Arthur Lewis Easton, 96, of Patoka passed away surrounded by the love of his family, Saturday, September 9, 2023, at his home in Patoka. He was born on May 30, 1927, the son of Harry R. and Flora Elizabeth (Houston) Easton in Patoka. He married the love of his life, Eleanor Bates on April 23, 1951, in Corinth, Mississippi and she preceded him in death on March 18, 2022. Survivors that will hold dear memories of Art include his beloved family, daughter, LuAnn (Kevin) Jones of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Adam (Grace Havis) Jones of St. Louis, and Whitney (Nick Sotolongo) Jones of Chicago; great-granddaughter, Sofia; sister-in-law, Marilyn Bates of Patoka; and several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Along with his wife of 70 years Eleanor Easton, Art was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Flora Easton; brothers, Bill Easton, and Kenneth Easton. Art was a graduate of Sandoval High School, Class of 1944. After graduation, Mr. Easton was proud to serve his country in the United States Navy. He was a faithful member of the Patoka Christian Church alongside his beloved wife, Eleanor. Art appreciated his hometown of Patoka and was an active member of the Patoka American Legion Post 543. He formed Easton Brothers, along with his brothers Bill and Kenneth. Together they farmed, raised cattle, and drove a milk truck. In his spare time, Art enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, reading, and following his favorite sports teams. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren's activities and seeing them grow up. Art will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a. m. Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Patoka Christian Church with Hap Jolliff officiating. Interment will follow at Patoka City Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Patoka American Legion Post 543. Friends and relatives are welcome to a visitation time from 10:00 a. m. until the time of the service at the church on Thursday. "Early in the morning of Nov. 25, 2023, Ethel Mae Lash, 104, was welcomed into her heavenly home. She was living at Copper Trace Nursing Facility at Westfield, Indiana. Ethel was born on July 31, 1919, in Lander, Wyoming, the daughter of Irvin and Calla \u0026quot;Callie\u0026quot; Burge. She was the youngest of five children. Keith Lash and Ethel eloped to Missouri to be married on December 27, 1938. This union was blessed with three daughters, Kay (deceased), Patricia (Joe) Hanley of Effingham, IL, and Trudy (Lyn) Grandt of Fishers, Indiana. Her life was further enriched with 8 grandchildren: Tim (Mitzi) Loy, Kim (Dan) Cousineau, Kerry (Allison) Loy, Michael (Tiffany) Lotz, Jon (Courtney) Lotz, Corey (Katie) Lotz, Amber (Tim) Backie, Autumn (Charlie) Dalton and 1 step-grandchild. Added blessings came with 20 great grandchildren, 4 step-great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren and 1 step-great great grandchild. Ethel was truly an inspiration, a wonderful loving Christian woman with a fervent devotion for her family and a smidgen of stubbornness. "LuEllen Heyduck Agee, at the blessed age of 104 years \u0026amp; 7 months, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023. Several family members surrounded this greatly loved lady as she passed to heaven. LuEllen is survived by her four children: Dr. John (Joan) Agee of Valparaiso, IN, Bill (Karen) Agee and Dave (Vicki) Agee of Centralia, and Deb (Troy) Reed of Iuka. LuEllen had 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are: Christopher Agee of Knoxville, TN, Dr. Allison (Ryan) Kane of Castle Pine, CO, Kevin Agee (Amber Gold) of Valparaiso, IN, Jenna Agee (Ryan Hepler) of Indianapolis, IN, Matt (Amy) Clarke of Wentzville, MO, Melissa (William) Petersen of Mt. Zion, IL, Megan (Al) Bazile and Mitch Agee of Centralia, Nick Reed (Danielle Trivett) of Coatesville, IN, and Dr. Chrissy Reed (Jake) Schatz of Iuka. LuEllen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Calvin B. Agee in 2002; sister, Dorothy Heyduck Denman, who died in 2022 at the age 105; special cousin, Phyllis Copple Diedrich; and special friend, Phyllis Wham. LuEllen was born April 8, 1919 to local dentist Dr. John and Lola (Fouts) Heyduck of Centralia. She lived almost all of her life in Centralia, graduating CHS class of 1937. She graduated from Christian College (Columbia College) in Columbia, MO and then transferred to the University of Illinois at Champaign. LuEllen was working on a degree to support her dream