Bernice C. Weiner of Sharon, formerly of Swampscott, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2023 with her family by her side. Bernice grew up in Malden, MA, the daughter of the late Alec and Harriet Shaievitz. The wife of the late Melvin J Weiner - they were married for 35 years before his passing in 1984. She was the loving mother of Janet Weiner of Needham, Sandra Eskin (Don) of Sharon and Linda Sukernek (Warren) of Needham. Beloved Nana to Jenna Sukernek and Dr. Justin Sukernek. She was the sister of the late Gerald Shaievitz. Adored by Abby Eskin (Zak), Zoe and Smith. Bernice was an avid bridge and mah-jongg player, a member of Hadassah and longtime member of Kernwood Country Club. Graveside services to be held on October 9th at 10:00 am at Beth El Cemetery, 506 Lowell Street, Peabody, MA 01960. Shiva to be held at the home of Sandra and Don Eskin following the service and on Tuesday from 1:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm. John Patrick 'Hoffa' Hoffman passed away on November 29, 2023, at the age of 69 in Swampscott, Massachusetts. He was born on March 4, 1954, in Lynn, Massachusetts. John was a beloved father, life partner, stepfather, grandfather, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. John is survived by his daughter Valerie Ashe and her husband, Joseph Ashe of Tewksbury; his life partner of 20 years, Karen McKay of Swampscott, and his stepson Christopher Carnevale and his wife Florence of Beverly. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren John and Ellie Ashe of Tewksbury, Leah and William Carnevale of Beverly, Connor McKay of Swampscott, Lillian McKay of Beverly, Shaun and Alexandra McKay of New Bedford, and Gianni, Gianna, and Alannah McKay of Lynn. John is also survived by his sister Patricia Ann Knight and her husband, Wayne of Lynn; his brother Peter Hoffman, and his wife, Fraser of Tucson, Arizona. , his brother-in-law Frank Pedro of Cambridge. He will be remembered fondly by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Charles "Red" and Virginia Hoffman, his brother James Hoffman, his sister Peggy Pedro, his brother Michael Hoffman, and his aunt Eleanor Whyte. John attended Swampscott High School, where he played football and was a proud member of the 1972 Superbowl team. He was an Aggannis All-Star and was inducted into the Swampscott High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. After high school, John later pursued higher education at Concordia University and Curry College. He dedicated his life to serving others. He began his career in law enforcement at the Salem Jail and then moved on to serve the town of Swampscott as a Police officer for 20 years. Additionally, John coached high school football for 24 years. He began his coaching career at Lynn English High School in 1978. In 1980 he began coaching in Swampscott, where he positively impacted the lives of countless young athletes. He instilled his 'I can and I will' mantra into every young athlete he crossed paths with. John was a man who was larger than life and always looked out for everyone. He always had a helping hand or words of wisdom to offer anyone in need. Services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Church located at 174 Humphrey St, Swampscott, MA. Visiting hours 9 am-11 am with a funeral mass to follow. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lynn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to Tedy's Team, a charitable organization that supports stroke survivors. John Patrick Hoffman will be remembered for his dedication to his community, his love for his family, and his passion for coaching football. Robert "Bob" Murphy, 86, of Swampscott, passed away on Sunday, November 26, after a long and happy life centered on family, faith, and service. Born on April 4, 1937, in Boston to Cornelius and Norma (Duggan) Murphy, he grew up in West Roxbury. He graduated from Boston Latin School, received a bachelor's degree from Boston College, and a graduate degree from Columbia University. While living in New York City, he met his beloved wife of 60 years, Patricia (Skinder), coincidentally from Jamaica Plain, on the Staten Island Ferry. They married in 1963 and had four children. He was a devoted father to David, James, Catherin ("Camie") and her husband Jose Anico, and Peter and his wife Christina (DiAngelis) Murphy. In 1969, Bob and Pat moved the family from New York to Swampscott to be closer to their respective families. Bob was a loving brother to his five siblings: Katherine (deceased), Paul (deceased), Bishop William Murphy, Virginia (deceased), and Sister Paul St. Katherine, SND. He was the beloved "Papa" to his seven grandchildren: Erik, Laura, Jessica, Cooper, Maya, Joshua, and Noah. Bob had a distinguished career in public health as a Hospital Planner for the Archdiocese of New York, an executive with the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Assistant Vice President of Professional Relations at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Assistant Commissioner of Mental Health for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was also an active member of the Swampscott community, serving as a town meeting member, Chairman of Swampscott's Board of Health, and Select Board, President, and coach of Swampscott Little League, and lector and CCD teacher at St. John the Evangelist Church. Bob will be remembered for his deep voice (and distinctive singing voice), dry sense of humor, kindness, and generosity. He loved sports, family dinners, traveling with his wife, walking, and reading mysteries. The funeral mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott on Friday, December 1, at 11 AM. The family will be present in the church at 10 AM to welcome friends and relatives before the mass. Burial will be private.Show more

