Arlene "Patricia" Richards Clifford, 88, of Guilford (formerly of Hamden), passed away peacefully at her home on September 7, 2023, after a brief illness. Wife of the late Robert W. Clifford, Pat was born in New Haven on March 3, 1935, daughter of the late George and Catherine (Callahan) Richards and was pre-deceased by a brother, George Richards, Jr. Mrs. Clifford leaves behind four loving sons: Daniel (Elizabeth) of Hamden, Brendan (Michele) of Guilford, Robert of Guilford, and Andrew (Kara) of North Haven; five grandchildren: Gregory, Samantha, Victoria, Robert, and Brendan Matthew; and two great-grandsons: Jack and Keegan, with a third to be named shortly. Pat grew up in New Haven and graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1952. At 21, she graduated from New Haven Teachers College ('56), got married and began her educational career as a kindergarten teacher. As if raising four boys wasn't enough, she continued her education, earning a Master's ('74) and Sixth Year degree ('80). In 1995, she moved to Guilford, and shortly after, retired from the New Haven Public School system, where she had worked as a school psychologist for many years. In retirement, Pat kept busy travelling, attending Broadway shows, movies, concerts, grandkids' sporting events, and volunteering in her community. And, of course, she never missed a Sunday mass. Pat was a superwoman in every regard: strong, independent, and selfless. A true matriarch, she had endless pride for her family and led the way through all of life's triumphs and tragedies. She had tremendous faith and met every challenge--including a terminal diagnosis--with grace, dignity, and an endearing sense of humor. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her, including many lifelong friends with whom she kept in touch. Rest easy, Ma. We'll take it from here. Paul Howard DeCoster, of Woodbridge, Connecticut, died on Wednesday November 1, 2023, at Yale New Haven Hospital, at the age of 89. Born November 8, 1933, in South Paris, Maine and raised in Laconia, New Hampshire, Paul was a graduate of Yale University and Law School and practiced law in New York City for 42 years before retiring to Woodbridge with his wife Judy in 1999. In retirement, Paul dedicated himself to community service and local causes in Woodbridge, being active in the Historical Society and Massaro Farm. A life-long student, he took courses in mathematics, statistics and history at Southern Connecticut State University for 15 years. He was also a patron and appreciator of the arts, particularly music. Finally, Paul was a life-long servant of the Democratic Party, an institution he was dedicated to and, invariably, disappointed by. In addition to Judy, his wife of 65 years, Paul is survived by his sister Carol Innes, his three children, Emily, Paul and Matthew, his daughters-in-law Raquel and Erika, and his sole grandchild, Jesse Durbin. Marguerite Potter

On Tuesday, November 21st 2023 Marguerite D. Potter passed away after a long illness. Marguerite was a longtime resident of Guilford. She was born in New Haven, CT, on December 28th 1944, the daughter of the late Stephen and Eloise Woodford Roberts. Marguerite is survived by her husband Harry R Potter Jr and her three children. Karen Jean Graf (Clive) of Groton, CT, Mary Catherine Mendyka (Richard) of Hamden, CT, and Harry Potter III of Guilford, CT, her grandchildren Cody Avery and Clinton Avery and Tyler Cancelli. Along with a brother Stephen Roberts of Guilford. She was predeceased by four brothers Warren, Frank, Ray, Robin and her sister Eloise. Marguerite (Maggie) always enjoyed having family around whether celebrating birthdays or hosting family picnics, or playing go-fish with her grandsons. She also enjoyed the time she spent with the staff at the strong house. Maggie worked in the Guilford School system in the cafeteria at Calvin Leete Elementary School. She also worked at Bentons Market for many years until they closed and at Pinchbecks grading roses. Ethel Harrison

