Betty J. Powell, a cherished member of her community and a devoted woman of faith, passed away peacefully at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL, on September 7, 2023. Born on November 13, 1935, in Licking Township, west of Annapolis, IL, she attended a one-room schoolhouse growing up and would eventually graduate early from Hutsonville High School in 1952 at the tender age of 16. It was at this time that she moved to Robinson, IL, and found her lifelong career as a secretary at the law office of Manford Cox and Carroll Cox. Committed to her profession, she remained with the firm for an astounding 62 years, serving with dignity, intelligence, and absolute discretion before retiring from Cox, Phillips, Weber, Tedford, Heap, and Ayres in 2014. Outside of the office, Betty was a woman of many talents. A talented seamstress, she delighted in sewing and knitting, often crafting beautiful garments for her loved ones. Her skills in the kitchen were noteworthy, particularly when it came to baking. Whether it was her exceptional sourdough bread, Parker house rolls, or divine cookies, family and friends eagerly anticipated her culinary delights. Additionally, Betty had a green thumb, tending to her garden full of vibrant geraniums and many other flowers. Anyone who knew her could attest to the fact that Betty had a deep love for animals, especially cats. Her adoration was such that she had her house adorned with pictures of her feline friends, and she went to the extent of walking one of her cats with a leash and halter! Despite her reserved demeanor, her daring spirit often surprised many, firmly believing the mantra, "Anything a man can do, I can do!" This spirit resonated in her actions, making her an inspiring figure to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Betty Powell was a pillar of strength, faith, and courage. Whether it was braving snowy winters with tire chains to get to work or mowing her lawn with her John Deere, she was always ready to face whatever challenge came her way. Her legacy is one of resilience, devotion, and a boundless love for her family, friends, and faith. Her walk with Jesus manifested itself in devotion to her home church, the Palestine First United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher and a staple of every gathering. Though we will miss her presence, we know that she is not gone, just gone from our sight and in the loving arms of her Savior. She is survived by her sister, LaDonna Stant; by her sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Mary Jo & Keith Holmes and Susan Bonham; and by two special nephews, Patrick & Donna Bonham (and their family) and Jonathan Bonham. She married LeRoy Espy Powell on November 11, 1979, and he preceded her in death on March 18, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Berl & March (Tracey) Bonham; her sister, Janet Bonham (in infancy); her brothers, Larry Bonham and Roger Bonham; and her brother-in-law, Roy Don Stant. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p. m. on Monday, September 11th, at the Palestine Cemetery, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. In honor of her love of her four-legged companions, memorials may be made to the "Crawford County Humane Society" with envelopes available at the cemetery. Peggy Maxwell

