Bonnie Marie Mitchell-Lunceford

Feb 17, 1943 - Feb 29, 2024

location-icon

Atlanta, GA

"Bonnie Marie Mitchell-Lunceford, age 81, of Atlanta, Georgia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 29, 2024, after a gallant battle with cancer. Bonnie was born at the Army hospital in Augusta, Georgia on February 17, 1943 before her dad was deployed overseas in World War II. She was a 1961 graduate of West Gwinnett High School (Norcross High) where she was a majorette and state champion in baton twirling. She also twirled at Georgia State University basketball games and was recruited by Georgia Tech to twirl at football games during the Bobby Dodd era. Bonnie retired from Delta Airlines after 35 years. She was an avid traveler and especially enjoyed snow skiing around the globe. Her dad, J.F. Mitchell, was a World War II veteran who survived the D-day landing at Omaha Beach. In honor of his service, she arranged a trip for her parents and traveled with them to Normandy. The trip was especially meaningful because they were able to visit the gravesite of his brother, J. Harold Mitchell, at the Normandy American Cemetery. Harold was killed in action during World War II. Bonnie loved dancing, especially Zydeco and Cajun. She taught dance and traveled around the country to various dance festivals. She and her husband, Mike, were active members of the Atlanta Cajun Zydeco Association. Bonnie is survived by her devoted and loving husband of seventeen years, Michael A. Lunceford; sister, Wanda Mitchell Clarke (Dwaine), niece, Jessica Clarke, all of Norcross, nephew, Mitchell Clarke (Alexa), and great niece and nephew, Tenley and Levi Clarke, of Jefferson, Georgia. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and J.F. Mitchell, grandparents, Chloe and Homer Humphries, Annis and Farris Mitchell, all of Norcross, Georgia. On Sunday, March 10, 2024, a Memorial Service to honor and celebrate the life of Bonnie Mitchell-Lunceford will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Mega Event Hall, 6025 Peachtree Pkwy., Peachtree Corners, Georgia 30092. The service will be officiated by Don Baggett, president of the Atlanta Cajun Zydeco Association. Friends will have the opportunity to share memories.