Ethel "Vicky" Harrison, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Branford Hospice on November 14th, 2023 at the age of 86. She was born on July 1st, 1937 to the late Alice Colter Brindley and the late Leslie Vernon Brindley. She was the beloved wife of the late Dudley Arthur Harrison for more than sixty years. Vicky is survived by her two cherished daughters, Susan Harrison Toal (Terry), Sandra Harrison Faulkner (Cliff) and her sister, Lesie Brindley Potter (Ted, deceased). She also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren, Devan Toal Zadrozny (Justin), Shannon Victoria Toal, Matthew Ryan Faulkner (Hannah), Lucy Faulkner Buffalo (Bennett). She is also survived by two treasured great-grandchildren, Willow Rose Faulkner and John Joseph Zadrozny "Jack". Vicky graduated from Wilbur Cross High School with honors and New Britain State college, majoring in elementary education. She went on to teach at Melissa Jones elementary school in Guilford, Ct and later became a stained glass craftsman. Vicky and her husband lived on Harrison Farm on North Street in North Branford, where they were known for growing Christmas trees, producing maple syrup, and growing blueberries. Vicky loved music and played numerous instruments, her favorite being the mandolin. She and Dudley played in the North Street band, called the Last Hayride. She was especially proud of her family and always looked forward to family gatherings. Her greatest passion after her family was being outdoors in nature, hiking, gardening, camping, and preserving nature. An extremely generous women, Vicky and Dudley donated the Harrison Farm Preserve to the North Branford Land Conservation Trust, to be enjoyed by generations to come. Henry Berliner

Age - 73

Henry Berliner, who enriched the lives of innumerable New Haven residents through his passion for books, community, and conversation, died on October 25th at the age of 73, surrounded by loving family and friends. Known to many in New Haven through his career as the owner of The Foundry Bookstore, "Hank" was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin, whose easy laugh, rich knowledge, and geniality earned him friends throughout his life. Henry was born on February 3, 1950, the son of Robert and Leah Berliner. He grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1972. Between protests against the Vietnam War in college and observing life in an autocracy as a high school exchange student in the Philippines, Henry honed a sharply critical political sense. He moved to New Haven in 1973, where he met his wife of 46 years, Mickey Kavanagh, at a pickup softball game (a sport that Henry kept playing and/or cheering for nearly all of those 46 years). Aside from spending time with family and friends, Henry's greatest passion was books. He spent his working years at The Foundry Bookstore on Whitney Avenue, and for 29 years from 1974 to 2003 curated and sold a delightful collection of titles in every genre, though fiction, history, and children's stories were arguably the stars of the shelves. Every customer who sought a recommendation could be directed to just the right location, for just the right book, which more often than not had been read by the proprietor himself. Much like Henry, the space was warm and abundant, with books in every nook and cranny, and faithfully served the literary needs of the New Haven and Yale communities alike. Reading was not a solitary affair - Henry shared his love through book clubs, book reviews on public radio, and a seemingly endless supply of gifted and regifted books to family and friends. Henry loved baseball, birding, barefoot expeditions, music, travel, camping, and meals filled with conversation and laughter - the more he could share, the merrier he and everyone else would be. Henry will be deeply missed by his family, including wife Mickey Kavanagh; daughters Juleah and Jemal; grandson Lake; sister Alice Hadler and her husband James Hadler; sister Nancy Berliner and her husband Alan Plattus; brother Robert Berliner and his wife Kathy Ameche; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a. m. on November 25th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving (Henry's favorite holiday), at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, CT. Kent Bloomer

