Mrs. Bede Lou Evans, 64, of Eaker Road, Fort Plain, NY died on September 8, 2023, at Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown. She was born in Little Falls, NY on April 23, 1959, the daughter of Joseph and Isabel Clemons Hudson. She went on to graduate from Oppenheim-Ephratah High School, class of 1976. She had been a driver for many construction companies, then when that became too much, she moved on to being a medical transport driver here locally. She also had worked detailing cars and doing handywoman work at her sister's business B and D Motors. She lived most of her life in the local area, was of Christian faith and enjoyed being with her family more than anything. Her husband Jerry Max Reynolds and her parents predeceased her. Survivors include her daughter LeAnn Trumbull; Jeremy Reynolds; granddaughters, Destiny Sweet, Summer Trumbull, Angelina Mussmacher, and Faith Ryan; grandson Preston Trumbull; siblings Kimberly Patterson, Joseph Hudson, Brian Hudson, Cheryl Hudson, and Michael Harrington. As per her request services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The family is being served by Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY, 13317. Lee W. Sanders, Sr. , 88, of School Street, Nelliston, NY died under the care of hospice at his home with his family by his side. Lee was born in New York, on May 26, 1935, the son of Issac Sanders and Ida Moore Sanders. He attended Canajoharie High School, then at age 55 went and obtained his GED. He lived his entire life in the local area, and was self-employed his entire life as a well respected carpenter. He served in the US Army, with the rank of Sgt, 1st class, in the Truck division. Lee was a member of both the Grandview Baptist Church and the Amazing Grace Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby after he retired, although you could say he never fully retired, asking his daughter to make him a table to have his woodworking tools at while he was unable to be up and moving around. He was predeceased by both his wives, his first wife, Jean Nash Sanders, who he married on December 22, 1956, who passed away on June 16, 2013, and his second wife, Kathy Frasier, who he married on January 6, 2016, and passed away on Jan 16, 2022. He also was predeceased by his baby boy. Survivors include his six daughters; Sandra and Ron Frasier, Susan VanArsdal, Sylvia and BJ VanBuren, Sheila and LaVerne Borst, Diane Hodge and Joanne and Ted Grant; two sons, Lee W. Sanders, Jr. , and Edmund and Dawn Sanders; 23 grandchildren, 19 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday December 5th, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Fort Plain Cemetery. A procession will leave the family's home at 10:45 and make its way to the cemetery. A Celebration of Lee's life will be held also at the Grandview Baptist Church, on Saturday December 9th, 2023 at 10:30 AM. Walter George Ellsworth, 89 years of age, NYS Route 10, Palatine Bridge, joined his wife, Millie, in Heaven on November 25, 2023. He was born on September 22,1934, the eldest son of Floyd Nelson Ellsworth and Catherine Demarist Lawrence and grew up in Port Ewen, NY, graduating from Kingston High School. He attended Cornell University on a ROTC scholarship attaining a bachelor's degree in Dairy Management. Walter met his wife, Millicent Florence Hoffman, on a blind date while she was attending college at SUNY New Paltz. They were married on Sunday, June 14, 1959. They had celebrated their 55 anniversary shortly before Millie's passing in July 2014. Walter was a hard-working dairy farmer for most of his life. Starting as a herdsman in Honeoye Falls, moving to Gardiner, and then bringing his family to his own farm in Palatine Bridge in December 1965. He was active in Farm Bureau, Production Credit, and served on the board of several agricultural agencies and organizations. Later in life, Walter worked for DHIA testing for many farms in the area; driving school bus for Canajoharie Central School, field auditing for Central National Bank, retiring as a driver from Access Transportation in 2012. Walter is survived by his three children, Sue-Ann (David) Wheadon, Peter (Elaine) Ellsworth, and Thomas Ellsworth; grandchildren Vanessa Wheadon and Walter John Ellsworth; four sisters, Nancy Prince, Mary (Arthur) Libourel, Joan Mansell, and Sally (Graham) Brough; and many beloved nephews and nieces. Viewing hours will be at Houghtaling and Hanley Funeral Home