Brian Dechant

Brian Dechant

Age - 50

December 11, 2023

Brian David DeChant, 50 years old, went to heaven on December 9, 2023, after a short illness. Brian was born at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on March 24, 1973, to Karen and Arthur DeChant. At the age of two, Brian was diagnosed with Cockayne Syndrome. Despite doctors' prediction of a shortened life span, not past early childhood, he defied all odds. Brian had different plans and with the devoted care of family and friends lived to celebrate his 50th birthday. He was a bright light in this world and especially in his community. Many residents and former residents of Village Mill subdivision in Dunwoody knew Brian. He would ride his bicycle through the neighborhood with a flag on the back and a radio on the front and would stop and play with any kids he could find. Brian had the cognitive abilities of a three-year-old and was mostly nonverbal, but he had his own way of communicating with others. He attended Heritage and Margaret Harris Elementary Schools and Dunwoody High School. Brian loved people and his big smile and happy personality drew others to him. Brian loved all kinds of music especially Christmas Music. His feet automatically began to tap when he heard music, and you could see pure joy on his face. He loved to go places in the car, and he especially enjoyed going on any form of mass transit. He played tennis, basketball, went bowling, and competed in the Special Olympics. Brian also enjoyed participating in the Happy Club and going to their monthly events. Brian was a longtime member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church where he had many friends. He was a person who embodied the love of God and whose pure, gentle demeanor was an example for others. He is survived by his mother, Karen DeChant, and his sister, Jenee DeChant, and many, many others who loved him. He is preceded in death by his father, Arthur DeChant, and older sister, Michelle DeChant. Brian will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family is grateful for all the caregivers over the years who worked with Brian and the staff of Haven Developmental Care where Brian lived for the last year. In lieu of the flowers, the family requests donations to the Special Needs Ministry of Dunwoody UMC by going online (https://www. dunwoodyumc. org/) or by mailing a check to the church indicating it is In Memory of Brian DeChant. Vivian "Jean" Harmon lived a life that radiated love, faith, and wisdom in every action she took. Born on December 7, 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia, Jean illuminated the lives of those around her until her peaceful passing in Conyers, Georgia, on December 6, 2023. She was a beacon of compassion and grace, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and a family who adored her deeply. Jean left this world just one day shy of her fifty-second birthday, yet her years were rich in experiences and abundant in love. Jean spent her career spreading care and comfort as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Abby Hospice for 18 years. Her dedication to the well-being of others was not just a job; it was her calling. Through her work, she became a cherished member of both her professional community and the hearts of those she aided in their final moments. Jean manifested an extraordinary capacity for empathy, making a lasting impact not only on her patients but also on their families. Family was the cornerstone of Jean's world. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Kevin Harmon, and a nurturing mother to her children, Marvin and daughter-in-law Amanda Brand, James Monkus, Benjamin Monkus, Jacob Harmon, and Nikki and son-in-law Roman Hines. The love shared within this beautiful, blended family was Jean's greatest pride and joy. Amidst life's hustle, she always found time for her grandkids, who lit up her life with boundless energy and laughter. Jean's brothers, sister, nieces, and nephew held an irreplaceable place in her heart, each of them contributing to the colorful tapestry of her cherished family life. Outside the warm embrace of her family, Jean had an eclectic array of interests that showcased her zest for life. Whether she was crafting intricate Diamond Art pieces, exploring nature through camping, or hunting for treasures at yard sales, she carried an infectious enthusiasm that inspired everyone around her. Her love for the University of Georgia Football games was more than just a pastime-it was a way she connected with friends, celebrated victories, and persevered through losses, much like in life itself. Jean's spirit was one of enduring love and timeless wisdom. She approached life's challenges with grace and viewed each obstacle as an opportunity for growth. A quote that encapsulated Jean's outlook on life: "I'm a Winner either Way. " This beautiful sentiment reflects Jean's unwavering optimism and her perpetual search for the light in every situation. Her wisdom extended beyond her years, and her guidance was a compass for those fortunate enough to cross her path. Jean saw the innate good in others and fostered that goodness through her faith-filled nature. In every interaction, she was a living example of love in action, grounded in her deep spiritual connection and her belief in the goodness of humanity. Today, as we celebrate the remarkable life of Vivian "Jean" Harmon, let us not mourn her absence but instead honor her memory by embodying the virtues she lived by daily. Let us carry forward her legacy of love, treating each day as a gift and each person we meet with kindness and compassion. Jean's life story is a testament to the power of living with an open heart and a soul full of faith. Though she has left this earthly realm, the echoes of her loving spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family, friends, and all the lives she has touched. We bid farewell to a truly extraordinary woman whose life was a masterclass in generosity, and we carry her with us in every act of kindness, each moment of connection, and through every heart she has warmed. Jean's legacy is not written in pages but in the lives she has touched and the love she leaves behind. " This is not goodbye, this is see you later. " Jean HarmonShow more

Kunjan Pillai

Kunjan Pillai

Age - 84

December 8, 2023

Kunjan Pillai of Decatur, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Mr. Pillai was born in the village of Kudayathoor, Kerala, India in February 1939, the second of four children of Krishna Pillai and his wife Pappuamma. He was the first member of his family to attend college and became a founding pillar of the Malayali community when he arrived in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thanksgiving Day, 1967, to assume a position in the radiology department at Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Pillai built a distinguished career in medical physics over the following 40 years, widely celebrated among his colleagues and friends for both his unassuming brilliance and personal warmth. Mr. Pillai's professional diligence was surpassed only by his devotion to his family--as a loving husband to his wife Usha and father to his children Satish and Parvathy and as the moral lodestone for an extended family of dozens stretching from North America to India. Mr. Pillai's duty to his family was always his utmost priority and he discharged those duties without fail or fanfare till his last day. For his family and all those who knew him, he demonstrated every day--even in the face of daunting challenges to his health--the virtues we should all strive to practice: loyalty, honesty, humility, curiosity, perseverance, self-discipline, patience, and dignity. Mr. Pillai possessed a dry wit, and his family will treasure forever decades of memories of sitting around the family room table in the home he made in Solon, Ohio, trading jokes or watching the travails of his Cleveland sports teams. He cherished hearing about his grandchildren's exploits, both in the classroom and the arts, as well as their daily silliness. He had a lifelong interest in politics, and even in his last weeks followed current affairs in both his homes--India and the United States--closely. In his post-retirement years, he cherished the opportunities he had to travel with his wife and family, including to the summit of a glacier in Alaska and by train from Nebraska to Salt Lake City. A lover of nature, he loved both traveling through Yellowstone National Park and sitting quietly on the veranda of his Decatur home watching the hummingbirds. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Usha Pillai; his devoted children, Satish Pillai of Decatur and Parvathy Pillai (and her husband Sushant Srinivasan) of Madison, Wisconsin; six grandchildren: Jay, Rohin, Rayan, Suri, Sana, and Shayn; a sister, Pappyamma, and two brothers, Balan and Chandran (Unni); and cousins, nieces, nephews, and others who loved him too numerous to name. Family and friends will receive visitors at Byrd and Flanigan at 288 Hurricane Shoals Road NE, Lawrenceville, Georgia 30046 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Friday, December 8, 2023. A memorial service and cremation rite will follow at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in Mr. Pillai's memory to a charity of their choice.Show more