of becoming a large department store purchasing agent. Due to the death of her father, she had to leave school and return home to support her mother. LuEllen worked several jobs, but was proudest of being part of the local oil boom, where she witnessed a gusher coming in. She was honored to be employed by Magnolia Oil and Gas (which became Mobil Oil) as a scheduling manager for many years. She met Calvin Agee and later married in Columbia, MO on June 4, 1949. They returned to live and work in the Centralia area. LuEllen worked until the birth of her first child. Eventually, she had 4 children, under 4 years old, at the age of 39. She remained a homemaker and enjoyed raising and supporting her children, being interested and directly involved in their adult lives. She loved her family dearly. We have been extremely grateful to have had her so long. LuEllen was a longstanding and loyal friend to many fellow Centralia residents, whom nearly all, she has survived. She will be greatly missed by her family and all that knew her. LuEllen was a member of many community groups, including the Jr. Women's Club and P. E. O. International (53 year member), and the First Christian Church. She volunteered several years at Kaskaskia College, where she received certificate awards for her benevolence. Her most recent notoriety was in 2022, when she rode the bull at the Iron Saddle Ranch on her 103rd birthday. LuEllen was an avid animal lover. She enjoyed the many dogs and cats that she had throughout her life. The family even had a pet monkey. She found comfort from her latest cat companion, Mr. Tramp. LuEllen had a love for flowers. She took great pride in her flower garden, especially her roses. She has been saddened the last year as her physical agility has decreased, but has remained mentally sharp, interactive, and loving to all. LuEllen was able to stay at home with the help of her family, Angie Ellis and her group of caregivers. , 68, of Patoka passed away Friday, November 24, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on December 21, 1954, the son of Paul Fred and Fidelis Victoria (Fohne) Vosholler in Breese. He married Sonja Sheri Sundell on September 4, 1983, in Sparks, NV, and she survives him in Patoka. Along with his devoted wife of 40 years, Bob is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Kline of Carlyle, Jill Tweedy and husband Travis of Carlyle, Debra Dalton and husband Brandon of Dalton, GA; grandchildren, Kylee Kline, Kori Kline, Casandra Lindley, Johnnie Lindley, Makhenna Lindley, Jersey Tweedy, Willow Tweedy, Aidyn Tweedy, Warren Dalton, and Sarah Dalton; great-grandchild, Teigan Newcomb and expecting his second great-grandchild; brothers, Ray Vosholler of Sandoval, Joe Vosholler and wife Mary of Vernon, and John Vosholler and wife Mitzie of Vernon; sisters, Carol Thompson and husband Jim of Centralia, and Betty Onken and husband Dan of Rapid City, SD; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents. Bob was a good man, with a strong work ethic. After a hard day of work driving a truck, he enjoyed getting in the tractor to farm and take care of his cattle. He was an excellent protector and provider for his family, and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for his wife, daughters, and grandkids. Bob enjoyed the simple things in life, such as hanging out in the shed drinking a cold stag and telling stories with friends and family. He loved the recreational activity of hunting and fishing with family. Bob will be remembered for his witty sense of humor, way of making others feel at ease, and his love for his big dog. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a. m. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Carlyle with Father George Mauck officiating. , age 79, of Odin, Illinois, passed away on November 20th in Centralia, Illinois. He was born on August 24, 1944, in Centralia, Illinois. He is survived by wife Debbie (McClelland), his children Michael Grasher (Tracy) of Ponte Verde Beach, Florida. Daughter Michelle (Mara Rakestraw) of Bloomington, Illinois, son Matthew (Ann) of Altamont, Illinois; stepchildren Jason and Laurie McClelland; grandchildren Collin, Brody, Henry, and Olivia Grasher, sisters Judi Jennetten (John) and Julie Payne (Mack); brother Thom (Cathy); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Helen (Schnitzmeyer) Grasher and former wife Marilyn (Wesling). Roger is also survived by his grieving dog, Tucker, a celebrity in the community. Roger graduated from Sandoval High School, where