- Betty Lou Thedens, 87 years old of Ventura, IA, and formerly of Rowley, IA, died surrounded by her family, Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the Concord Care Center in Garner, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a. m. - Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church, Rowley, IA, with burial in the Rowley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p. m. - 7:00 p. m. , Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church. Memorials will be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Rowley, IA. Online condolences may be posted at Betty was born, September 14, 1935, in Morrison, IL, the daughter of Rev. Gordon Harold Arink and Wava Belle (Reynolds) Arink. Following her high school years, she attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls for two years and earned her teaching certificate. She taught school in Marengo, Monticello and Quasqueton, IA, and became a substitute teacher for many years. On June 8, 1957, Betty was united in marriage to James Peter Thedens at the First Presbyterian Church in Rowley. They made their home on the farm and raised their family there. Betty was named Master Farm Homemaker by Wallaces Farm Magazine and became a life member of the Master Farm Homemakers Guild. She was an active participant in the family farm operation. She was a member of the Presbyterian congregation. Betty is survived by her husband James "Jim" Thedens of Ventura, IA, two sons and daughters in law, Kevin (Janice) Thedens of Denver, IA, Kirk (Jo) Thedens of Denver, IA; one daughter and son in law, Kimberlee (Bill) Haskins of St. Ansgar, IA, and daughter in law, Laurie Thedens of Independence, IA; 5 grandchildren, Mackenzie (Kevin) Grondahl, Kathleen (Ryan) Holden, Andrew Thedens, Emily Thedens, Ernie Wevik; 3 great grandchildren, Emma (Gabriel) Tippett, Gabriel Holden and Eliana Grondahl. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kendall Thedens; one granddaughter, Kami Belle Haskins; one brother, Kenneth Arink and two sisters, Ann Kettler and Dorothy Myers. Darlene R. Higgins (Liebsch), 83, of Rowley, IA, passed away on Mondy, October 16, 2023, at the Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo, IA. Darlene was born the daughter of John and Armella (Kass) Sadler, on September 21, 1940, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, IA. Darlene grew up in rural Jesup, IA, and attended St Athanasius Catholic School. After school, she enjoyed working on her family farm and raised and processed chickens to bring them to market. She married Richard G. Higgins on October 8, 1962, at St Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup, IA. Together they made their home on a farm in Brandon, IA. There they raised seven children together and farmed for many years. In 1985, Darlene and Richard opened Paradise Donuts in Independence, IA. They ran their bakery for just over fifteen years and loved seeing their loyal customers. They closed Paradise Donuts in 2000. Richard passed away in 2007. On January 7, 2012, Darlene married Clarence L. Liebsch at the St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, IA. They made their home together in Independence. Clarence passed away on July 23, 2012. She is survived by her children; Lori (Jim) Baxley, Winthrop, IA, Linda (Scott) Justason, Rowley, IA, Debbie Higgins, Independence, IA, Diane Sands, Delhi, IA, Daryl (Alice) Higgins, Brandon, IA, Gary (Lois Thursteon-Higgins) Higgins, Peosta, IA, and Kenneth (Kim) Higgins, Walker, IA, twenty-four grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, two sisters; Sister Kathleen Sadler, Clinton, IA, and Rosemary Kleinheksel, of Waterloo, IA a brother, LeRoy (Marylee) Sadler, Waterloo, IA, and many nieces and nephews. Darlene is preceded in death by her parents; John and Armella Sadler, her first husband, Richard Higgins in 2007, and her second husband Clarence L. Liebsch in 2012, mother and father-in-law Emma and Andrew Higgins, a son-in-law Daniel Burns, a grandson Christopher Bruns, brothers-in-law, Lyle Kleinheksel and Robert Higgins, sister-in-law, Mary Ann Bissell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 20, 2023, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, IA with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be held at Walker Cemetery in Walker, IA. - Donald W. Hemsath, 87, of Independence, IA, and formerly of Rowley, IA, died Thursday, October 5, 2023, at ABCM - West Campus in Independence after a long battle with Leukemia. Memorial Services will be 2:00 p. m. - Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, with Pastor Greg DeBoer officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 p. m. until services at the church. Private family burial will follow at the Rowley Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Bechter-Boies VFW Post #2440 assisted by the United States Army. Donald William Hemsath was born August 4, 1936, in Black Hawk County, near Dewar, IA, the son of Ernest Fredrick "Mike" Hemsath and Pearl Leona (Myers) Hemsath. He attended school at Dewar and began working at an early age. On November 4, 1955, he