Peggy Maxwell

Age - 68

November 28, 2023

Peggy Anah (Roy) Maxwell, 68, of Duncanville, IL, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family. Born on July 18, 1955, in Vincennes, IN, Peggy grew up in Duncanville. Her education journey took her from grade school in Flat Rock to high school in Robinson before finally culminating at Lincoln Trail College. Her early ventures in the workforce led her to a position as a CNA at a nursing home in Robinson, transitioning in 1972 to Crawford Memorial Hospital, where she met the love of her life, Paul S. Maxwell. After a brief courtship, the two were married on January 23, 1974, marking the start of nearly four decades of shared joy, companionship, and family life. It was in family gatherings and teachings that Peggy truly shone. A devoted mother not only to her own three children, Jeannie, Stephenie, and Paul D. , but also to four of her brother's children whom she helped raise: Shelly, Bobby, Charles, and James. Each could attest to the fact that Peggy possessed an intrinsic knack for child-rearing. She loved to take the kids camping and fishing, teaching them not only the ways of nature but also the ways of life, embodied through her values of kindness and compassion, especially to those in need. Craftwork (particularly crocheting) and cooking were valued skills in the Maxwell household, passed on to generations by Peggy with pride and love. These were just a few of this dear woman's pastimes, as her personal interests were as diverse as they were engaging. Though she had a particular fondness for roses, she was a lover of all types of flowers, evidenced by the innumerable hours she spent in her garden. Bird watching gave her joy as well, and she enjoyed the company of the cardinals and hummingbirds who made their way to her home. Peggy was also a talented piano player, with her musical repertoire filled primarily with gospel songs and hymns, songs she raised in worship at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Palestine, where she had been a member since Easter of 1985. Back home in Duncanville, she could often be spotted riding her Mule ATV around the area, followed by her grandsons on their dirt bikes. One of Peggy's most unmistakable qualities was the sheer joy she derived from her loved ones, especially her grandchildren. This was apparent in every family get-together and cookout, where her role as the matriarch was as undisputed as her love of lighthouses. Peggy Maxwell, your life has been a beacon of strength, love, and selflessness that will continue to light the way for many. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Rest in peace, knowing your legacy continues to shine a light within those whom you have loved. She is survived by her children & their spouses, Jeannie & Kenny Goff (Duncanville, IL), Stephenie & Chad Weaver (Hutsonville, IL), and Paul D. & Kristi Maxwell (Duncanville, IL); by her grandchildren, Beth Bland, Kenneth Goff Jr & his fiancee Kaylee, Ayvonna Goff, Jordan & Dakota Christian, Andrew Weaver, Isaac Weaver, Chloe Weaver, Dodge Maxwell, Gunner Maxwell, and Bryce Maxwell; by four great-grandchildren; by her brother, Ralph Roy (Evansville, IN); as well as several nieces and nephews, including Shelly & Kyle Stout (New Hebron, IL), Robert "Bobby" & Misty Roy (Robinson, IL), Charles Roy (Evansville, IN), James & Tai Roy (Duncanville, IL), Cloudy Roy (Robinson, IL), and Tyson Roy (Robinson, IL), all of whom she helped raise. Janice Knapp

Age - 89

November 14, 2023

Janice Knapp, a woman of boundless kindness and gentle warmth, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2023, at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL. Born on June 16, 1934, in Palestine, IL, to Frank & Zelda Shew. Janice was a proud member of the Palestine High School Class of 1952. She furthered her education at Eastern Illinois University, where she indulged her passion for music before leaving early to marry the love of her life, Beauford Keith Knapp, whom she married on December 31, 1954. Janice's professional life was a testament to her tenacity and unyielding spirit. After moving to the Chicago area, she had a couple of jobs before joining the Ferrara Candy Company in 1962, where she dedicated 37 years of her life. Rising to Vice President Office Administration at a time when women were scarcely seen in leadership roles, Janice left her indelible mark on the company's legacy. She later embarked on an admirable 18-year career with Green Meadows Property Management before hanging up her hat for good at the age of 83, but not before setting an example of grit and passion that inspired all who knew her!Family meant everything to Janice. Following her retirement from Ferrara, she moved to Batavia, IL, to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She filled her free moments there with laughter, love, and heartfelt conversations. She loved nothing more than seeing her loved ones flourish, and she took great joy in supporting her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at sporting events and celebrating their victories. She loved having family come and spend time with her at her vacation home in Naples, FL, where she temporarily visited off and on for several years. No matter where she was, the doors of her home were always open, offering the warmth of her kindness and the opportunity to create memories that will forever be etched in the hearts of her loved ones. Janice will always be remembered for her efforts to cultivate happiness in the lives of those around her. She had a large heart that beat to bless others, and she was always there for anyone who needed her. She was as compassionate as she was caring, always ready to offer a word of encouragement or to pray for those suffering or in distress. Janice was, after all, a woman of faith. As a young woman, she filled the Palestine First Christian Church sanctuary with piano music that was as worshipful as it was beautiful and would continue to give God glory through the way she lived out her 89 years. Though we mourn our loss, we know that she is gone from our sight, that is all. She is more alive now than she ever was on this side of eternity. Until we meet again, may the threads of love, devotion, and resilience that Janice Knapp weaved into our hearts become her lasting legacy in us. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Hasil & Tom Corcoran (Hendersonville, TN); by her grandchildren, Austin Hasil (Bloomingdale, IL) and Alana Hasil (St. Charles, IL); by her sisters, Sarah Liston (Palestine, IL) and Arlene Shorter (Sullivan, IN); by her brother & sister-in-law, Ronald & Georgana Shew (Fort Myers, FL); by her sister-in-law, Jackie Shew (Lexington, SC); as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 45 years, Beauford "Keith" Knapp; by her parents, Frank & Zelda (Duke) Shew; by her sister, Laveda (Shew) Massie; by her brother, Carl Lee Shew; and by her nephews and niece, Steven, Lisa, and Ronnie Massie. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a. m. on Thursday, November 16th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Robert Inboden