he was a basketball star and member of the famous 1960-61 Sandoval High School Basketball Fraternity. He later served on the Sandoval School Board for several years. Roger was a farmer and well-known Holstein breeder, earning honors at county fairs and the Illinois State Fair with his prize-winning herd. Gaining international recognition, he sold cows to Japanese dairymen, to Paris, France, and traveled to Canada to study Holstein breeding methods. He was recognized statewide and was a former member of the Illinois Holstein Association. Roger taught children in 4-H programs and was proud of his own children's accomplishments, winning prizes at fairs for their showmanship. He was an avid fan of his children's athletic pursuits and later, Grandpa Rog enjoyed watching Henry and Olivia's sporting events. Grandpa Rog was also proud of Collin and Brody's achievements. In later life, he was owner/operator of his own trucking business. He made friends wherever he traveled. Roger was a lifetime member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Sandoval, Illinois, and active member of the Knights of Columbus. Roger was well-known for his coveted BBQ grilling skills that he often shared along with his garden bounty with both family and friends. He possessed a unique gift of humorous storytelling that was intertwined with his many life adventures. We have lost a legend storyteller. After numerous hospitalizations, may Roger rest in peace. The family would like to extend their gratefulness to all those who helped in Roger's care and for the many visits and phone calls that meant so much to him. "Constance Suzanne "Connie" (Boss) Mullen, 83, died peacefully in the Lord, fortified by the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, on November 8, 2023 at Centralia Manor in Centralia, Illinois. Connie was born the third daughter of Harry \u0026amp; Mildred (Schneider) Boss on October 6, 1940 in Alton, Illinois. After proudly attending St. Mary Grade School and Marquette Catholic High School, both in Alton, she married her high school sweetheart, Michael K. Mullen, on October 1, 1960. Her early career involved work as a secretary at Owens-Illinois in Alton. After marriage, she was an excellent homemaker and loved working with the Girl Scouts of America in Salem. For her dedicated work, she was presented with the Thanks Badge, the highest honor given by the Girl Scouts at that time. When her sons began Cub Scouts, she became a den mother. Along with other couples, they were instrumental in the re-opening of St. Theresa School in 1977. From then, she volunteered as the school secretary and later worked as the parish secretary as well, where she was awarded Secretary of the Year in the City of Salem. She took pride in being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She retired in 1992 to care for her father. She was well-known for her gentle demeanor, her cheerful laugh, and her ability to organize family vacations and major fundraisers. She was a talented crafter, gardener, and cook, especially Holiday Dinners. Along with Mike, she assisted Santa every December for many years. She continued to volunteer for St. Theresa's as long as she could. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2016 and spent nearly five years at Centralia Manor, where she received excellent and compassionate care. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Harry \u0026amp; Mildred Boss, her father- and mother-in-law John and Lillian Mullen, her infant sister Mary Jane Boss, her toddler sister Virginia Lee Boss, her brother Henry "Hank" Boss, and her first daughter, Kelley Ann Mullen. She is survived by her travel companion, best friend, and husband of 63 years, Michael Mullen of Salem, Michele (David) Steele of Salem, Patrick (Patty) Mullen of Six Mile, SC, Fr. Godfrey Mullen, OSB, of Belleville, and John (Jan) Mullen of Brownsburg, Indiana. She and Mike also have ten grandchildren: Michael (Jenna) Steele of Prospect, KY, Jacob (Nina) Steele of Okinawa, and Thomas Steele of Chicago; Tory (Aleks) Siegel of Ipswich, MA, Chris (Lexi) Mullen of Elk Grove Village, IL, Joe Mullen of Mystic, CT, Ryan Mullen of Mystic, CT, and John (fiancee Megan Carr) Mullen of Dallas, TX; Joshua Mullen of Mt. He was born on August 7, 1973, the son of Loyd and Linda (Showers) Anderson in Mt. Vernon. He married the love of his life, his best friend, Christie Phillips on June 29, 2003, in Centralia and she survives him in Centralia. Along with his devoted wife Christie Anderson, survivors