Betty Geraldine Breeden Wiseman passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville. She was born on March 14, 1934, in Dayton, to the late Herring Thomas and Virginia Ann Almarode Breeden. Betty dedicated four decades of her life as a psychological aide at Western State Hospital where she touched the lives of many patients and coworkers alike. She approached her career with empathy and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Outside of work, Betty enjoyed various hobbies and interests that brought joy to her life. She was an avid bingo player and took great pleasure in competing with friends and fellow players. As a member of the Moose Lodge, Betty cherished the sense of community it provided. Always up for some friendly competition, she loved to bowl. Additionally, Betty was a loyal supporter of the Staunton Braves baseball team and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing; she found solace in being surrounded by nature while casting a line into calm waters. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Carlton Eugene Wiseman and his wife, Sandra, and Gary Wayne Breeden; her beloved sister, Shirley Jean Breeden Irwin; her brother, Kenneth Lee Breeden; her grandchildren, Jennifer Jackson and April Whitaker; her great-grandchildren, Isaac, Autumn, Stormie, Misti, and Jason; her great-great-grandchildren, Addylin Wiseman and Elijah Turner; and several other great-great-grandchildren In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence C. Wiseman; a son, Clarence "Mike" Michael Wiseman; and a grandson, Carl Eugene Wiseman. A visitation to honor and celebrate Betty's life will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, October 6, 2023 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Arbor Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Augusta County. Serving as pallbearers will be Eugene Woolridge, Russell Woolridge, Jr. , Kevin Reid, Mike Botkin, Ricky Woolridge, David Turner, Mike Woolridge, and Stevie Huffman. Betty will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her compassionate spirit, dedication to others, and joyful presence will forever remain in our hearts.

Ruthie Alma (Fitzgerald) Dedrick, 85, wife of Freddie Harold Dedrick, of Stuarts Draft, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Augusta Health in Fishersville. Mrs. Dedrick was born in White Rock, Virginia on July 15, 1938, a daughter of the late Ottis Owen Fitzgerald and Eula Beatrice (Coffey) Fitzgerald. Ruthie was a 1955 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, a member of Mountain Top Christian Church, and retired as a bookkeeper from Dedrick Construction and Excavating. She enjoyed canning, cooking, making sweet tea, and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dedrick was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Lee Fitzgerald and four sisters, Madeline Rhodes, Florine Painter, Edith Stinnett, and Dottie Brown. Surviving, in addition to her husband of sixty-five years, are two daughters, Donna D. Yeago and her husband, John and Pamela K. Varney and her husband, Keith both of Stuarts Draft; a sister, Libby Dameron of Crimora; six grandchildren, Jacob, Marcus, Taylor and Adriana Yeago, Daniel Holloway, and LeAnna Varney; nine great-grandchildren, Oaklyn, Jaxton, Sawyer, Olivia, Kinsley, Silas, Tye, Addison and Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p. m. until 8:00 p. m. on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at their residence (41 Shirley Lane, Stuarts Draft, Virginia). A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p. m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at Mountain Top Christian Church in Tyro, Virginia by Pastor Doug Henderson. Doris Juanita (Pepper) Limerick, 92, widow of Enever Eugene "Sonny" Limerick, formerly of Mt. Sidney and Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023 at Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab in Fishersville. Mrs. Limerick was born in Hopewell, Virginia on October 5, 1931, a daughter of the late John E. Pepper, Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Lewis) Pepper. Doris was a retired Civilian from the U. S. Marine Corp. She was a member of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church and locally attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Fredericksburg Elks Lodge #875 Ladies Auxiliary and the Rebekah Victory Lodge #12. She was a devoted Redskins fan since the early 60's. Through her love of travel, Doris enjoyed sailing with her husband through the Chesapeake Bay, snow skiing, and participating in archery competitions around the country. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Limerick was preceded in death by two brothers, John Pepper, Jr. and Alvin Pepper; and three sisters, Margaret Gallahan, Lois Peyton, and Cora Verburg. Surviving, are two daughters, Susan L. McGee and her husband, Greg of Beaufort, NC and Crystal B. Limerick and her partner, Karla Bower of Lyndhurst; two grandchildren, Capt. Andrew Trout, U. S. N. and his wife, Erica and Amy Elizabeth Trout and her companion, Jeff Young; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt J. , Clara Vivian, and Olivia Clair; and special nieces, Val Verburg, Tammie Rinaldo, Vicki Peyton, and Faith Verburg. James Conway Brown, 85, of Staunton passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023 at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville. Born August 7, 1938 in Springfield, Va, he was a son of the late Everett Conway and Lula Elvira (Davis) Brown. James was a U. S. veteran having served his country honorably with the Navy. He attended Pisgah Baptist Church, Rice, VA. As an avid NASCAR fan, he enjoyed spending his Sundays rooting for Dale Earnhardt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Everett and Phillip Henry; and seven sisters, Silvia Eliza, Thelma Sue, Iva Louise, Nancy Dale, Lucie Ella, Clara Mae, and Betty Lula. Survivors include his children, Michael Brown and wife, Brenda, of Staunton, Justin Brown of Olympia, WA, and Bryan Rumph of Virginia; sister, Gladys Shorkey of Greenville; grandchildren, Clarissa Hoffman and husband, Tyler, Ashley Smith and husband, James, and Taylor Brown; great-grandchildren, Charlee Smith, Porter Smith, Rylan Smith, and Quinn Hoffman; and numerous nieces and nephews. John Walter Swink, 86, of Waynesboro, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023 at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born in Waynesboro, VA, the son of the late Walter A. Swink and the late Bessie B. Swink. