Glenn Newlin Esser of O'Fallon, MO passed away on January 22, 2024 at the age of 89. He is survived by his three children, sons William "Will" (Nancy) Esser of Venice, FL, Brian (Becky) Esser of Jessup, MD, and daughter Cheryl (Terry) Nanney of Lake Saint Louis, MO, and two grandchildren, Brittany Nanney (Jeff Horn) and Kyle Nanney. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Barbara (Fairchild) Esser, his parents, Bernard and Lillian Newlin Esser, and his siblings, William Esser, Frank Esser, Lucille Johnson and Maryann Tieszen. Glenn was born on June 23, 1934 in Adrian, MN. Growing up, his family spent time in Indiana and Lakeland, FL before settling in Washington, DC where he spent his teenage years. One of his favorite stories about growing up in DC was when he and his older brothers delivered 900 newspapers every day. Many times, his mother would wake them up by placing a cold washcloth on their faces! Glenn entered the US Navy after high school, where he trained as a Boiler Technician. It was while he was stationed at Bainbridge, MD Naval Base Boiler Technician school that he met the love of his life, Barbara Fairchild. They were married in Baltimore in January, 1955. Barbara passed away in March, 2021. Following his graduation from Boiler school and soon after his marriage to Barbara, he was stationed aboard the USS Fort Mandan in Norfolk, VA. It was while the ship was deployed to the North Atlantic that Barbara gave birth to their first child. Glenn was honorably discharged from the US Navy in 1956. He was very proud of his Naval service. After leaving the service, already with a family, he began working briefly for the Sinclair Oil Company. In the late 1950's he started a long and successful career the vending industry, working his way up from filling candy machines to maintenance and finally as a Regional Service Manager in the southeast. During his career, his employers included Kwik Kafe, Automated Retailers of America (ARA), and National Vendors (Crane). During their lifetime, the Esser family lived in Riverview, MD (1957). The family was raised in Dorsey, MD (1963) in Anne Arundel County. He then moved to Lake Saint Louis, MO (1980) and finally moved to Florida in 1986 where he retired in 1999. A significant part of the family's life experiences was having the Shaw family as their neighbors in Riverview as well as in Dorsey, MD.They were great friends to Glenn and Barbara, and all the kids grew up together. Glenn was a longtime member of the American Legion, and active and longtime member of the Waterloo, MD chapter of the Lion's club, serving in many leadership roles, including chapter president. After retirement, Glenn became quite a stained glass craftsman and artist. He and Barbara played some golf and did some traveling. They especially enjoyed traveling with Barbara's sister Carol. He had a keen sense of humor, and never met a stranger. He was always friendly to everyone, from the grocery store cashier to the doctors and nurses treating him in his final weeks. Glenn loved his family dearly and will be missed by numerous family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society are appreciated.