Robert Inboden

Age - 81

November 12, 2023

Robert D. "Bob" Inboden, age 81, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home at Mt. Vernon, IL on November 9, 2023. Bob was born on September 9, 1942, in Robinson, IL, and grew up in Oblong, IL, where he was part of the Oblong High School Class of 1960. Bob was a master carpenter, and he was committed to perfection through his 33 years of quality work with Carpenters Local #2253. Though he retired from the union in 1997, he stayed busy with his own business, Boborsons Construction, and worked as a contractor for a total of 26 years before finally retiring in 2017. Throughout his career, Bob proved to be something of a professor of his trade, turning complex projects into masterpieces thanks to his attention to detail. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bob was an ardent outdoorsman. He may be notably remembered for his lifelong dedication to and love for hunting, marked by his specific affinity for coon hunting. Bob not only raised and sold coon dogs but garnered awards and accolades for his tremendous talent. In recent years, he expanded his hunting repertoire by embracing deer hunting and was a master at hunting morels. His zest for the wilderness was also reflected through a passion for fishing, a pastime he enjoyed alongside a number of friends. Unsurprisingly, Bob was a member of the Wabash Valley Coonhunters Club in Robinson, the Mt. Vernon Gun & Sportsman Club, and the Goshen Trail Longrifle Club. He was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge #819 and volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Mt. Vernon and at the Jefferson County Historical Village, where he served as a guide and pitched in wherever help was needed. Bob was also a trained HAM radio operator who enjoyed sharing his knowledge through teaching HAM radio classes. This was perhaps surprising to many, as educators are known for their patience. . . and Bob was not! His impatience may very well have been born out of his outstanding, almost photographic memory, which undoubtedly forged in him an analytical approach to life's intricacies. That being said, as exceptional as his work and attention to detail were, Bob Inboden will also be remembered for his generous spirit and heartfelt care for those in need. He would routinely stop whatever he was doing if he saw that he could lend someone a hand. He was known to give others not just his time but his talents as well, and in so doing, made the world a better place. Bob's generosity of spirit reflected his dedication as a follower of Jesus. He was baptized at Highland Avenue Baptist Church in August of 1968, and because of his faith, we find hope and assurance that today, he is at home with his Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Earnest Inboden, Sr. & Mary Deborah (Rich) Inboden; his sisters, Barbara Ann Inboden (in infancy) and Patricia Rich; his brothers, Ronald Eugene Inboden (in infancy), Donald "Doc" Inboden, Clifford E. Inboden, Jr. , and Roger B. Inboden; and by his daughter-in-law, Jamie Inboden. Since 1999, he has found companionship with Margaret "Nancy" (Charleton) Crabill, and the two were married on March 23, 2020. She survives. He is also survived by his children & their spouses, Doug Inboden, Sherri & Mike Napier, and Gary & Joey Inboden; by his grandchildren, Dylan Inboden, Christopher Helmouth, Josh Helmouth, and Randie & Jeremy Huglett; by his step-children, Mark & Stacie Goodheart, Tom & Jill Goodheart, and Tammy Bergman; by his step-grandchildren, Chelsea & Steven Endenfield, James Bergman, Mackenzie Goodheart, Madison Goodheart, and Morgan Goodheart; by three great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; by his good friend and former wife, Esther Inboden; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, November 15th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, with Pastor Brad Harris officiating. Burial will be in the Prier-Shire Cemetery, rural Stoy, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the "St. Jude Children's Research Hospital", with envelopes available at the funeral home.Show more

