Arizona "Doanee" Cole Cooke, 89, of Richlands, Va. , passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at her home following an extended illness. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing. Doanee was born in Whitewood, Va. , on May 4, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Arthur "Butch" Cole and Viola Durham Cole both Whitewood, Va. , natives. She was Valedictorian of the Whitewood High School class of 1951. Doanee also attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. She enjoyed a career in banking from which she retired with nearly 50 years of service. She was a gracious hostess, who loved entertaining family and friends. She loved cooking, making candy, decorating and fancy attire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul "Dickie" Cooke; sisters, Venus Mullins and Gaynell Lawson; three infant siblings; one niece, Lindsay Payne and two nephews, Arthur Lawson and Joseph Dillon Smith. She is survived by her son, Brian Cooke and wife Janet of Richlands, Va. ; sister, Roberta Ritchie of Abingdon, Va. ; brother, Rev. Arlen Cook of Doran, Va. ; nephews, Joe Keith Smith and wife Gail of Pounding Mill, Va. , and Tanner Luke Smith and wife Nicole of Morgantown, WV; many special nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two special friends, Dorothy Morgan and Madeline Elswick. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of Legacy Hospice, Joann Horn and Brad Lawson for the loving care provided to Doanee. A private service for the family will be held at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. , at a later date. Nancy was born on August 3, 1948 in Tazewell County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Leander Thomas Hunnell and Nannie Lowe Hunnell. Nancy was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. She was the former owner and operator of JWalters and was a lifelong resident of the area. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. "Dean Hillman Henderson, age 74, of Richlands, VA, passed from this life into Heaven on Sunday, November 26, 2023 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Dean was born in Richlands, VA and was the son of the late Dr. Walter T. Henderson and Lois Fern Hillman Henderson. He attended Richlands High School and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in 1968. He graduated from Carson Newman College and later graduated from Virginia Tech with his Civil Engineering Degree. Dean was a former employee of the Tazewell County Public Service Authority, former Town Manager of Tazewell, VA, former Town Manager of Pocahontas, VA. He worked for the Virginia Department of Health as a district Environmental Engineer for 22 years, until his retirement. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was an animal lover and advocate. He loved to run heavy equipment. He was a member of the Richlands First Methodist Church and was a lifelong resident of the area. Dean loved his family and friends. "Charles "Chuck" Thomas Shinall, age 60, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of the late James H. Shinall and Helen Irene Sargent Shinall. Chuck was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1981 and SVCC Electrical Engineering Class of 1984. He was a retired I. T. Specialist for the Virginia State Police and was a past chief dispatcher for the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office. He was a volunteer fire and rescue member of several different agencies and was a past employee of Woody's and B\u0026amp;G Motors. At the time of his death, he was a part time worker for Weber City Discount Tire. He was a member of the Tazewell County Sportsman Club, life member of the Richlands Rescue Squad, honorary member of the Shawsville Rescue Squad, member of VAVRS, an EVOC instructor, and a VA EMT. He was a member and Master of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 AF\u0026amp;AM and a member and past Master of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF\u0026amp;AM. He loved to travel with his wife, Sharon. He loved cats. He loved to take train trips, especially on the Norfolk and Western J No. 611. Chuck loved fishing, shooting with the boys, people watching, meeting new people, training EVOC and EMT students, training state police and local officers, spending time at the casino, eating out, riding horses, and helping the Community Cats program with Tazewell County. Carolyn Lou VanDyke Adkins, age 66, of the Hurricane Creek section of Vansant, Virginia, passed away Sunday (November 19, 2023) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born March 27, 1957 in Richlands, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Delades Hess VanDyke. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed quilting, puzzles, and gardening, but most of all spending time with her family. Survivors include one daughter, Tracie Adkins and boyfriend, Greg Johnson; one son, Travis Adkins and girlfriend, Jamie Presley; two grandsons, Bentley Adkins and Maverick Adkins; two granddaughters, Lydia Presley and Katlin Rose -Johnson; one brother, Danny VanDyke and wife, Pam; one sister, Trish Stanley and husband, Bill; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Kabaria and the Staff of Clinch Valley Medical Center. Harvey Matney, Jr. age 76, of Grundy, Virginia, went to his Heavenly Home on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, Virginia. He was born on February 10, 1947, in Grundy, Virginia, and was the son of the late Harvey Matney and Elsie Blankenship Matney. Junior was a retired coal mining operator. He was a member of the New Hope Christian Church in Grundy, Virginia, and an Army Veteran having served in the Vietnam War. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He loved working in his yard and taking care of his beautiful roses. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Mullins and Faye Wolford; and five brothers, Henry Matney, Ernie Matney, Johnny Matney, Jamer Matney, and one infant brother. Junior is survived by his loving wife, Arlene Matney of fifty-five years of Grundy, Virginia; two sons, Rodney Matney and wife Carmella of Richlands, Virginia, and Chad Matney of Grundy, Virginia; one granddaughter, Katherine Thomas and husband Zach of Springboro, Ohio; two grandsons, Braxton Matney of Grundy, Virginia, and Cameron Matney of Grundy, Virginia; one brother, Teddy Matney of North Carolina; two sisters, Athalene Walker of Tennessee, and Wortha Crawford of Wardale, Virginia. "Jean Frances Spencer, age 84, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. She was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the daughter of the late John Hoops and Clara Caudill Hoops. She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area all of her life and was a retired school bus driver from Tazewell County Public Schools. She was a Richlands High School Class of 1957 graduate. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend and will always hold a special place in our hearts. She loved the Lord, Jesus, and may have been the first to popularize the phrase, "Prayer is more powerful than a nuclear bomb. " A matriarchal leader of her family, she was a powerful force ready to defend her loved ones from any who would cross them. Jean loved praying, going to church, spending time talking to her family and friends-either on the phone or in person. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Jean Keene and husband, Ronnie Keene; and sisters, Lela Manning, Margaret Bostic, Janie Bryant, and Priscilla Gail Maggard.
