She worked for many years with Crawford Motor Company as clerk in the parts department and later retired from Jordan Lumber Company's Anson Wood Yard in the scale house.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Wade Holmes "Sonny" Howard and Richard Thomas "Bubba" Howard.She was an avid UNC Tarheel Basketball Fan and a Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Fan. It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow where words cannot express the sadness that comes with the passing of our dedicated father, grandfather, and friend: Robert William (Bill) Craig. Born August 19, 1951 Bill proudly served our country by joining the Air Force at the young age of 19 while moving on to become an inspiration to his children and a kind grandfather who would bring a smile to everyone’s face with his humor and generosity. He was passionate about the businesses he created and he loved watching the Carolina Panthers take the field on Sunday. While we lost our father, grandfather, and friend, many have lost the person they could count on most when they needed help or needed someone to brighten up their day. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary F. Craig; parents, Walter and Sadie Craig; sister, Faithie Willard; and brother, JD Craig. He is survived by his children, Michelle Coker (Brian), Dana Degurse, Jonathan Craig, and Jason Jones (Joy); grandchildren, Maddison Deerman, Austin Seymour, Amber Seymour, Carson Seymour, Gage Coker, Brodie Coker, Hana Jones, Uriah Jones, and Alivia Helms; two great-grandchildren; Merrick Deerman and Caroline Willoughby; sister, Pat Mitchell; brothers, Richard Craig and Jr. Craig; and fiance, Pam Little. Please join us in remembering him at Corinth Baptist Church, located at 3805 Corinth Church Road, Monroe, NC 28112, on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Reverend Doctor Gene Ray Swinson

"Reverend Doctor Gene Ray Swinson, son of the late Rev. Aaron Junior Swinson and Ruth Shepherd Swinson, was born on December 2, 1934, in Thomasville, NC. He went to his heavenly home February 26, 2024, at McWhorter Hospice House of Union County in Monroe, NC. In his early years, Gene attended schools in North Carolina and Virginia before entering the US Navy where he served during the Korean Conflict on the ammunition ship USS Vesuvius AE-15. He married the love of his life, Vergie Denton, in 1956 and went on to share 67 years together in love, marriage, and ministry. His numerous degrees included an Associate of Arts from Gardner Webb College, a Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana College, and a Masters of Theology and Doctorate of Ministry from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Gene loved the Lord Jesus supremely and was always eager to share his faith with others. He first answered God’s call and surrendered his life to ministry in 1958. Over the years, he served faithfully in ten churches including Southside Baptist in Savannah, GA, Graceway Church in Augusta, GA, and Harvest/Lifepoint Church in Monroe, NC along with other churches in Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina. Once he retired, he and Vergie became members of First Baptist Church of Indian Trail. Gene served on the Southern Baptist Convention Sunday School Board for eight years. He also served as First Vice President of the Georgia Baptist Convention and was a former Trustee on the Board of Gardner Webb College. He was involved with many local associations and state conventions within the Southern Baptist Convention. Gene adored his family with all his heart and loved every minute he spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grands. Being their Papa was one of his greatest joys. Gene was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves, and most sports in general. He was pleased to have gotten to play on the Masters Golf Course two times while living in Augusta. He and Vergie enjoyed traveling to many places in the US and abroad, especially their visits to Hawaii, Alaska, and the Holy Land twice. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a brother Jerry Swinson, niece Beverly Chester, nephew John Aaron Swinson, and other extended family. He is survived by his wife Vergie, children Michael Ray Swinson (Tracy), Hilton Head, SC and Lori Swinson Scott (Michael), Anchorage, AK. His grandchildren Tiffany Swinson Rice (Justin), Bluffton, SC, Holly Swinson Taylor (Allen), Chapin, SC, Gregory Michael Swinson (Nicole), Greenville, SC, Zachary Michael Scott, Anchorage, AK, and Coral Jean Groves, Raynham, MA. Great-grandchildren Adalyn Rice, Sadie Rice, Rivers Taylor, Presley Rice, Brooks Taylor, Emma Swinson, Mason Swinson, and Baby Girl Taylor due in April. Sister-in-law Jeannine Morris (Walter), Sophia, NC. Brother-in-law Rev. LeeRoy Denton, Weaverville, NC and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Gene’s Celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church Indian Trail, 732 Indian Trail Fairview Road, Indian Trail, NC. Visitation with family will be held at 10:00 AM. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Indian Trail, North Carolina, or Samaritan’s Purse."

"Carole Annette Nerney, 86, passed away peacefully February 24, 2024. Carole was born August 6, 1937, in Kingsport, Tennessee to parents John J. Wolfe and Grace Estelle Nelson Wolfe. She was of the Christian faith and a member of Living Way Church of Monroe, NC. Carole loved to go to the movies, play cards and read books. She was an avid bowler and won many medals. Carole was a member of the Fitzgerald Senior Center where she enjoyed playing Canasta. She was always a joy to be around and always made you smile. Surviving Carole are sons John and Scott Girten (Dee Dee), grandchildren Christine and Scott R. Girten. sisters; Doris Ford and Judy Overcash, brother; John Wolfe. Also surviving is special friend Mario. Carole was preceded in death in 2014 by her husband of 35 years, John “Jack” Nerney. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Hope Carter. A service to celebrate the life of Carole Annette Nerney will be held Wednesday, February 28th in the Weddington Chapel. Officiating the service will be Pastor Bill Graafsma of Living Way Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service."

Brent Edmond Mullis (66) of Monroe, died at home on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Brent was born on November 16, 1957, in Charlotte, NC, the oldest child of Ralph Wilson Mullis and Virginia Dare Smith Mullis. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathy Lynn Grimes Mullis, and his three dear and beloved children, Elijah Wilson Mullis of Seattle, Washington; Shelby Elizabeth Mullis Moretz (W.J.) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Allison LeAnne Mullis of Monroe, and one grandson, James Wilson Moretz all of whom he was so proud and loved so fiercely. He is also survived by one sister, Elizabeth (Beth) D. Mullis of Monroe, and three aunts; Doris S. Preslar of Monroe, Vivian S. Price of Concord, and Hazel Smith of Fort Mill, South Carolina, along with numerous cousins, including Vic Thomas and J.B. Preslar both of Monroe, the three of them had grown up together and were like brothers all their lives.Brent was a master craftsman as a gunsmith. His work had been published in the “American Hand Gunner” magazine and was sought out by many serious hunters and shooters of national repute, as well as local hunting and shooting enthusiasts. He was also a past 1000-yard National Bench Rest Shooting Champion from 1997 to 1998. He was a 1976 graduate of Piedmont High School in Monroe and attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Most recently, Brent had dealt with some very intense medical issues and had fought the good fight against multiple myeloma for several years, with great dignity and success. He seldom complained, just listened to his doctors, and kept a good attitude about his circumstances, which served him well in his battle. He was able to survive his condition for nearly four years, which gave him time to meet his grandson, James, who was truly the apple of his eye. Those who know Brent well know that he was fiercely intelligent and very well-read on subjects that interested him. He was full of energy and was always either wide open or fast asleep - there was no middle speed for him!Brent was the sort of fellow who never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him and by all those whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Mill Creek Baptist Church, 5417 Morgan Mill Rd, Unionville, NC 28110. The family will receive friends and family following the service.