Age - 88

Kent Cress Bloomer of Guilford, CT, sculptor, author, professor of Architectural Design at the Yale School of Architecture for 53 years and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Architecture for 20, passed away in his home on October 22, 2023, at the age of 88. Bloomer was born in Mount Vernon, NY, on May 31, 1935, to Harold Franklin Bloomer and Allene Cress Bloomer. He grew up in Riverside, CT. He attended St. Luke's School in New Canaan, CT, and studied physics and architecture at MIT before transferring to study sculpture at the Yale School of Art and Architecture when Josef Albers of the Bauhaus was head of Yale's Department of Design, earning a BFA in 1959 and an MFA in 1961. Kent began his long teaching career at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Architecture, where he taught "Basic Design" from 1961 to 1966. In Pittsburgh his sculptures won top awards in shows of the Associated Artists and the International. They were also exhibited in museums across the country from the New York Museum of Modern Art to the Los Angeles County Museum. In 1965 he founded the "Kent Bloomer Studio" when he was awarded the commission to design the bas relief for Pittsburgh's Rodef Shalom Temple, his first public display transitioning from stand-alone sculptures to architectural ornament which was to become his life-long pursuit. In 1966, when he was recruited to Yale by Charles Moore, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, he moved his studio to Guilford and later to the Erector Square building in New Haven. At Yale, in 1978, he began teaching "Ornament Theory and Design" which evolved into a seminar he taught until his retirement in 2019. His contribution to architectural education was recognized with the school's festschrift publication, Kent Bloomer Nature as Ornament. Bloomer's public ornament is visible throughout the United States, including the roof of the Harold Washington Library Center, Chicago Public Library, a window wall in the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the luminaires in New York City's Central Park and gothic lights, display cases, gates, and more on the Yale campus. In 2018 his "Puzzle Ball" and "Dragon Gate" were constructed for the Bridge School in Shanghai. In addition to his studio production, Bloomer is the principal author of Body, Memory, and Architecture, written with Charles Moore, and the author of The Nature of Ornament plus 9 chapters in books and 32 articles in journals on subjects involving ornament. His latest manuscript, written with concert pianist Karin Nagano and completed in 2023, is a comparison of figures of ornament in music with figures of ornament in architecture. Bloomer's hilarious cartoons of student antics were printed in school publications throughout his student years. He was a gifted musician as well, playing Dixieland jazz drums in bands as a teenager as well as the piano, and later the Hammond B3 organ in his home. He was also an avid life-long sailor, racing in New England waters during his childhood, sailing with his family, and later transitioning from sailboats to his beloved wooden double-ender, Barnacle, on which he cruised for 20 summers with his wife. Bloomer leaves his wife of 64 years, Leonor "Nona" Golay Bloomer, his son, Mark Clifford Bloomer, Mark's children, Katelin Qiao Bloomer and Jasper Tian Bloomer, daughter May (Jack) Hoyt, and May's children, Skylar Cress Bartels and Wiley Wakeman Bartels. A memorial service is planned for May 2024 with a Dixieland band playing dirge music. The Hawley Lincoln Memorial, Guilford, is in charge of arrangements. Janet Stone