was united in marriage to Carol Ann Gosse at Bennington Lutheran Church in Waterloo, IA. The couple made their home in Waterloo and Don worked construction and also as a mechanic. They moved several times in the area before settling in Rowley in 1968. Don worked for the REC as a lineman for 30 years, and was a member of the IBEW in Waterloo. He enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and he loved woodworking. He was also an avid gardener, planting many Good Friday Potatoes over the years. Don was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Don is survived by two sons, Rick (Deb) Hemsath and Scott (Kathy) Hemsath, both of Rowley, IA, and one daughter, Pam (Vince) O'Loughlin of Independence, IA. He is also survived by six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Winder of Cedar Falls, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol; one brother, Claude Hemsath; and five sisters, Darlene Rigdon, Dorothy Cook, Betty Knox, Katy Marks, and Lois Ann Rookaird. Mary L. Blaness, 61, of Rowley, IA died on Friday, December 17, 2022, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA. Mary was born on June 9, 1961, in Independence, IA the daughter of Raymon L. and Patricia A. (Morrisey) Rasmussen. Mary grew up on the family farm in Rowley, IA, and attended the Rowley School. She was a 1980 graduate of Independence High School and moved to Arizona to start working in healthcare. In 1987, Mary moved back to Iowa and started working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Mental Health Center (MHI) in Independence, IA. She met Jeff Blaness while working at MHI. Together they built a home in Rowley, IA in 2000. Mary loved helping Jeff's children get through school and watching them grow up. She and Jeff were married 0n March 7, 2006, in Las Vegas, NV. In the mid-1990s, Mary partnered with Tom Crawford and purchased the Rush Park Bar. She loved socializing with the customers, and many became friends throughout the years. They farmed near Rowley where they were partners in farming and were blessed with five children: Brian, Mark, Amy, Jason and Amber. Nancy was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend, known by her family as Nana Belle, Granny and G-ma. In her spare time, Nancy enjoyed collecting and displaying season decorations, playing cards and games with family and friends and going to the grandkids activities. Linda M. Kress, 71, of Rowley, IA, died on Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Unity Point- St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA. Linda was born on July 14, 1950, the daughter of George H. and Verna M. (Shneeman) Knight. She attended the Jesup Community Schools. On February 12, 1970, she enlisted into the United States Women's Army Corps and served as a practical nurse. Linda received an honorable discharge in 1971. She married Lerry L. Shepard on November 30, 1971, and together they had a daughter, Dawn. They later were divorced. Linda continued to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Lafayette Hospital in Lafayette Indiana for several years. She later worked as a security guard at the Alcoa Co. in Lafayette, IN, and later Iowa Ham and the Mental Health Institute in Independence, IA. On June 28, 1986, Linda married Rick L. Kress at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Together they made their home in rural Rowley, IA, and raised two children together. Linda went back to school and received an auto mechanics certification from Hawkeye community college and later an associate degree in accounting from Kirkwood Community College. She worked for several years as an accountant for Freeman Electric and H&R Block. She is survived by her husband Rick Kress, Rowley, IA, her two children, Dawn (Nick) Runde, Manchester, IA, and Aaron (Dannielle) Kress, Cedar Rapids, IA, eleven grandchildren, a sister, Emily (John) Daws, Dike, IA, and a sister-in-law, Linda Knight, Gilbertville, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Verna Knight, and four brothers, John, Howdy, Ed, and Jimmy Knight. John L. "Jack" Evers, 84, of Independence, IA, formally of Rowley, IA, died on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence, IA. Jack was born on June 14, 1937, in Hopkinton, IA, the son of Michael and Myrtle (Leonard) Evers. In his early years, his family moved throughout eastern Iowa and settled in Winthrop, IA in 1950. There Jack attended Winthrop High School and graduated in 1956. While in school Jack was known as a talented baseball and basketball player and won many games with the Winthrop Town Team throughout eastern Iowa. He went on to proudly serve in the United States Army until 1962. Upon his return to Iowa, he continued farming in Winthrop, until the family purchased a farm in Rowley, IA. He later purchased and took over all the operations of the farm in 1988. Jack loved sports and was known for his knowledge of sports facts. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan. But what he enjoyed most was watching his nieces and nephews compete. He always attended their sporting events throughout years, and always rooted for them.
