Berdine H. See, 87, of Independence, IA, died on September 2, 2023, at Lexington Estates in Independence, IA. Berdine was the daughter of Ubbe and Jennie (Janssen) Toomsen of Geneva, Iowa. She was born in 1935, the 11th of 13 children on the Toomsen family farm, currently listed as an Iowa Century Farm. Berdine was educated in Geneva's Sunnyside Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Ackley High School in 1955. On June 1, 1955, Berdine met Raymond See at the apartment building they lived at in Des Moines. He struck up a conversation and asked if she wanted to take a tour of the area together since they were both new to town. They were married four short months later on October 7, 1955, in Ackley, IA. They made their home near Ackley and began farming. Following this, they lived throughout central/eastern Iowa in various farming roles. They raised cattle, operated a hog confinement, and harvested the land. In 1971, they purchased a mobile home park just east of Independence. They operated the park together for 31 years until closing it in 2003. While being a farmer's wife and business owner, Berdine raised three children and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence. She taught Sunday school and was part of United Women in Faith, formerly known as United Methodist Women (UMW). Her strong faith carried her through breast cancer treatment that blessed her as a 22-year breast cancer survivor. In their spare time, Berdine and Ray spent time traveling, boating, camping, and spending time at Holiday Lake near Brooklyn, IA. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, canning, collecting bells, thimbles, Avon, and like items, writing letters, and mailing cards to loved ones for special days. Berdine was known as kind, loving, and selfless, and her true joy was being with and keeping in touch with family and friends. Berdine was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond See; daughter, Janell Greenfield; granddaughter, Amy Knutson; parents; brothers Clarence Toomsen, John Toomsen, Delbert Toomsen, Melvin Toomsen, and Norman Toomsen; sisters Grace Roske, Elizabeth Spieker, Johanna Daniels, Henrietta Miller, Florence Schultz, and Christine Schurman. Berdine will be deeply missed by her children: Rick See, of Independence, IA; Randy See (Angela Buskohl) of Rowley, IA; and Brenda (Curt) Balvanz, of Cedar Falls, IA; grandchildren: Andrea (Aaron) Bruns, Ryan (Christina) See, Nathan (Kristi) See, Madison and Carter Balvanz; and great-grandchildren, Abigail, Madalyn, Alexis, Noah, Jackson, and McKinzie; sister Marian Witte of Cedar Falls, IA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Toomsen, Janssen, and See families. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM, on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Reiff Family Center - Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA with Rev. Bret Trasamar officiating. A visitation will be held an hour before the service on Saturday at 9 AM. A burial will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, north of Ackley, IA, at 12:30/1:00 pm also on Saturday, September 23, 2023, and a luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley.

Kevin E. Jensen, 66, of Independence, Iowa died Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa. Kevin was born on December 11, 1957, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Everette and Mary (Brousseau) Jones. He moved with his family to Hawaii where he attended high school. Upon returning to the Independence area, he married Melissa Murphy and raised three children: Jeremy, Miranda, and Josiah. The couple later divorced. He was employed as a maintenance man with St. John's Catholic School for over 30 years prior to his retirement. He had a passion for music, enjoyed fishing and was an accomplished artist. He is survived by his significant other, Nancy Alessio, of Independence, Iowa; his three children: Jeremy (Heather) Crawford, Brooklyn, Iowa; Miranda McDonough and Josiah (Katie) Jensen all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; seven grandchildren, his father Everette (Barb) Jones of Missouri; his siblings Randy Jensen, Waterloo, Iowa; sister Pamela McManama (Indiana); and Dennis (Kelly) Jensen, Waterloo, Iowa; as well several nieces and nephews. Online obituary at www. jamisonschmitzfuneralhome. com Gary Francis Whittenbaugh was born August 7, 1935, in Wadena, Iowa, the son of Francis William & Martha Ann (Felder) Whittenbaugh. He moved to Oelwein with his family and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1953. Gary soon after joined the U. S. Army and was stationed in New York City, working in the early stages of video recording for the Army. He worked with heavy and cumbersome equipment, nothing like we have today, recording troop movements for the Pentagon. After his military service, Gary went into partnership with Merle McFarlane. In 1957 they started an appliance sales and service store that they named, Service Center. Over the years, Gary worked there with Merle and his two brothers, Bill and Tom, until Gary retired in 1992. Gary and Tom created their garden, FranMara, at their home in the 1990's. Gary was gifted with plants and Tom was in charge of the hardscape. Together they created a world-class garden that was visited by thousands of people. The garden has been featured in magazines and television programs. Gary was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, enjoyed walleye fishing on the Mississippi and mushroom hunting. