Dr. Vijaykumar B. Mehta was born in Baroda, India, on August 14, 1933. Raised by his parents, Dr. Bansidhar and Bhanuben Mehta, alongside his siblings Jay, Usha, Nina, and Digvijay, he grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in him the values of love, compassion, and hard work. A dedicated advocate for education, he committed himself to ensuring that both his siblings and children would benefit from a formal education. As the first physician in his family, Dr. Mehta devoted himself to his patients, providing endless nurturing care. He earned his dual degree in Medicine and Surgery from Baroda Medical College in 1959, followed by completing his Internal Medicine training in 1962. Furthering his education, he obtained his M. R. C. P in Internal Medicine in 1965 and later specialized in Hematology, completing his fellowship training at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts in 1968. Immigrating to the US in 1974, he commenced his career at McCain Hospital in McCain, NC, before settling in Fayetteville, NC, in 1977. He practiced Hematology and Internal Medicine at Cape Fear Valley Health System and his private practice, Mehta Medical Services, until his retirement in 2005. In 1972, Vijaykumar met the love of his life, Hasumati, and they celebrated over 50 years of marriage. They raised their three children, Sandeep (may he rest in peace), Gita, and Virat, in Fayetteville, surrounded by a loving community that provided everlasting and unconditional support. With an open mind and warm heart, he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Wilfrido Navarrete, and his daughter-in-law, Emily Mehta, and adored his four grandchildren, Aliza, Kieran, Caiden, and Alokh. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he took great joy in watching them grow and thrive. Dr. Mehta, once a giant presence, evolved into a gentle and always smiling soul. He gracefully accepted and conquered every challenge in his way. His indomitable will to fight will be remembered, and his legacy lives on in those fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