Landon Tracy

Landon Tracy

Age - 24

November 7, 2023

It is with heavy yet immensely proud hearts that we remember the life of Landon Tracy, who was tragically taken from us on November 3, 2023. Born on March 16, 1999, in Robinson, IL, Landon made his 24 years matter through his commitment to honest living, dedication to excellence, and devotion to his friends and family. Landon is survived by his father, Rick, and his siblings, Erica & Greg Staley, Alisha Hatfield, and Derek & Katie Tracy. His nieces and nephews, Cierra, Madi, Bri, Lydia, Bentley, Charley, Brentlee, Keenan, and Olivia, will hold dear their fond memories of their uncle. He also leaves behind an extended family of several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Preceding him in death were his beloved mother, Faye (Brown) Tracy, and his grandparents. Though his early years were spent crossing the country in his dad's semi, Robinson was always Landon's home. It was here that he developed a robust work ethic beginning at the tender age of nine when he picked up a newspaper route. At eleven, he also started mowing yards and scrimped and saved over the next few years to buy his first truck at the age of fifteen! When he wasn't busy running cross country for Robinson High School, he was putting in hours working at County Market. It was at this time that he took a heavy interest in his building trades class, which developed in him skills that would serve him well for the duration of his short but successful career. Though he worked briefly for Consolidated Concrete following his 2017 graduation from RHS, he soon found his true calling as a carpenter and joined Carpenters' Local 243. His passion for scaffold work was ignited at the Marathon Refinery in Robinson, a job so fulfilling that it molded his career direction. Renowned for his excellent work and sheer dedication, he was a hardworking, admired professional whose passion was so evident that he was sent back to RHS to inspire the next generation of carpenters for a couple of the school's career days. His latest professional endeavor found him at the BP Refinery in Whiting, IN, where he did his part to build, maintain, and inspect the refinery's scaffolding. Landon was not just a hard worker; he knew how to truly enjoy life. His thrill for adventure was evident in his ownership of not one but three motorcycles over the years, the latest being a Harley Davidson. He was also a proud owner of two trucks and a house - an impressive feat for a 24-year-old! In addition to his professional hunger, Landon had a substantial appetite for food and fun. He loved to explore new diners and dives and often took in the thrill of dirt track and NASCAR races, the fun of truck and tractor pulls, and the joy of country music concerts. He was also known to attend derbies and worked on derby cars alongside his buddies. They could each attest to the fact that Landon was a vivacious, hardworking, kind-hearted soul who was ever eager to see others happy. He will forever be remembered for his generosity of spirit and the infectious joy that seemed to pour out of him. Though we grieve that the life we remember was all too brief, we can also rejoice in knowing that Landon filled his 24 years with real and genuine living. Thanks for the memories!A time of visitation will be held from 9:00 a. m. -12:00 p. m. on Saturday, November 11th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will immediately follow and be held at 12:00 p. m. on Saturday, with Pastor Eric Hankins & Danny Dennis officiating. Burial will be in the Tohill Cemetery. Age - 75