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was an Iowa State Master Gardner and was president of the American Conifer Society Central Region for several years. - Lillian Louise Greiner, 94, of Independence, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on November 15, 2023. Funeral services will be 10:30 a. m. - Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at St. John Catholic Church, Independence. Burial will immediately follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Visitation will begin with the recitation of the Rosary at 2:30 p. m. - Monday, November 20, 2023, at White Funeral Home, Independence, where public visitation will continue from 3:00 p. m. - 7:00 p. m. , with a parish vigil service at 6:30 p. m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services, Tuesday, at the church. Lillian was born October 1, 1929, in New Vienna, Iowa, the second of ten children born to Herman and Marie (Foxen) Schwers. Upon graduating eighth grade she continued working on the home farm and for others in the farming community. Lillian married Elmer Greiner on October 4, 1949, and together they raised eight children. They initially farmed near Luxemburg and eventually moved to Independence where Lillian worked for Corn Blossom Foods and later as a psychiatric aide and supervisor at the Mental Health Institute for 16 years. Elmer was killed as a result of the KCRG tower collapse in 1973. After his death, Lillian moved to Harpers Ferry where she owned and operated the Harpers Valley Supper Club (aka "Lil's") for eight years. She very much enjoyed interacting with customers as well as spending time fishing on the Mississippi. She returned to Independence and to her home parish of St. John Catholic Church in 1989. In the subsequent years, Lillian was an active member of the Rosary Society, serving as president for 25 years, and was engaged in numerous improvement projects and events in and around the church. She was also manager of VFW Post #2440 for 13 years, officially and finally retiring at the age of 85. Lillian continually gave of her time and talents. She was famous for her roast beef dinners, having served them at innumerable events around Independence. She was a regular blood donor to the American Red Cross. She spent countless hours creating beautiful quilts with the Sew-n-Sews church quilting club. In her idle time, of which there was little, Lillian enjoyed fishing, playing solitaire, yard work, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. Survivors include her children Janice Hatt, La Crosse, WI; Fred (Laurie), Boone; Jim (Rosie), Henrico, NC; Dave (Sue), Panora; Steve (Diana), Mosinee, WI; LuAnn (Leslie Linser), Madison, WI; and Ellen Manning (Chris Hansen), Caledonia, MN; eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Germaine Theisen, Eileen Hellmann, Caroline Nachtman, and Betty (Hal) Schulze; and brothers Elmer Schwers, Chuck (Donna) Schwers, and Jim Schwers. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer, daughter Judith (at birth), son Mark; brothers Lawrence and Merle, and son-in-law Vincent Hatt. Robert Alan Johnson was born November 12, 1953, in Independence, IA, the son of Robert Lewis "Bob" Johnson and Elaine Marie (Reagan) Johnson. He was raised in Quasqueton, IA, and graduated from East Buchanan High School in Winthrop, IA, with the class of 1972. On October 14, 1989, he was united in marriage to Shelly Jo Rasmussen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, IA. They made their home in Independence. Alan worked as a fabricator in the research and development division of several companies for 30 years and owned and operated Johnson Contracting for about 12 years. Most recently, he was the maintenance supervisor for NorthCrest Assisted Living in Waterloo, IA. Alan had the great talent of being able to build and fix ANYTHING. He built and raced motocross bikes and stock cars for many years, and he enjoyed racing go-karts with his sons. Alan liked riding his Harley and he loved Blues music. He would play the guitar and sing, often looking for the best place to sing karaoke. He also refurbished guitars and grew his collection over the years. He and Shelly enjoyed playing pool together, often looking forward to pool league night. Alan and Shelly are members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Alan is survived by his wife of 34 years, Shelly Johnson of Independence, IA; two sons, Blake Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, Cole Johnson of Independence, IA; his mother, Elaine (Fredrick) Franck of Cedar Rapids, IA; two brothers, Rick (Leslie) Johnson of Independence, IA, Aaron (Karol) Franck of Anamosa, IA; nephews Adam (Stacey) Johnson and their children, Natalie and Kendall of Independence, IA, Sean (Jill) Johnson, and their children, Danika, Skarlett, and Jr. of Independence, IA. Deana L. Miller, 52, of Independence, IA, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at her home following