Age - 101

March 27, 2023

Maria Josephine Gemo Orrigo, "Chippy", age 101, passed away peacefully at her son's home in Little Silver, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Parlin and spent every summer on the porch of her beach house in Pt. Pleasant - her favorite place in the world. She enjoyed the cold winter months in Florida with her sister at her son's home winning at the casinos. Before her retirement, Maria worked in the Sayreville High School cafeteria for 20 years secretly adding an extra burger to those in need. She was a devout Catholic and proud parishioner of St. Bernadette RC Church in Parlin. Chippy's longevity is a testament to her unparalleled sense of positivity, and glass-half full view on life. At 101 years old she defied her age, still "hip" even down to the way she dressed, and her interest in pop culture. She loved to travel the world with her sister Nettie, bringing countless souvenirs home from Europe and Asia. She was a teller of great stories, a teacher of great recipes, and an extraordinary listener to her collection of many friends and her adoring family. She lived for fashion and described all fabric colors with food terminology - "lemon yellow, tomato red, eggplant. " She was an avid vintage film buff and would watch her favorite "story" over and over for years, infatuated with romance and drama. Maria is predeceased by her husband Thomas, her sister and best friend, Nettie Gemo, and her brothers Nicholas, Angelo, Philip and Louis Gemo. Surviving are her sons Gregory of Florida, and Kenneth and his wife Debbie of Little Silver; her grandchildren Clayton and Brianna and her husband Chris Torcivia; and her great-grandchildren, Tucker, Harper and Piper Torcivia. For over a century, she made the world a better place, bringing joy and laughter to so many. Her absence is a hole, impossible to fill, but her memory and stories will last forever. Her family and friends will miss her dearly, but will celebrate her incredible life. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 9:15am from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin, with a 10:00am Mass at St. Bernadette RC Church in Parlin. A burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Parlin. Calling hours at the funeral home will take place on Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm.