in Canajoharie, NY on Wednesday, November29, 2023 from 10:00 a. m. to Noon, with a graveside service following at Canajoharie Falls Cemetery, Canajoharie. Dale Ross Fisher, 69, of State Highway 163, Fort Plain, NY died on November 15, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family following a battle with cancer. Dale was a graduate of Fort Plain High class of 1973. He was known as a jack of all trades, and was good at anything he did, keeping himself self-employed his entire life. He was a member of the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post #3275, a member of the Fort Plain American Legion, the Canajoharie Moose, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and being outdoors. He also loved being around his dogs, Holly, and Molly. On August 11, 2007, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain, he married Catherine Ellerby, who survives. He was predeceased in death by his parents, a sister Dara Fisher Horning, and a brother Drew Fisher. Survivors besides his wife include, his sons Jacob Fisher, (Alyssa Clemons), Shaun and his wife Jenna Fisher, and William Jones; brothers Dean Fisher, Darrin Fisher, and Devin Fisher; sisters Diana Slemp and Darcy Rudolph; grandchildren Alexis, Avery, Jaxson, Hailey, and Chase; step granddaughter Deanna Jones; great grandson Zayvien; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00am-12:00 on Tuesday November 21, 2023, at Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, Inc, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317, with a memorial service following at noon. Frederick W. Lee Jr. (April 20, 1935 - November 5, 2023) A local visionary and fixture of the Mohawk Valley area has passed. Frederick W. Lee Jr. was born in Middlefield, NY, on April 20, 1935 to Fred Lee Sr. and Elizabeth Morton Lee. Fred served in the United States Army after attending Oswego State Teaching College. He then met and married Carole A. Sturgess-Polulech Lee (1938-2004) on Nov. 22, 1958 at the United Methodist Church in Cooperstown. They would go on to have two children, Janet and Mark. Fred married Sylvia Crosby in March 2005, creating a large and loving blended family. He and Carole together founded Lee Newspapers Inc. in 1964 out of the company's current offices in Palatine Bridge. Fred would steer the company through tremendous growth - expanding across the decades from the original Mohawk Valley Pennysaver and the regional edition of Country Folks farm newspaper to a wide-ranging family of community newspapers and local resources, trade publications and trade show events that reached everyone from the local community to across the greater U. S. Lee Newspapers was far from his only business venture throughout the years. His entrepreneurial spirit started when he was a child, and he was involved with many other projects throughout the years. One of the most notable ventures was the 2017 purchase of the original Spraker Bank building in Canajoharie, NY, and the establishment of a Christmas shop which has evolved into Lee's Shops at Wagner Square, a local fixture and tourism draw. Fred's presence was strongly felt in the region, where he was an active figure his entire life. He loved the valley and the people he served, pouring his standards for excellence into the local papers and pennysaver. For many years, he enjoyed connecting with the public through his editor's notes in each issue within his column, Hello Again. Outside of being a publisher, he was a devoted deacon and trustee for many years at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ames, NY. He wore many hats throughout his lifetime: son, brother, uncle, husband, father, (great-) grandfather, deacon, trustee, board member, neighbor, church member, employer and entrepreneur. He will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Carole, his son Mark, his brother Alfred Wesley Lee and his sister Ruth Snyder. He is survived by his wife Sylvia Lee; daughter Janet Stanley and her husband Matt; grandson Travis Button and his husband Josh; granddaughter Brittany Play-Button and her husband Peter; granddaughter Lyndsay Pickel and her husband Dan; granddaughters Darcie Mabie and her husband Brian, and Kristen Lee and her fiance Mark; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Step children, Charles Crosby and his wife Sherrie, Casey Crosby and his wife Sonja, Pam Bishop, Joshua Crosby and his wife Becca, and Cara Soto and her husband Jose as