a long battle with cancer. Deana was born on October 17, 1971, in Independence, IA, the daughter of Robert and LaQuetta (Morris) Weber. She grew up in Independence, IA, and was a 1990 graduate of Independence High School. In 1991, she met Wade A. Miller through her parents, and after five months they were married. They said the vows on October 17, 1991, in Seaside, OR. They made their home together in Independence, and Deana started a Daycare in their home. In 2005, Deana started working as an Associate Teacher in Special Education at East Elementary and later as a Behavioral Interventionist at the West Elementary in Independence. She loved children and took care of many children over the years. She always tried her best to remember the names of all the kids at the school and enjoyed making a difference in their lives and connecting with them. She is survived by her husband, Wade Miller, her children; Katelynn (John Hickey) Miller, Nicholas Miller, Zachary (Hailie Nemec) Miller, and Jaxon Miller, all of Independence, IA, her grandchildren; Johnny Hickey, Alyssa Hickey, and Julian Miller, her sisters, Chris Wubben, Independence, IA, and Cathy Anderson, Posse, WA, her nieces and nephews, Sam Stelter, Jared Wubben, Erica Wubben, and many others. Richard N. Woods, 71, of Independence, IA, passed away at his home on Friday, November 3, 2023. Richard was born on March 21, 1952, in Torrance, California, the son of Richard H. and Cynthia (Harvey) Woods. He was a 1970 graduate of Aviation High School and went on to attend the El Camino Jr. College in Torrence, CA. Richard moved to Iowa in June of 1974 and met the love of his life, Jean. They were married on March 21, 1975, and made their home on the Gallup family farm near Littleton, IA. There he helped farm for many years. They later purchased an acreage between Independence, and Quasqueton, IA. Richard developed a passion for Falconry as a teenager in California. He spent many years learning every aspect of the discipline, which became a lifestyle for Richard. He spent countless hours making hoods, braces, and game bags, not just for himself but for other falconers. He reached the qualification of Master Falconer and cared for many raptors throughout his years. Richard's favorite times with his birds were seeing the results of hours of training and the trust built with a bird during a hunt. When Richard wasn't with his birds he enjoyed working on trucks and motorcycles. He rode many RAGBRAI with Jean throughout the years. His family was just as important to him as the birds. He was always there when any of his kids needed him. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He taught them to fish and made many memories around bonfires and with fireworks. He was always willing to lend a helping hand during the farming season and worked many seasons on the Bagge and Copenhaver Farms. He is survived by his wife, Jean Woods, Independence, IA, his children, Richard A. (Shelia) Woods, Independence, IA, Robin J. Woods, Independence, IA, Rebecca (Brandon) Livingood, Scottsdale, AZ, Abraham (Annemarie) Woods, Cedar Falls, IA, and Kip (Amanda Korth-Woods) Woods, Nevada, IA, eight grandchildren; Rachel, Caleb, Trent, Tristan, Cannon, Harper, Cejay, and Finley, two sisters, Antionette "Toni" Woods, Gardena, CA, and Victoria "Suzi" (Jerry) Gieseke, Minburn, IA, and several nieces and nephews. Catherine Barbara Jane Schnepf was born January 19, 1931, in rural Linn County, the third of nine, and the oldest daughter, to Conrad Schnepf and Sylvia Horak Schnepf. Catherine grew up west of Brandon and was a 1949 Brandon High School graduate. June 19,1949 Catherine and Carl Rouse were married in Brandon to this marriage four children were born Deanna, Terry, Charlene, and Wendy. Cathy was an active member in the VFW Auxiliary Post 2440 holding many officer positions at the local and state level. She enjoyed coffee with friends, fishing, crocheting, and dancing on Saturday nights and the babies. Cathy passed away November 6, 2023, at ABCM Rehabilitation Center - West Campus in Independence, IA at the age of 92 with family by her side. She is survived by her children, Deanna Abernathey (special friend Duane Donely), Brandon, IA, Terry (Connie) Rouse, Silver Lake, IN, Char (Wayne) Swarts, Independence, IA, and Wendy (Richard) Sperfslage, Winthrop, IA, two step-sons, Ken and Russ Weston and their families, her grandchildren, Carmen (David) Sloan, Carrie (Curt) Bantz, Dan (Lori) Rouse, Cheri Rouse, Caryn Rouse, Jay (Tina) Harting, Cressant Swarts, Adam (Jessica) Swarts, Andy (Julia) Sperfslage, Brad (Nicole) Sperfslage, Craig (Spencer) Sperfslage, her great-grandchildren; Iain and J. Cathy is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Rouse, Son-in-law, Gene Abernathey, mother Sylvia Elliott, four brothers, Bruce, Jesse, Verilius, and Bernard, three sisters, Hilda Sauer, Marilyn Rouse, and Virginia Schnepf, her second husband, Roy Miller, and her third husband, Raymond Weston. The family would like to thank the CNA's, Dietary staff, and Nurses for providing excellent care in a family-like atmosphere at ABCM Rehabilitation Center in Independence during Mom's past six years, Cedar Valley Hospice, and the Reiff Family Center for their care.