Betty Dean Holmes, age 95, a Swampscott resident, died on November 6, 2023. She was married for 64 years to Andrew B. Holmes, Jr. who predeceased her in 2010. Born in Dennisport, Massachusetts on July 15, 1928, the third daughter of the late Louis E. Dean and Esther Moody Dean, and raised in Dennisport and Hyannis, she graduated from Barnstable High School in 1946. After raising her children, she continued her education at Essex Agricultural and Technical School and received her Associate Degree in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management in 1977. She continued her studies, part-time, at Salem State College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1990 and her Master's degree in 1994. Holmes worked as the relief Food Service Manager at Abbot House Nursing Home for a number of years. Later she worked several years as assistant to the Suggestion Administrator in the Human Resource Group and in the Professional Recruiting office at GE Riverworks in Lynn. . Holmes was a Swampscott Town Meeting member for more than twenty years. She belonged to the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, the Swampscott Historical Society, the Dennis Historical Society, and the Harwich Historical Society. A devoted genealogist, she researched her family history to document her Mayflower descent and joined the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. A talented knitter and embroiderer, she won blue ribbons at the Topsfield Fair for her crewel embroideries. She enjoyed writing and saw her stories published by Yankee Magazine, the Dennis and Harwich Historical Societies, and the Swampscott Reporter. Friends and family took pleasure in her remarkable talent for collecting and telling stories. She was well known for her welcoming and generous spirit. She seemed to make friends everywhere she went. She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Dean of Roslindale and Nancy Ellen Holmes, of New Boston, NH. Her daughter Cynthia Radner of Catonsvile, MD predeceased her on March 12, 2023. She leaves grandsons Jonathan Flatley and Jason Flatley, granddaughters Casey Radner and Alayna Radner, and great- granddaughters Mataya Flatley and Agnes Flatley. She was sister of the late Sally Dean Logan of Bellingham, WA, and Priscilla Dean of Ocala, FL. She leaves many nephews, nieces, grand and great-grand nephews and nieces. Betty's funeral will be held at 11AM on Saturday November 11, 2023 at SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean St. (Rt1A) Lynn, followed by burial at Swampscott Cemetery. Rachel (Miller) Thompson, 83, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October28th at home in Swampscott. She was born in Erie, PA to the late John and Lucille (Hanson) Miller, she graduated from Penn State University Class of 1961. Rachel was known for her love of skiing, especially at Sugarloaf. Cooking, gardening, and scrapbooking were also activities she was fond of. She worked at Tannin Corporation with her husband Tommy for twenty-two years. She was very active in the ladies bible study group at the First Congregational Church of Hamilton. She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas W. Thompson of Swampscott; two sons, John V. Thompson and wife Sarah of Marblehead, Robert W. Thompson, and wife Jeanne of Oakland, ME; one brother, Emmett Hanson Miller and wife Mary of Rochester, NY; seven grandchildren, Charles, William, Samuel, Christopher, Matthew, Eleanor, and Andrew Thompson. Rachel is predeceased by her parents. Her funeral service will be at Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, on Wednesday, November 1, at 11am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A wonderful mother to the very lucky Nancy and Steve Walter of Swampscott and Estero, Florida, Betsy and Dan Rooks of Marblehead, Bob, and Jose Goldman of Lynn, and Jeff and Judi Goldman of Swampscott. Loving Nana to Joshua and Rebecca Rooks, Sam and Asher Goldman and Camila Paiva and Godric Laird, Danielle, Alexa and Jake Goldman, Melissa and Mark Richards, and Michael and Cindy Walter. Mother-in-law to Barbara Goldman. Daughter of the late Mary (Sherman) Lewin and Murray Rosenbaum. Sister-in-law to June Goldman and the late Carolyn Goldman, and beloved aunt to James Goldman, Michael Finn and the late Joan Finn, and Charles and Jody Goldman. Dear cousin of Frank Garelick, Jon Garelick, Inez Keller, and Steven Sherman. A dear friend of Bill Lazdowski. Maxine was a life-long learner, graduating from Brown University and obtaining a master's in education from Lesley College. Maxine found her passion as a teacher of reading to dyslexic students in Marblehead and Winthrop and as a trainer of reading teachers across the country for the Wilson Reading System. Her career with Wilson and sharing life with her family made her feel like the most fortunate person on Earth. Burial will be private. Joseph F. Marino, Jr. , age 82, a lifelong resident of Swampscott, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 20th, surrounded by his loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph F. Marino, Sr. and Wanda (Grenowich) Marino and his son, Joseph F. Marino III. Joe was a graduate of Swampscott High School, class of 1959. A landscape gardener, Joe was a 3rd generation owner of Marino's Landscaping. As a local business owner, he had strong ties to his community. He was also a member of the Swampscott Italian Club and the Sons of Italy. He enjoyed playing cards and was a competitive poker player for several years. He loved golfing, skiing, snowmobiling and traveling. He enjoyed a good meal and loved to watch Westerns and always had a great story to tell. His greatest joy came from the time spent with his family and friends. Joe was the former husband of Joyce "Toni" (DeVito) Hicks and Janet Hammonds, and the longtime partner of Christine Montemarano. He is also survived by his children; Tammy Kelly and her husband Gene Kelly, Sr. , Deana Wyse, Scott Marino and his late longtime partner Denise Rondinelli, Dawn Spratt and her husband Bill; his step-son, Eric Langley; his grandchildren; Gene, Jr. , Nicholas, Alyssa, Conor, Jeremy, Allison, Amy, Andrew, Gianna, Eric and Elizabeth; as well as six great-grandchildren; his brother, Paul Rhuda and his wife Pinky; and his constant companion, his dog Lady.
