilting, table games with family, she loved spending time with her husband and son. Patsy and her husband shared a love for dogs, two were by her side to the end. She enjoyed Southern Gospel music and attended concerts, she shared this love with her brother Jimmy. She loved her church and was a dedicated Sunday school teacher of children for years—she wanted them to know Jesus!! She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 10. Patsy is preceded in death by her parents, Louise and Bill Herring, Sisters: Betty McBay, Erma Lewallen, Bessie Fortune, Rutha Miller and Brothers: E. W. Herring and Jimmy Herring. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jason (Duke); one son Jeffrie Alan Thompson (the JOY of her life); a sister-in-law Betty Herring; one brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Marilyn Herring; numerous nieces and nephews and countless children who considered her a Grandma like Pepper Grace and Hank who live across the street from her. She leaves a multitude of friends like family to her, some thru her an 84th Birthday Party this November 11th! Patsy went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 2, 2023. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 10 and now she is with Him. The Celebration of her Life will be Thursday December 7 at Elmwood Funeral Home in Abilene, visitation 10am and services 11am. Martin Ray Gohlke, 66, was wrapped in the arms of Jesus on December 1, 2023 in Abilene, TX with his family at his bedside following a short battle with dementia. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Hamil Family Funeral home in Abilene. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10:00 am at Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland, TX. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger, TX. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home. Martin was born on August 14, 1957 in Galveston, TX to Luther Ray Gohlke and Patricia Ann (Broyles) Gohlke. Martin was the oldest of five children and the only son. At an early age, Martin and his family moved to Ranger, TX where his father was the county doctor and mother was a homemaker. Martin grew up loving to hunt, fish, and play sports. As everyone knows, Martin was a tall individual, a "gentle giant"! Martin was recruited by Abilene Christian University to play basketball. While in college, Martin met the love of his life, Carla Willis. They married in May of 1978. Together, Martin and Carla had three sons, Chad (41), Seth (38), and Cody (36). Martin spent the majority of his adult life working at his lumber yard in Ranger. He then worked for Sysco Foods in Abilene as a sales rep. Once all three boys graduated high school, Martin and Carla moved back to Ranger to be close to his dad and took over the cattle ranch where he loved spending time and taking his grandkids out to see the cows. In 2018, Martin was voted in as Eastland County Commissioner for Precinct 2. Martin had a wonderful love for Christ and served as a Deacon or Elder in all four of the churches he was a member of. To Martin, his wife and children (and cows) were everything. Martin coached all of his children’s sports teams growing up and was always there to root them on at their high school and college games. Martin’s life was cut too short with a diagnosis of Frontal Lobe Dementia in 2020. The last three years of Martin’s life were met with all of the challenges of dementia which ultimately led to his passing. Martin is preceded in death by his father and mother. Martin is survived by wife Carla; son Chad and wife Kasey, son Seth and wife Christy, and son Cody and wife Rachel; sisters Carrie Teaff and husband Steve, Greta Stephens and husband Greg, Amy Gohlke, and Lori Edgar and husband Kenny; grandchildren Brailey, Sadie, Ella, Andi, Addie, Cooper, Grayson, Remie, Joseph, Maudie, and Chapel Martin; as well as two aunts, an uncle, and many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Pallbearers will be Chad Gohlke, Seth Gohlke, Cody Gohlke, Steve Teaff, Greg Stephens, Kenny Edgar, Rip Willis, Kelly Willis, and Joe Scott; Junior pallbearers will be Cooper Gohlke, Grayson Gohlke, Joseph Gohlke, and Chapel Gohlke; Honorary pallbearer will be Roy Wade Willis. Mary Sue Burkett, 84 of Abilene, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 2, 2023 after a brief stay in the Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born in Hamlin, Texas on December 17, 1938 to Lloyd and Dru Bigham Warnell. Mary was a woman who was all about family. She was a devout wife, a