that will remember Dickie with a smile include his mother, Linda Wilson of Olean, Missouri; his sisters, Becky Warren of Salem, Illinois, Jennifer Wine of Olean, Missouri, Crystal Wardenburg of Olean, Missouri, Kim Smith of Centralia, Melissa Clark of New Hampshire; his brothers, Michael Gerard of Tennessee, and Jim Robinett of Hoyleton, Illinois; his mother-in-law, Loretta Phillips; his sister-in-law, Susan Wild of Brighton, Illinois, and Gail Ridgeway of DuQuoin, Illinois; many special nieces and nephews; and his furry babies, his loyal beagles, Angel and Gideon. Dickie was preceded in death by his father, Loyd Anderson and his wife Barbara; his sister, Tammy Robinett; and his father-in-law, Larry Phillips. Dickie lived most all his life in Centralia. He had a strong work ethic and was a loyal employee for Big 3 Precision, working as a supervisor there for 20 years. It was during this time that Dickie made many lasting friendships with his co-workers. He was an expert gamer and he and his wife, Christie were known to dominate the games they played together. They were also a great team while bowling. Dickie had a need for speed, and enjoyed watching races, especially Nascar. He liked to travel and was taken by the beauty of the landscape when he traveled out West. Dickie always looked forward to family gatherings, where he could be counted on to bring his famous barbeque. Dickie appreciated the simple things in life, he was a true loyal friend, always ready to give a listening ear, and his devotion to his family was a blessing. , 89, former police chief for the City of Centralia, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family, at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born on December 4, 1933, the son of Frederick Albert and Amelia Minnie (Vogt) Speidel in Centralia. He married the love of his life, Mary Kaye Griffith on February 13, 1982, in Iuka and she survives him in Centralia. Along with his devoted wife of 41 years, Mary Kaye Speidel, survivors that will always remember Arland's million-dollar smile include his beloved family, daughter, Jennifer Copple and husband Cameron and their son, Theodore of St. Jacob, Illinois; son, Timothy Speidel and wife Elizabeth of Fulshear, Texas and their children, Mary and Frederick; mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Griffith; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Greg Griffith, James Griffith and wife Cristy, and Bonnie Griffith and husband Michael Smith; special nephew, James "Jimmy" Dalton and fiancee Christeen Hernandez; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends. Arland was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Amelia Speidel; sister, Elise Louise Speidel; brothers, Gene Speidel, and Edward Speidel; father-in-law, James Griffith; and sister-in-law, Laurie Dalton. Arland began his elementary education at Lakeview Grade School and was a proud graduate of Wamac Grade School. He graduated from Centralia Township High School, Class of 1952. He worked as a carrier for the Centralia Sentinel, and at Hollywood Candy Factory in Centralia before joining the United States Army on February 9, 1954. Mr. Speidel served his country with pride, during the Korean conflict and continued to serve in the United States Army Reserves from February 8, 1956, until 1984. He was selected and presented with the honor of Centralia's Veteran of the Year in 2013. True to his compassionate nature, Arland offered fellow veterans assistance as the Vice Commander of AMVETS. Arland held the elite honor of Grand Chef De Gare and Garde De La Porte of the Voiture Locale 516 of the Forty and Eight from 2009 until 2016. He was an active member of, and a welcome, friendly face at the American Legion Post 446 in Centralia. Arland was well known and well-loved in Centralia, and he could not have been more grateful to serve in a community he loved just as much. On May 17, 1962, he saw his dream of serving and protecting others fulfilled with his sworn oath to the Police Department for the City of Centralia. He graduated from the Police Training Institute, Champaign, Illinois on March 29, 1968. Arland was promoted to Sergeant on February 1, 1973, Lieutenant on May 19, 1975, and Captain on October 25, 1982. In a diligent effort to expand his knowledge and training, he attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virgina in 1989. He succeeded Chief Kermit Justice on September 2, 1986. Chief Speidel operated with integrity, never compromising his duty to lead by