well as numerous extended family grandchildren. Services will take place Friday, November 10 from 3 - 7 p. m. at Houghtaling and Smith, 20 Otsego St. , Canajoharie, NY; the funeral and burial will be on Saturday, November 11 at 10 a. m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Route 10, Ames NY. Thomas (Tom) Channell, 75, passed away unexpectedly on November 2, 2023, at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. Tom was most recently residing in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. He was born in Northampton Massachusetts on August 19, 1948. Tom was the son of the late Edmund and Elsie (Ginnette) Channell. Tom attended Northampton Central School, but moved with his parents to Gloversville where he graduated with the class of 1967. After high school, he studied at Fulton Montgomery Community College and worked for Rite Aid Pharmacy. Tom's 50 year career in the window and door industry began at Kasson and Keller in Fonda, NY and culminated with a thirty year tenure as the top regional sales manager for Chelsea Building Products (Pittsburgh, PA). Tom's knowledge, expertise and professionalism were known throughout the industry. On October 7th, 1972 Tom married Bonnie Van Alstine in Ft. Plain, NY. They spent the next 51 years raising two daughters, cherishing relationships with family and friends, traveling the world, enjoying 17 years at their camp on Sacandaga Lake and never missing an opening day at Saratoga Race Track. Tom lived most of his life in the Fonda-Fultonville area where he was a member of the Johnstown Moose Lodge #1185 and the Concordia Club; a charter member of the Fonda-Fultonville Lions Club; a Mason of the Hamilton Lodge No. 79 (Ft. Plain, NY) in which he rose to the level of a Shriner. Tom loved fishing, enjoyed golf, was an avid Mets & Jets fan, and always looked forward to the annual Black Friday poker game with his family and friends. Tom is survived by his daughters Stacy (Grant) Wilder of Lansing, NY and their children Caleb Thomas and Abby Grace; Kari Channell of England, UK and her daughter Kindra Elsie. Additionally, Tom is survived by his siblings: Floyd (Bob) Channell of Sammonsville, NY; Donna Caron of Florence, MA; Linda (Ronald) Punska of Hatfield, MA and Scott (Tracy) Channell of Hatfield, MA. Numerous nieces and nephews will fondly remember Uncle Tom. In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by his sister Karen Soucy and sister in-law Laura Gaida Channell. At Tom's request, there will be no formal services. There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Mr. James William Akers, (aka Jim Akers), 70, of Otsego Street, Canajoharie NY passed away October 28, 2023 having been a resident of the Palatine Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center since August 3, 2023. Born in Frederick, Wisconsin on May 18, 1953, the son of John Churchman Akers and Marjorie Gore Akers, who predeceased him. He graduated from Canajoharie Central High School in June 1971, where he was a member of the Safety Squad, Ski Club, and Targeteers. James was active in Track and Field his junior year, and was VP of the Targeteers his senior year. He went on to attend SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill, NY and Unity College, aka Unity Environmental University, in Unity Maine. James was a member of "Christians for Mountains" in Dunmore, W. Virginia; Curtis Cornerstone Chapel in Curtis Corners, NY: Caroga Fish and Game Club in the Town of Caroga, Fulton Co, NY,:Canada Lake Ski Club; Canada Lake Sailing Club Canada Lake; Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, NY, Schoharie County Historical Society, Schoharie, NY; New York State Muzzle-Loaders Association Inc. ; Boy Scouts of America, and the United Methodist Church. Jim won first prize for a painting at the Montgomery Co. Fair, Fonda, NY during his Junior year in highschool and won a sailing trophy from the Canada Lake Sailing Clubin the 1960's. Jim was well known for giving rides and food to people when they needed assistance. He was an active backpacker in the Adirondacks and knowledgeable in Zoology, Agriculture, Anthropology and Ornithology. He also spent some time collecting antique bottles. He is survived by his brother John Michael Akers, and several cousins. James faced death courageously and peacefully and his cremated remains will be interned at the family plot at Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.Show more