Age - 83

Janet Stone, born on August 2nd, 1940 in Hempstead, NY, began her journey as a beautiful daughter to Johanna and John Schlitt. Being the eldest among her siblings, John (Magda), Donald (Suzanne), and Richard (Suzanne) Schlitt, Janet embraced her role as a guiding light for her family with grace and love. In her own journey of motherhood, Janet was blessed with three children, Deborah (Edwin Ortiz), Michael (Lashanda), and Scott Stone. The family mourned the loss of Scott, who died suddenly exactly 38 years ago on the same date Janet passed away. Today and everyday we cherish the joy Scott brought into Janet's life along with Mike and Deb. While her kids were little, Janet was a full time mom, and she took her job seriously. She was a cub scout leader, and an active member of the PTA. She made clothing and costumes, and showed up for every event her children participated in. It was through her children that Janet realized one of her greatest gifts: being a Granny. She moved from Connecticut to Tennessee the day after her first grandchild was born in 1988. Fifi, Michael, Katie, Mandi, Maya, and Sterling were not only recipients of her affection but also witness to their grandmother's incredible talent for knitting sweaters and blankets, sewing clothes for the kids and their dolls, or creating heartfelt felt stockings. Through these acts of love and creativity, Janet nurtured bonds that will forever be cherished by her adoring grandchildren. She was also blessed to be a Great Granny to Zane, Millie, Bailee, River Grace, Johnanna & Eliana. She learned just weeks ago that another precious great grand was on the way, and she made sure that she had the fixings to create a felt stocking for Mac. If there is one word that encapsulates Janet's character flawlessly, it would be generosity. Her heart overflowed with empathy and warmth for all those she loved. She possessed an innate ability to understand others' struggles and offer a comforting presence during times of need. Compassion seemed second nature to Janet; she never hesitated to lend a helping hand or extend kindness wherever she could. We can all learn from her selflessness. Janet was not only reliable in her dedication towards others but also in her pursuits professionally. Beginning in 1989 at an entry-level position at a local bank branch, she excelled and moved up to finish her career with an Accounting Firm's Trust Department until her retirement in 2014 at 74 years old - she exemplified perseverance and commitment. Janet's work ethic and dedication were commendable, leaving an indelible mark on her colleagues and the organizations she served. She still has relationships with the people she worked with. Once she retired, most days you would find Janet working in her yard. She mowed her own grass with a push mower until last year! She also maintained her own landscaping and she found hours of pleasure working in the flower garden. She asked for a chainsaw for her 80th birthday! She also loved decorating her home, and she spent hours picking out the perfect lighting, furnishings and carpets. For fun, she loved to read and work on jigsaw puzzles. In matters of spirituality, Janet was raised in the Lutheran church. Her faith guided her actions and provided solace throughout life's trials. A few close friendships played a significant role in Janet's life. For years, she cherished the companionship of Pam and Rose, forming unbreakable bonds through shared experiences and mutual interests. It was at church that Janet first met Pam, and their love for square dancing and travel only strengthened their friendship over time. As for Rose, their connection goes back to her time in Connecticut before moving to Nashville, growing stronger even at a distance as they supported each other through the highs and lows of life. Many others served as traveling companions and support over the years. Janet was blessed to have a beautiful support system rooted in love and trust. As we say our goodbyes to Janet Stone, let us remember the compassionate, generous, kind, and reliable person she was. Her legacy lives on through her family, her children, grandchildren, great grands, and friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her. Janet Stone touched our lives with love and brought joy to countless hearts. May her gentle spirit forever remain in our memories as a reminder of the beauty that lies within each of us. As we bid farewell to our beloved friend today, let us be grateful for having had the privilege of knowing such an extraordinary soul. Ann Talbott

Age - 23

Everyone who knew Ann and David admired their love and devotion to each other throughout their 46 years of marriage. They were inseparable and operated as a team in everything they did - from squash tournaments to collecting shells to attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to their unique property in Guilford, CT. Dave retired in 2020 from his 38-year career coaching squash at Yale, to care for Ann as her dementia progressed. On Sunday September 17, 2023 Ann died suddenly, and an hour or so later David suffered a massive heart attack. Despite heroic efforts by the hospice nurse, paramedics, and the Yale New-Haven Hospital cardiac ICU team, David passed away on September 19. He was surrounded by family members and the loving prayers of his family circle and countless friends. Ann and David's birthdays are a day apart. Ann was born in San Diego on June 17, 1952 and David was born in San Francisco a day later. They met in Atlanta when they were 23 years old and married when they were 25. Ann's daughter Shannon was then 5 years old, and David adopted her. After serving as the squash pro at the Baltimore Country Club and the Detroit Athletic Club, Yale University hired David to coach the men's squash team in 1983, and so began his lauded career in college squash. David was known as the unofficial "commissioner" for the World Professional Squash WPSA Tour by organizing and putting together scheduling for the tour. His own highest rank was #12 in the WPSA tour. Ann was by David's side at virtually every squash event and happily served as the "den mother" to David's squash teams. At the same time she applied her executive and bookkeeping skills in various businesses. For a number of years, Ann and David owned and managed Orchard Hill, a natural food store in Branford, CT. Ann and David truly loved their family, friends, neighbors, and contacts throughout the squash world. Their circle of love and care was always expanding, and their influence upon others' lives was deep and abiding. The pain from the loss is being felt far and wide. Grieving family members include their daughter Shannon Talbott, son-in-law Mike Alberts, grandson Owen Alberts, Ann's two Bartlett siblings, David's five Talbott siblings, nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, and their beloved Angel Dog Zen. A Celebration of Their Lives will occur at a future date. Alice Hayden