good mother, and an even better grandmother and great-grandmother. In their younger years Mary and her husband Phil would travel around the world to visit their son Brad when he was in the military. When not at home with her family, she could be seen at her children's and grandchildren's sporting events. She was an avid Abilene Eagle's football fan, but had to trade her precious black and gold in for red and blue and route Jim Ned when her great-grandchildren started playing sports. When it was not sports season her and Phil traveled the country with the Good Sam's RV club. The memories made over the years with her family will live on in their memories for years to come and put a smile on their faces in hard times. Mary is survived by her children Vicki Johnson and husband Wayne of Quinlan, Brad Burkett and wife Tammy of Midland, and Blake Burkett and wife Julie of Hoisington, Kansas, as well as by her grandchildren Megan Walker, Brady Burkett, Lauren Burkett, Eric McKissack and wife Kami, Chad Johnson and wife Lynn, Justus Burkett, and Nicholas Johnson, and by great-grandchildren Breydon Walker, Rylee Wright, Jett Walker, Jackson Walker, Kody McKissack, Kyleigh McKissack, Kole Johnson and wife Christina, Trystinn Johnson and fiance Caleb Williams, and Bryce Burkett. She is also survived by a special daughter in love Suzan Burkett. She was preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Dru Warnell, by her husband of 64 years Phil Burkett, her brother Jerry Warnell. David Charles Bryan, age 79, passed away with family by his side on Friday afternoon, November 17, 2023. A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 10:30 a. m. in the chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St, Abilene, TX. The service will be officiated by his nephew, Ross Strader, pastor of Bethel Bible Church South in Tyler, TX. David was born on December 18, 1943 to Edwin and Mary Bryan. He was the third born in a family of six children. David accepted the Lord as his Savior at an early age and was baptized at the Victory Bible Center as a young boy. One of the greatest influences on his life was his grandmother, Lucy Peters, who lived with the family until her death. She loved David and talked to him daily about the Lord. David attended the Bob Jones Academy located on the campus of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. After graduating from the academy he enrolled in Bob Jones University. Two years later, in 1964, David joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Germany where he met the love of his life, Margit Poulsen, and her baby girl, Ninna Marie, of Copenhagen, Denmark. David and Margit were married in Copenhagen and in 1968, when his duty with the Air Force was completed, moved back to the United States settling in Long Island, New York. They eventually moved back to Abilene and David went into business with his mother, owner of Mary Bryan Draperies. He added the carpet business to the company. Over the years, David worked for various companies selling commercial carpet to hospitals, airports, and office buildings. He and Margit lived in Denver, CO, Nashville, TN, and Houston, TX. After Margit passed away in 2007, David moved back to Abilene. His last employment was with his dear friend Bob Bailey who owned B & L Carpets. David loved to fly fish and hunt. One of his favorite hobbies was shooting at the gun range. He loved music and politics and traveling the western United States. David is predeceased by his wife, Margit Alice Poulsen Bryan; his parents, Mary and Edwin Bryan; and his brother, Fred Bryan. David is survived by his daughter Ninna Hogan of Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Mary Sullivan (Scotty) and Martha Rau, and brother John Bryan, all of Abilene; and older brother Jerry Bryan (Val) of Arlington. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. David was generous, happy, and always ready for an adventure, he will be missed.Show more

He was born January 28, 1938, in Sweetwater, Texas. He married Jessie (Rodriguez) Ortega on October 20, 1960, in Sweetwater. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He lived in Sweetwater his whole life. Survivors include his daughter Christy Little and husband Lance of Sweetwater; three sons, Henry Ortega Jr. and wife Deanna of Sweetwater, Tony Ortega of Los Angeles, and Danny Ortega and wife Heather of Dallas; a sister Alicia Leal of Poteet; two grandsons, Spencer Little of Sweetwater and Tres Ortega of Sweetwater; and one granddaughter, Savannah Little of Sweetwater.
