Barbara Elizabeth (Pittman) Steinkamp, an 89-year-old Pitkin resident, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Opelousas, where she had been residing for the past several years. Mrs. Steinkamp was born June 17, 1934, in Pitkin, the daughter of Hubert Dunn and Essie Ellen Green Pittman. She grew up in Pitkin, graduating as the valedictorian of the Pitkin High School Class of 1952. She attended Louisiana College in Pineville, where she was an art major. She was married to Ronald Gene Woods in 1953, and they were later divorced. She later married William Charles Steinkamp in 1972, and while they were later divorced, they reconnected more than 20 years later and were married on June 10, 2005. They enjoyed many happy years together until his death on July 14, 2013. Mrs. Steinkamp was a very intelligent and curious person who loved to read and learn about nearly everything. She was a wonderful conversationalist and made many good friends over the years in every community in which she lived. Her career choices allowed her to show her care and concern for others, including serving as the activities director and assistant administrator at Madison Manor Nursing Home in Madison, KS. After moving back to her hometown of Pitkin in 1983, she worked as a medical clerk at Fort Polk until her retirement. There was nothing more important to Mrs. Steinkamp than her faith, and everyone who encountered her was aware of it. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pitkin, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, as well as being involved in WMU and Vacation Bible School. She loved to tell the story of celebrating her 80th birthday at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, where she was serving on a mission trip. She served on the board of the Blue Branch Cemetery Association for many years and has been a volunteer EMT in Madison and Pitkin. Always creative, Mrs. Steinkamp had a lifelong dream realized when her children's book, "Little Blue Angel," was published in 2018. Mrs. Steinkamp is survived by four daughters, Brenda Adams of Sunset, LA, Ellen (Rick) Beeny of Mount Vernon, Missouri, Ronda (John) Lickteig of Trenton, Missouri, and Judith Pittman (David Burns) of Roxie, Mississippi; eight grandchildren, Jerrod Adams (Kacey Cormier), Todd (Stormy) Mitchell, Richard Jeremiah (Jesica) Mitchell Brad (Jasmine) Beeny, Britton Beeny, Kaylee (Travis) Wood, Kendra Lickteig (Tristan Biswell) and Isaiah Lickteig; fourteen great-grandchildren, Adalynn, Silas, Justus, Shaylan, Waylan, Autumn, Lucas, Lincoln, Elizabeth, Toby, Zoey, Aris, Rowan and Asher; one sister, Glenda O'Neill of Pitkin; one brother, Frank (Leta) Pittman of Forest Hill; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
