Tay Byrum of Martinsville, VA died peacefully in Arbor Acres Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC on Monday morning December 4, 2023. He was surrounded by family and a tremendously dedicated healthcare staff. Albert Gaskins Byrum Jr. , Tay to his friends, was a generous and loving father and friend. Born to Albert Gaskins Byrum Sr. and Clara Ruth Pruden Byrum in Edenton, NC, Tay attended Edenton High School, Virginia Episcopal School, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Tay loved an adventure and upon completion of his degree, he joined the US Air Force and moved his family to Biggleswade, England serving as a dentist on Chicksands RAF base. While in England he and his wife Pasty traveled throughout Europe enjoying the sites and cultures. Upon returning to the US, Tay set up his dental practice only to return shortly thereafter to Farley Dickinson University to pursue an orthodontics degree. Tay practiced orthodontics in Martinsville, VA for 28 years. Being the only orthodontist in town for most of that time, he enjoyed getting to know many of the young people in Martinsville earning him the nickname "The Tooth Doctor". After retiring, he divided his time between Martinsville, VA, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Aspen, CO. Tay especially loved his home in Aspen, where he enjoyed skiing, gazing at Aspen Mountain, and dining in fine restaurants. He was good-natured and caring with many friends and loved ones who will miss him greatly. Tay was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church and a long-standing member of Chatmoss Country Club. In addition, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Tay is survived and forever loved by his three children, Holt, Ruth, and Buck; and his grandson Cole; and a large extended family. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 321 East Church Street, Martinsville, VA beginning at 1:30 on December 20, 2023, followed by a reception from 2:30-5:00 at Chatmoss Country Club, 550 Mt. Olivet Road, Axton, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Martinsville, VA.Show more

Bobbie Jean HowardSunrise March 19, 1938, Sunset December 3, 2023 Mrs. Bobbie Jean Howard was born to Gladys Jennings Vaughn and Robert Tolliver, Sr. in Nashville, Tennessee on March 19, 1938. Bobbie was one of seven children. She was affectionally known as "Nanny". She was educated through Metro Nashville Public Schools where she graduated from Pearl High School. She attended classes at Tennessee State University. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Garnell Adolphus Howard on June 16, 1962, in Nashville, TN. She leaves to cherish her memories children, Constance D. Shelton, Bobby W. Shelton, Sheryl Sykes-Shelton, Deborah Howard Mance (Gary) of Richmond, VA, Zina Howard of Columbia, MD, and Carolyn Jackson Gardner; six grandchildren, Kevin Sykes, Jr. , Patrick Shelton, Kenneth Sykes, Ashely Mitchell, Sydney Mance (Brooklyn, NY) and Tolliver Mance (Washington, DC),: two great granddaughters, Zion Sykes and Karsten Sykes; sisters Linda Jennings and Barbara Ann Harrison; three brothers Ewell Jennings, Minister Tony Jennings, and Charles Tolliver as well as numerous devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends. He was born August 8, 1946 to the late Milton and the late Sedora Merritte Gregory in Mecklenburg County, VA. He was also preceded in death by his siblings- Marshall and Dorothy Merritte. At an early age Melvin was baptized and joined Union Hill RZUA Church, Baskerville, VA. To know Melvin, was to love him. He was a unique and caring individual who touched the lives of all who knew him. He was a 1966 graduate of the former East End High School, South Hill, VA. He was a scholar and received awards as a student. In high school he was awarded for never being absent or tardy, while being responsible for driving "Bus #6. " Melvin had a keen knack for his family history, traveling and fishing. He had a real passion for driving buses. After high school, Melvin was employed at Burlington Industries from 1966-1973. During this time, he married his former wife, Barbara Jean Winckler, and to this union a lovely daughter, Janice Marcia Gregory was born. He later decided that he wanted to get back behind the steering wheel again and joined the Greyhound Bus Lines in 1973. Throughout his career with Greyhound Bus Lines, he gained many awards and recognition for customer excellence, leadership and service, milestone awards for over 5,000,000 miles driven and 75,000 hours on the road. His route started in Virginia and ended in New York after he relocated to New Jersey in the 80's. In 1993, Melvin married Alice Palmer in Bronx, NY. Throughout the years Melvin continued to dedicate his time and service to his family and work. When not on the road working, he was on the road traveling to be with family and friends. After 30 years of service, in 2003 he retired and relocated to Richmond, VA. During his retirement time in Virginia, Melvin and Alice spent the past 20 years nesting, caring for their family and friends and don't forget about fishing and barbecuing. Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife- Alice Gregory; three daughters- Janice Marks, Stacey Creswell, and Alicia Privott; three sons-in-law, Charles Marks, Leroy Creswell, and DeAngelo Privott; three brothers- Charles (Lorraine) Gregory, Robert (Debra)Gregory, and Lonnie (Celestine) Gregory; six siblings-in-law, seven grandsons; one granddaughter; ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.Show more

Francis Flournoy "Floss" Thompson passed away Friday, December 1, 2023. Mr. Thompson was born May 21, 1935 to the late Garrie Burton Thompson, Sr. , and the late Elizabeth Raines Thompson. Francis grew up in the town of Chatham, VA. , and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy. He owned and operated Thompson's Haberdashery in Chatham and was active in numerous organizations in the town. He was an avid golfer and helped establish Cedars Country Club. Later in his life he moved to Salem, VA and owned and operated Thompson's Quality Clothes. The last five years of his life were spent at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he made many new friends who became like his family. He loved dancing and singing up and down the halls, and being of any help he could to anyone. "Floss" never met a stranger. Mr. Thompson is survived by his son, Scott H. Thompson of Delaware; daughter, Dale T. Brumfield (Barry) of Chatham; grandchildren, Alexis T. Lockerman, Hunter H. Thompson, Lukey Thompson (Lacey), John Thompson, and Joshua Mcgee, all of Delaware, as well as Emily K. Brumfield (Susann Hessen) and Joshua R. Brumfield (Chiara); thirteen great-grandchildren; and his brother, Robert B. Thompson (Debra). In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by one brother, Garrie B. John Bowe Jr. , 79, passed away on November 29, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 26, 1943 in Danville, VA to the late Ethel Garrett Bowe Covington and the late John Henry Bowe. He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Mrs. Clara Mebane Bowe. John was a member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, and was also a member of VFW Post #29. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. He worked for many years in maintenance at Danville Regional Medical Center previous to his retirement. In addition to his loving wife, John is survived by a son; Kevin Bowe and wife Theresa of Marion, AR; a daughter; Deidre Bowe of Danville, VA; four grandchildren; Chymaiah and Zoe Bowe of Marion, AR and Tamyra and Anthony Brown of Danville, VA; a daughter in law; Camille Bowe of Los Angeles, CA; a sister in law; Faye Jeffries of Austin, TX; a brother in law; George Mebane of Houston, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by a son; Ray Bowe; two sisters; Eleanor McNeill and Dorris Harper; and a brother; Wilbert Bowe. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 12:00 Noon at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 2901 Bertha Wilson Road, Providence, NC 27315 with Pastor Roderick Fitz presiding and eulogy by Pastor Teresa Hardy.
