Mary Rhodarmer

Mary Rhodarmer

Age - 89

November 30, 2023

Mary Sue Mann Rhodarmer, known by her friends as Susie, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born on June 30, 1934 to Prentice and Mattie Franklin Mann. Susie retired from CP&L in June 1996 after 37 ½ years of service. Her retirement was short-lived as she took on the role of Mamaw in October. The greatest joy of her life was caring for her one and only grandson, Matthew Head. The two of them had a bond like no other. Susie’s love language was in giving and serving others, more often than not, in the form of food. In the kitchen, she was known for her biscuits, sweet potato casserole, pound cake, and of course, her Christmas goodies. She devoted countless hours every Christmas to her fruitcake cookies, peanut butter balls, haystacks, and party mix – a recipe passed on from her sister, Lucille. Count yourself among the chosen if you were gifted any of these goodies. And then there were the dish rags and scrubbies. She undoubtedly knitted hundreds of them to give away. She put a lot of thought into the colors and who would prefer which color over another. Something so simple, but so much love in each one. Susie’s television was most always on. She was either watching a game show, an old episode of Andy Griffith, or sports. She was an avid fan of Tar Heel basketball and Braves baseball. Many of her phone conversations centered around the latest wins and losses of her favorite teams. A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Clyde, Mrs. Susie, or Su-Su, taught generations of children in Sunday School. She rarely missed a Sunday and could always be found with her lap full of children. She wiped snotty noses, changed diapers, calmed anxious little minds, and taught them all about the love of Jesus. She loved her kids and kept in touch with many of them long after they outgrew her lap. Her faith was strong, and she lived it in everything she did. In addition to her parents, Susie was preceded in death by her husband, John, who passed away in 2020. She remained unconditionally devoted to him until the end. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Carl "Buddy" Mann and William "Pete" Mann, her sisters and brothers-in law, Peggy and Bob Robinson and Lucille and Bill Wooten. Susie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dustin Toon of Clyde, grandson, Matthew Head, great-grandson, John Luke, and many nieces and nephews. During the final months of Susie’s life, she became part of the family at Pisgah Villa Assisted Living in Candler. Not surprisingly, she quickly made friends with the workers and residents alike. What a blessing they were to her. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p. m. on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at the First Baptist Church of Clyde with the Reverend Byron Burnette officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Clyde, P. O. Box 356, Clyde, NC, 28721, Pleasant Hill Cemetery, c/o Home Trust Bank, 8583 Carolina Blvd. , Clyde, NC, 28721, or Morning Star Cemetery, P. O. Box 1746, Canton, NC, 28716. The care of Mrs. Rhodarmer has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton, and an online memorial register is available at "Obituaries" at www. wellsfuneralhome. com.Show more