October 25, 2023

The world has lost a remarkable life, Charleen "Char" Finch, whose spirit illuminated the darkness even brighter than the most radiant morning star. Charleen was born on December 29, 1947, in Robinson, IL, and peacefully passed away at her home in Evansville, IN, on October 20, 2023. Char's journey of life was intimately shared with her beloved husband, Craig Saxton, whom she married on June 29, 2011, and who survives her. Her legacy will continue to bloom in the lives of her son & daughter-in-law, Gabe & Cathy Finch, and granddaughters Sydney and Ally. Charleen also leaves behind her step-children, Kodie Nessen, Melissa Comer, Becky Call, Michael Saxton, and James Saxton, along with six step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Soon after, she transitioned into WJPS in the 90s, maintaining her renowned "Trixie" character. For over 20 years, Char represented DJ Mike Harvey, managing all work for his show, "Super Gold", and was crucial in connecting with affiliates and pulling Super Gold Sock Hops together. A lover of 50's rock and roll and doo-wop music, Char reveled in the bygone era to the extent of owning a poodle skirt! Over the years, she was fortunate enough to meet many iconic figures from the 50s, including Dick Clark and Elvis Presley. Her other interests were as vibrant as she was - a master of crafting and scrapbooking, she was also an ace in the kitchen, as evidenced by the many mouth-watering casseroles she was known to whip together for those she loved. Char was a generous, caring soul who adhered to the age-old idiom of greeting friends like family, ensuring that everyone received a warm hug. She nurtured us all with love and was our biggest cheerleader, encouraging us to live with that same dazzling radiance of spirit that marked her 75 years with us. Charleen "Char" Finch lived a vibrant, joy-filled life. With an unmatched energy and a keen sense of humor, she touched people's hearts in a unique way that could never be replicated. She was a remarkable woman who, even in her passing, continues to spread smiles and laughter through the memories she left behind. So let us not remember Char with sadness but with joy for having had her in our lives. We celebrate her spirit, her laughter, and, most importantly, we celebrate the love she so generously gave to each of us. This love will live on in our hearts for as long as we have the breath to speak her name. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a. m. -12:00 p. m. on Saturday, November 4th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A memorial service will immediately follow on Saturday and be held at 12:00 p. m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Don Cavins officiating. During the service, family and friends will have the opportunity to share some of their favorite memories of this once-in-a-lifetime soul. Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery. For those unable to attend, a live stream of the service will be available at www. goodwinefuneralhomes. com/live-stream/live-stream. Instead of flowers, her family simply asks that people "pay it forward", and do something kind for someone who needs help, encouragement, or a little bit of extra support".Show more

Teresa Keller

Teresa Keller

Age - 61

October 20, 2023

Teresa "Mama Kay" Keller, a jubilant spirit and a beacon of warmth, passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2023, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. She was born in Olney, IL, on January 28, 1962, to Patricia (Shidler) Marlowe Deisher and attended Richland County High School in Olney. She began her career as a bartender at Toot's Bar, where she transformed small talks into lasting friendships. Her later employments included EH Baare in Robinson, Lexel in Hutsonville, and Pioneer Labels in Palestine. She was not just a worker but a loyal colleague who found joy in the camaraderie of her workplace. Like the butterflies she loved, she flitted around others, spreading love and joy, her laughter being the sweet nectar that drew folks in. She had a lasting effect on everyone she met - she listened, offered kind (and honest) words, decorated the world with optimism, and was swift to offer comfort with an embracing hug, a hot bowl of soup, or a plate full of biscuits and gravy. Her love for feeding people went beyond her kitchen; she nourished hearts. Though she enjoyed numerous pastimes - like playing pool, reading romance novels all day, and jamming out to tunes by AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Journey, and REO Speedwagon - her heart belonged to her kids, those she birthed and the ones she adopted along the way. Suffice it to say, if her kids loved you, so did she, and she would treat you as if you were her own. Though she loved her children, being a "Mimi" to her grandchildren was the delight of her life, and she held a special bond with each of them, as evidenced by the unique nicknames she gave them at birth. In its final beat, the heart that loved so fiercely and laughed so joyfully has found rest, leaving the world a little dimmer but much kinder. Teresa "Mama Kay" Keller will be dearly missed, but her legacy of unconditional love, unadulterated joy, and unceasing optimism will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have shared in her incredible journey. She is survived by her children, Tory Marlowe (Glen Ullin, ND), Donnie & wife Chelsea Keller (Noble, IL), Shelley Keller (Robinson, IL), and Amber Keller; by her grandkids, Dulcy Marlowe, Syla Keller, Paycen Keller, Ahlayna Keller, Hyndrix Shoulders, Ryder McCormick, and Dakota McCormick; by many more "kids" and "grandkids" that she picked up and adopted along the way; by her mother, Patricia (Shidler) Marlowe Deisher; by her brothers and their families; as well as her former husband and father of her children, Donald Keller. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bill. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p. m. on Tuesday, October 24th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Services will immediately follow at 6:00 p. m. , with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. During the service, family and friends will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and favorite memories of times spent with this dear soul. Memorial contributions may be made to her memorial fund, with checks made payable to "Goodwine Funeral Homes". Her family will conduct another celebration of her life later in November, with a date yet to be determined.Show more