On September 16, 2023 Alice stepped out of her body and onto the path to see what was next. Alice Gail Hayden, born in Hartford January 20th 1937 to Frances Harvey and Haskell Hayden. The younger sister of Veterinarian Harvey Hayden, still practicing in Sharon, CT, cousin to Faith Fisler of D. C. area. Alice loved telling family stories around the dinner table and had an amazing memory, able to list off her grandparents going back some 10+ generations. She prized her Hayden genealogy book, tracing Hayden's back to not only their arrival in Massachusetts 1630 but their lineage in England before that. She was a a descendant of William Hayden of the Pequot war, founder of Hayden Station CT, who was in turn a descendant of the order of the knights who settled Heydon in Norfolk also known as Stinton England. A graduate of Suffield High (1954) and UConn (1959) where she received her accounting degree. She worked for Connecticut General and after marrying Arthur Carter, of Guilford, she served as a civilian contractor (1961). In the late 60s they opened an attorney's office together on Whitfield Street, here in Guilford. After their divorce she completed her C. P. A. exams and was a self employed accountant, primarily handling personal and estate taxes as well as payroll. She lived in Madison for thirteen years with her partner Donald Reddick (predeceased). She was a wonderful watercolorist and member of the "Friday Night Painters" for many decades, a group started under Dan Rice. Alice is survived by her sons: Richard, Daniel (wife Sue), and Robert Carter as well as her grandchildren, Diana (28), Hayden (23), Marly (21) and Benjamin Levi (7). Within the last few years she was diagnosed with breast cancer, the third time in her life and dealt with further health complications. She passed away while in home hospice under the loving care of her family and nurses. Even through her illness she maintained her quality of kindness and great sense of humor. She is dearly missed already. A memorial service with the family will be held at Hawley Lincoln Memorial on Thursday September 28th 1-3 PM at 1315 Boston Post Road, Guilford. It was Alice's request that those attending do not wear black, she wished for a celebration of her life not a mourning of her passing.Show more

Stephen Shattuck

Age - 76

Stephen Anthony Shattuck, 76, who liked to be called Tony, passed away on September 8 at CT Hospice, with his wife and members of his family there with him. Tony was born in Jeffersonville VT on November 5 1946, a son of the late Watts Shattuck and Grace Maloney Shattuck. He is survived by his loving wife Carmela Sanseverino Shattuck and step children Frank (Betsy) Stellato, and Stephen Stellato and grandchildren Lauren Frances Stellato and Joelle Mae Stellato. Tony also leaves behind his brother William (Theresa, deceased), and sisters Elaine Shattuck and Virginia (Rick) Dugan. Tony graduated from Rockville High School in Vernon Ct. and went on to receive a degree from UConn School of Nursing. He also received a certificate as a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), from the University of Michigan. During his successful career as a Nurse Anesthetist, Tony worked at Griffin Hospital and several institutions in the state. Tony was a lover of life who enjoyed many hobbies and advocations, including ballroom dancing, baking(especially bread and rolls), and being a number one fan of UConn Women's basketball and the Boston Red Sox. He loved music and in addition to playing the French horn, he was a talented singer who enjoyed lending his tenor voice to the choir at St John's Episcopal Church. He received great pleasure from listening to music of all kinds from Broadway to opera, and loved attending all of the school productions in which Joelle and Lauren participated. Tony really appreciated life and his cheering voice could usually be heard whenever he watched a game. He fully assimilated into Carmela's large Italian family, and learned to appreciate all the customs and traditions that followedTony was buried in a private ceremony at St Agnes Cemetery on September 12 in accordance with his wishes. His life will be celebrated at a memorial gathering on Saturday September 23 at St John's Episcopal Church on 129 Ledge Hill Rd, in Guilford at 11 in the morning.
