K. Joseph (Joe) Hullinger, age 66, of Hoagland, IN passed away February 27, 2024, in Fort Wayne, IN. Son of the late Kenneth Hullinger and is survived by his mom, Charlotte Hullinger. Joseph graduated from Indiana University and pursued a career in criminal justice. After 28 years as an officer and detective, he retired from the Fort Wayne Police Department. He was active in the Hoagland Youth Baseball League as a coach for several years. Joseph is survived by his sons, Jeremy (Lisa Smitley) Hullinger and Colt Hullinger; grandchildren, Amelia, Henry, and Wyatt; siblings, Daniel (Robin) Hullinger and Kari (Michael Peters) Hullinger; and nephews, Isaac Hullinger and Benjamin Peters. Service is 12:00 pm, Friday, March 15, 2024, at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St. with calling two hours prior beginning at 10:00 am. Mary Helen Helmkamp, 69, of Fort Wayne, died Wednesday February 28, 2024, at Parkview Randallia Hospital. Mary was born in Fort Wayne on April 10, 1954, the daughter of (the late) James Donald Isbell and Helen (Nolan) Isbell Rubrecht. Mary graduated from Central Catholic with the Class of ’72 and on June 30, 1973, she married Ronald Helmkamp, who survives along with their children, Trisha (Matt) Michaels and Laura (George) Ijames; grandchildren, Samuel, Allyson and Luke Michaels, and Easton, Adelynn and Ayla Ijames; her sisters, Patricia (John) Diemer, Donna (Lindy) Screeton and Karen Isbell; her brother Michael (Barb) Isbell; brothers & sisters-in-law, Dave & Pat Helmkamp, Diane Farrell, John & Cindy Helmkamp, Joe & Brenda Helmkamp and several nieces & nephews. In addition to her mother and father, Mary was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Frank Rubrecht, mother & father-in-law, Helen & Norbert Helmkamp, and brother-in-law, Tom Helmkamp. Mary worked at Lincoln Life and later retired from Fort Wayne Community Schools as Secretary-Treasurer. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, and she was a volunteer at Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center. Mary was athletic and a sports enthusiast; she enjoyed pickleball, basketball and volleyball, and had formerly coached volleyball at St. Charles, but her greatest joy in life were her family & friends, she liked baking for them, enjoying her grandchildren and spending time at Crooked Lake. The Mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30am on Wednesday March 6, 2024, in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Rd. with visitation from 9:30-10:30am in the church. Visitation is also on Tuesday from 4-8pm at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave. with a Vigil Service at 4:30pm. The family would like to acknowledge her dear friend Kathie Dawes for her unwavering friendship over the years since college and taking on the roll & giving Terri exceptional and loving care during her illness. Preceded in death by father, Donald Wilburn. Terri graduated in 1976 from Greenfield Central High School. She then attended Indiana Weselyn University (Marion College) and graduated in 1980 where she earned her Bachelors of Science in K-12 Physical Education/Health. In college, she excelled as a 3 sport athlete in field hockey, basketball, and track. She received an award specifically named after her for her tremendous offensive play in field hockey. The "Willy Award" was given to a player each year thereafter. Terri spent years as an IHSAA referee. She then went on to become an umpire for traveling softball associations. Then became State Umpire in Chief for the NSA/USFA softball organizations. She made many friends along the way. Terri retired from the City of Wabash after 30 years of service. She moved to Arizona where she taught Physical Education/Health full time. She was a member of the Greenfield VFW. Terri enjoyed spending time with her family, staying busy, being outside, doing yardwork, even working on the farm in her younger years. Miguel Mendez, 92, passed away on February 27, 2024. He was born in Marion, IN on September 9, 1931, a son of the late Jose and Andrea Mendez. Miguel served in the U.S. Army and retired in 1953. During his time served he was awarded the Korean Service Medal , United Nations Service Medal, and Purple Heart Medal. His main occupation was a truck driver in the infantry unit. Miguel went on to retire from Fort Wayne Community Schools as a maintenance man after over 20 years of service. He was married to Jessie Mendez, who passed in 2011, together they shared five children. Surviving are his children, Dawn Mendez, Melissa (Brice) Lawrence, Twila (Lee Chapman) Daniels, and DeWayne (Stephanie) Mendez; grandchildren, Kristy (Brent) Watson, Mickey (Bradley) Volney, Joshua (Brittany Evans) Mendez, Nacayla Price, Hailea Price, Britney (Ethan) Reckers, Donte Mendez, Antonia Mendez, Madalynn Mendez, Breanna Mendez and Chelsea Mendez Bryson Daniels, Amber (Ryan) Steffanides; great-grandchildren, Tate Watson, Nora Volney, Alexis Mendez, Connor Saylor, Kaiden, August, and McKinley Price, Zane and Owen Price, Kole and Emmitt Reckers, Raygan, Morgon, and Meeah Daniels and Mackenzie and Delilah Steffanides. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mendez; son, Michael Mendez; and grandson, Ryan Stinson. A lifetime resident of Fort Wayne, she worked for Anthony Wayne Services for several years. She was a very kind and caring person who would try and make friends with everyone she met. Nona is survived by four brothers, Robert L. Downey Jr., Randy T. Downey, David J. Downey and Byron L. (wife Bonnie) Downey; three sisters, Inez M. Lowe, Bonnie J. Downey and Rhonda S. Raza and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Connie worked as a public school teacher, teacher's aide, and most recently as a library clerk. She also served alongside her husband as a pastor's wife. Connie was a member of several Baptist Churches currently attending Calvary Baptist of Fort Wayne and in her free time she enjoyed scrapbooking and playing piano. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Walter Gerstung of Fort Wayne; daughters, Bethanne (Joseph) Keller of Abilene, TX and Bonnie Gerstung of Fort Wayne; granddaughters, Katherine Fitch and Ellianna (Raphael) Forrer; great-grandson, Emmet; and sisters, Gwendolyn Long and Marilyn (Marlin) Habecker.