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ann S. Hagwood. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Lafferty Swink; son, Timothy A. Swink and daughter, Kimberly S. Hardy (Jody); sister, Susan S. Johnson (Ronald); brother, Gary H. Swink (Dana); grandsons, Alexander Hardy and Joshua Hardy; numerous nieces and nephews. John graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1957, and went on to join the Army Reserves, stationed in Fort Knox, KY. He was an avid bowler, which led to meeting his future wife. John worked as a draftsman at Southern Stainless for over 30 years. He went on to work at Metfab, before finally retiring to enjoy golf, fishing and traveling across the country with his wife, Jean. John was one of the original members of Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church, watching it as it was built. He loved his church, serving God, and always put others first. Some of his passions at Glovier were serving as a youth leader, assisting with vacation bible school, singing in the choir, making Chrismon tree ornaments, making apple butter and taking photos for the church directory. With his kindness and humor, he never met a stranger. He enjoyed telling a good joke, often repeating it if he knew it made someone laugh. Throughout his life, John enjoyed taking his family on vacations to the beach and hosting extended family to ring in the New Year. Per his request, there will be no visitation or services. Alice Aldine (Duncan) Sterrett Cassada, 92, wife of Lawrence Edward Cassada, of Fishersville, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at The Regency at Augusta in Fishersville. Mrs. Cassada was born in Panther, West Virginia on October 7, 1931, the daughter of the late Robert Wills Duncan and Verba Lena (Waugh) Duncan. Alice was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and enjoyed traveling. She received her nurse training in Montgomery, West Virginia. Throughout her career as a registered nurse, she served in the operating room and in public health. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cassada was preceded in death by her first husband, Andrew F. Sterrett and her son, Alan Reid Sterrett. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three sons, Andrew F. "Drew" Sterrett, Robert "Bruce" Sterrett, and Madison "Matt" Sterrett and his wife, Lisa; two daughters-in-law, Brenda Sterrett and Cathy Sterrett; five grandchildren, Carrie Ann Sterrett, Adam Bruce Sterrett, Verba Marie "Ree" Sterrett, Travis Harris, and Jamie Brown; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Claire, Carol and Boden; and special friends, Elinor Garst and Gay Strickler. Dorothy L. Fitch "Ms. Dot" passed on to the next life on November 16, 2023. Ms. Dot retired from Genicom Corp and spent her retirement enjoying visits with family and friends. She was an avid gardener who spent many hours among her flowers in her beautiful yard. She was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Fitch; sons, Larry and Derek; parents James and Lilly Perkins; brother, James Perkins; sister, Louise Brooks and grandson, Nicholas. She is survived by sons, David (spouse, Denise), Darrell (spouse, Flo); and Jeffery; granddaughter, Kandice; and numerous loved cousins; nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed until we see her again. Roger Leon Eagle, 77, a retired professional firefighter with the City of Staunton, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born on October 4, 1946, in Augusta County, a son of the late James Ivan and Lena Virginia Sheffer Eagle. Roger was a 1966 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School. Later, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Throughout his military service, he demonstrated unwavering dedication to his country. The Navy instilled valuable qualities in him that he carried throughout his entire life. Roger dedicated his life to serving the community as a firefighter. With the City of Staunton Fire Department, he demonstrated unwavering courage and selflessness in the face of danger. Throughout his distinguished career, Roger made a significant impact on the safety and well-being of countless individuals. In addition to his remarkable career as a firefighter, Roger was an active member of Saint Paul's Church in Staunton. His passion for music led him to be a devoted member of the Chancel Choir for an impressive fifty-five years. His soulful voice resonated within the church walls and uplifted congregants week after week. Roger was also a founding member of Celebration!, a variety group known most for their memorable annual dinner theatres, of which he participated in for twenty-nine years. Beyond his contributions to the fire department and church community, Roger was deeply involved in several organizations. He served as past commander of the Disabled American Veteran's Waynesboro Skyline Chapter with utmost dedication. Through this role, he advocated for the rights and well-being of disabled veterans. Additionally, Roger was an esteemed member of the Retired Firefighters Breakfast Group where he cherished camaraderie with fellow retired firefighters. Roger is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Shirley Jean Potter Eagle; his two sons, David James Eagle and his wife, Tracey, and Kevin Wade Eagle and his fiancée, Mary Ann Griffin; and his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Inez Eagle and her fiancé, Kyle Turner, Isaac Caleb Euell Eagle, Audrey Elizabeth Eagle, Lleyton Campbell Anderson, and Caedmon Thomas Anderson. He is also survived by his sister, Norma Lee Eagle Sheets and her husband, Charles and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Robert "Bobby" Earl Eagle. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Saint Paul's Church with the Reverend Ryan Oswald officiating. Family and friends will process from the church under a police and fire department escort where the interment will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton with military rites.
