Marc Melen

Marc Melen

Age - 68

December 1, 2023

Marc D. MelenRutland-Marc D. Melen passed away suddenly Saturday evening, November 25th, 2023, after a long period of being unwell. Marc David Melen was born in Rutland on St. Patrick's Day, 1955, the second of four (4) sons born to Bernard Godfrey Melen and Dorcas Peck Melen. A lifelong Rutland resident, Marc attended Southeast School, Immaculate Heart of Mary School, and graduated from Rutland High School. After graduation, like many Rutland residents of the time, Marc went to work for the Howe Scale Company. When that closed, Marc was subsequently employed by Tambrands, Mal Tool, and a number of machine shops, finally finishing his machinist's career at MetroMail in Rutland Town. As a second career, Marc became well-known as a bartender around Rutland, working at some point for almost all the bars which comprised Rutland's nightlife. Then, as Marc became older and quieter, his last career was working for a number of convenience stores around Rutland, finally retiring from Circle K on Woodstock Avenue where he was a recognized face. Marc was a lifelong sports fan, never finding a sport he wouldn't participate in, or at least watch. Though literally the smallest in his family while growing up, Marc played varsity baseball, football, and basketball for his school teams from elementary through High School. Weekends would see his parents driving Marc to wherever the Rutland High School teams were playing, with his father and mother on the stands to cheer Marc and the team on! When not participating in the school teams, Marc would participate in intramural sports, league bowling at the Bowlerama, or at home, or one of his friends' homes, watching professional sports. Marc was a diehard fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants, he and his friends were known for driving down to the Boston area for several days at a time during the summer to attend home games at Fenway. Marc literally knew every professional player and would happily not only identify each player by name, but could share the players' statistics, strengths, and weaknesses with anyone who would listen, which often resulted in lively discussions with family, friends, and customers of his bartending. Marc is survived by his older brother Laurence (Larry), of Quechee, his younger brother, Scott, of Waitsfield, nephew Matthew Melen and his wife, Anna, and his three (3) grandnephews Mason, Lukas, and Kaleb, and numerous Peck and Melen cousins. Marc is also survived by his lifelong friends Christopher and Theresa O'Connor, participating in their wedding ceremony and standing as godparent to their son and daughter, and manager and friend Betsy Anderson, who along with numerous friends dating back to school days were Marc's extended family while he was living alone in Rutland. Marc was predeceased by both his parents and his youngest brother, Donn, of Rutland. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, December 5th, from 4:00 P. M to 6:00 P. M. at Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland, with burial at 11:00 A. M. , December 6th, in the second family lot in St Joseph's Cemetery of Rutland.