example, and was an ever-present encouragement to his fellow officers until his retirement on January 15, 1999. He never truly left the department though, as Arland continued to keep his connection to his work family, staying involved with current officers and retirees, mentoring new officers, attending weapons qualifications, stopping by the department to share "back in the day" stories, and attending every annual department Christmas party. Arland was a member of the Clinton County Law Enforcement Association, Southern Illinois Police Chief's Association, Southern Illinois Administrator's Association, Illinois Police Benevolent and Protective Association, Police Pension Board, and the Illinois Police Association. He was a member of the Centralia Masonic Lodge #201, Centralia Elk's Lodge, and Rotary Club of Centralia. He served on the Centralia Area Historical Museum Board, the Marion County Fair Board, 25 years on a Centralia Balloon Fest Committee, as a Chair, and Central City Grade School Board for years, even after his retirement. Arland was a man of faith and a member of the Greenview Christian Church since 1982. He and his wife Mary Kaye were a beautiful example of the work and benefit of putting their spouse's needs above their own. Arland was overjoyed to be the best Dad to his children, Jen and Tim, showing them loving support, never missing any game, dance recital or band competition, and championing them in each season of their lives. Arland had a zest for life that was contagious and was never seen without his iconic grin. He shall be deeply missed and his kind, gentle, class act will never be forgotten. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p. m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Greenview Christian Church in Centralia with Pastor John Klockenga officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia, where military rites will be accorded by the Centralia VFW Post 2055 and the American Legion Post 446. Friends and relatives are welcome to a visitation Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Greenview Christian Church in Centralia. The visitation will begin at 5:00 p. m. with the American Legion Post 446 Walk Thru, honoring their fellow veteran. The visitation will conclude at 7:00 p. m. when Arland will be honored with a Masonic Funeral Service by Centralia Masonic Lodge #201, and he will receive his final salute from his brothers and sisters in blue, the Centralia Police Department. "John Dietrich, 76, of Salem, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, surrounded by his family listening to some of his favorite songs. He was born February 18, 1947 in Salem, the son of Fred Dietrich and Evelyn (Koelker) Dietrich. He married Debbie Rhoads on September 13, 1997 in Salem and she survives. In addition to his wife of 26, years, Debbie Dietrich of Salem, John is also survived by his five children: Melanie Webb and husband Larry of Ewing, B. J. Dietrich and wife Isabel of St. Louis, Missouri, Chris Holm and wife Ashley of Denver, Colorado, Andy Holm and wife Anne of Jackson, Missouri, and Scott Holm and wife Susan of Kansas City, Missouri; twelve grandchildren: Grace, Eli, Aaron, Evan, Lexi, Claire, Emma, Elena, Issac, Jake, Bennett, and Veronica; his sister: Anne Elkins and husband George of Aiken, South Carolina; one niece: Elizabeth Chisholm and husband Michael of Aiken, South Carolina; several great-nephews; and several friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Evelyn Dietrich. In the earlier years, John would help coach little league baseball with his son, B. J. and he never missed one of Melanie's dance recitals. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan and he was also a hardcore Duke Basketball Fan. If you drove by John's house, you could find him working on his free throw shot or just shooting hoops in his driveway. Traveling to Las Vegas and Destin, Florida were two of his favorite spots to visit with his wife, Debbie. John had an unreal love for music. The Doobie Brothers, Reo Speed Wagon, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, were a few of his favorite Rock N Roll bands. John was a devoted husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all. Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 16, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Sutherland-Rankin Funeral Home in Salem with Pastor Denise Burke officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at funeral home. Burial will follow at the East Lawn Cemetery in Salem.
