Bertha San Segundo passed away Sunday October 1st, 2023. She meets the love of her life Angel and her middle son Pedro in heaven. She is survived by her son's Angelo and Carlos, her son-in-law Roger, her daughter-in-law Beth, and her Grandchildren Madeline and Sebastian. She was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a grandmother, a Tia, a friend, but more than that she was a blessing to all who knew her. She was born, Bertha De Lugo Arenas, in Harlingen, Texas on September 16th, 1945, she moved to NYC with her family in her early teens. She was studying at the University of Ole Miss when she met the love of her life in her family home as he had a meeting with her father. They felt an instant connection and began writing each other as he was in New York and she was away at University. He didn't speak English and she didn't speak Spanish, they learned from each other via love letters. The end of that semester she packed up all of her possessions and met Angel first at the train station and then went home to ask for permission to marry. It was granted on the condition that she finish her degree. She went on to get a Masters in Counseling. She was a pastors' wife in the Presbyterian church for 30 years. She was also a high school spanish teacher and a high school counselor. She worked at the local community college teaching there as well. She maintained a beautiful home full of love and vibrant with life. She sang in the choir, danced in the shower, and generally embraced each day with expectant joy. She loved God deeply and knew his love to her core. She was a heart full of joy and a light spirit on a bad day. She could make you feel better with just a simple smile. She spoke truth both when easy but always when hard. You never doubted her words. She was funny and always up for playful humor. She enjoyed her boys shenanigans and they loved it everytime she called them Tontos. They often pushed her to that just for the reaction. She rejoiced with those that rejoiced and counseled as if every person was the most important one she had ever met. She gave blessings at the end of every call. She thrived on her families successes and loved even the smallest details in someones day. She could patiently listen on the phone to her sons recount their days at work and would always end the call with God be with you. Her home was warm with love and rich with delicious food. Her grandchildren talk about Nana rice and beans for the delicacy that is was not the staple it was in her home. She loved to try new recipes and her secret ingredient was always love. Her cooking was a la mano but always delicious, she would teach you with phrases like salt it like the sea, or just a dash of that, she knew on sight what was just right for every dish. Though she would often tell the story of spending several days over a stove, cooking for a hoard of people for a special event, and making everything only to have everyone compliment just the bread from the ShopRite. She found that story hilarious. Her daughter in law once called her in new Jersey for an icing recipe (that Carlos wanted) only to be told by Bertha that she had no idea she wasn't Julia Child! Her legacy lives on in her surviving sons and her sweet grandbabies. Please join us to honor Bertha's legacy on Monday October 9th at 10am for services at Harrell Funeral Home at 4435 Frontier Trail Austin, TX 78745. There will be a viewing and slide show from 9-10am, the services will be from 10-11, and graveside there after Onion Creek Memorial Park 11610 Chapel Ln, Austin, TX 78748.

Vera Questa

Vera Questa

Age - 93

December 1, 2023

Brethren, we gather here to celebrate the homecoming of a beloved child of God, Sister Vera M. Questa, who walked faithfully upon this earth from the 21st of September in the year of our Lord, 1930, until the 27th of November 2023. Born under the open skies of Saint Bernard, Ohio, Sister Vera was a beacon of light throughout her life, and she has now been called to the Lord's embrace in the peaceful city of Austin, Texas, departing from us through the gentle passage of natural causes. Sister Vera was a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Though her formal education was momentarily paused as she cared for her ailing grandmother, she triumphantly returned to her studies, securing her GED with the determination that would come to define her. Her pursuit of knowledge did not cease there, for she ventured into night school, earning her degree as a bookkeeper, a vocation in which she served with diligence and grace, first at Mount Airy Hospital and later amidst the ranks of the Internal Revenue Service. In her earthly journey, Sister Vera was joined in holy matrimony to Brother Vincent Questa, who preceded her in glory. Together they crafted a family of love and legacy, a treasure she leaves behind in the hearts of her daughter, Catherine M. Nations; her grandchildren, Christina M. Pepper, Robert Nations, and Jennifer Henderson; and all those whose lives they have touched. Our sister's hands, ever busy and ever creating, found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was a formidable force on the bowling lanes, a solver of puzzles that confounded the mind, and together with her beloved Vincent, a silver medalist in pairs roller skating, gliding across the rink as though they were angels on wheels. Vera's creativity flourished in her ceramics shop, a place of creation and community, and in the quiet moments, her knitting needles clicked like a choir of crickets on a summer's eve, fashioning blankets and garments with love woven into every stitch. Sister Vera served with distinction as a commander for the auxiliary of disabled veterans, offering her strength and support to those who had borne the burden of battle. Her service was a testament to her faith-filled heart, a beacon of hope for those in need of comfort and camaraderie. To speak of Sister Vera is to speak of a soul who embodied friendliness, a woman whose creative spark ignited inspiration in others, and a faithful servant who walked hand in hand with her Lord and Savior. Her laughter was a melody that echoed in the halls of fellowship, her counsel a balm to troubled hearts, and her presence a gift of immeasurable worth. As we bid farewell to Sister Vera, let us not dwell in the valleys of sorrow, but rather let us lift our eyes to the hills, from whence cometh our help. For in the tapestry of life, each thread Vera wove was one of joy, kindness, and unwavering faith. Her legacy is etched not only in the memories of those she loved but in the very fabric of the community she so cherished. So let us rejoice, for Sister Vera M. Questa has finished her course, she has kept the faith, and now she rests in the eternal peace of our Heavenly Father. Her journey on this earth has concluded, but her spirit soars in the heavens, dancing among the stars, forever a part of the celestial chorus singing praises unto the Most High. May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p. m. until 6:00 p. m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Harrell Funeral Home. The Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10:00 a. m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Harrell Funeral Home. A Graveside Ceremony will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.Show more
