STELLA LOUISE ( LOUIE ) MASON, age 69 of Niota, Tenn. left this world to be with our Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at Terra Bella in Athens, Tenn. She was a native of Monroe County, Tenn., resident most of her life of McMinn County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Willie Mason and Lorene Carroll and preceded in death by In Laws: Raymond and Elsie Mason, and Brother: Ricky Mason, She was a member of Niota United Methodist Church. She was a devoted wife and caregiver for many and loved her family and friends dearly. Louie was loved and cherished by many and will be deeply missed. She enjoyed going with her kids and grandkids to sporting events.. He retired from Bowater Paper as a millwright and was of the Baptist Faith. Charles Edward McNelley, age 86 of Athens, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 24, 2024. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was the son of the late Bert and Addie Franks McNelley. He was a member of Mt. Verd Baptist Church and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962. He was retired from Athens Bed Company after 34 years of service. He had a love for reading the bible, fishing and spending time at Watts Bar Lake. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Ruth McNelley and his brothers H.P., Sammie and Bobbie McNelley, and one sister Mary Francis McNelley Perry.Survivors ; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Alesia McNelley of Ten Mile, Tennessee; granddaughter and spouse, Brittany and Brian Saffles of Madisonville, Tennessee; Great grandson, Raylan Saffles;Graveside services will be 11:00 am Thursday, February 29, 2024, at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Martha Catherine Stafford passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024.Martha was born on February 27, 1932 in Giles County, Tennessee to William Luther and Ruby Claire Cooper Felker. She resided in Stockton Valley, Tennessee with her husband, Gene, until his passing. Together they raised six children on their family farm. A farm where they would later gather every Sunday after church for lunch with their many grandchildren and great grandchildren.Martha was a dedicated member of Stockton Valley Baptist Church, and regardless of the church event, you could always find her in "her" spot on her favorite pew. She most enjoyed doting on her large family and many dear friends, perfecting her beautiful yard, and preparing food for anyone in the community that needed a home cooked meal. Martha was blessed to spend her last year at Morning Pointe of Athens in her room with a view where she was loved on by the staff, and where she made many good friends. Martha is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Stafford and son, Larry Stafford. Her parents William Luther and Ruby Claire Cooper Felker, brother Glen Felker, and sisters Joyce Miles, Anna B. Mize, and Geraldine Leaf. Martha is survived by her daughter Jane (Richard) Cunningham, sons Don (Nancy) Stafford, Michael (Mary Lynn) Stafford, Bill (Jody) Stafford, Charles (Jenny) Stafford, and her daughter-in-law Ann Stafford. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren Jennifer Pinkston, Joshua Stafford, Kelly McGraw, Kerrie Cunningham, Brent Stafford, Emily Perry, Tyler Stafford, Aubrey Kilby, Ross Stafford, Laura Roberts, Rachel Kraft, and Elizabeth Crowder as well as her 26 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Monday, February 19, 2024 at Loudon Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow with Rev. Tony Brock and Rev. Tim Watson officiating. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eula and Harley Waters; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Ted Rogers; sister, Nancy White; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Larry Brandham; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary Ada and James Pointer. She is survived by son, Robert Pointer, Jr.(Patsy) of Knoxville; daughter Suzan Stewart (Michael) of Etowah; grandsons, Spencer Sullivan, Jacob Pointer, Noah Pointer, and Stephen Stewart; granddaughter, Callie Stewart; and several nieces and nephews. Kevin Shane Winters, 43, of Athens, passed away Monday, February 12, 2024 at his home. He was a native of Greenville, Mississippi and longtime resident of McMinn County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cheryl Renee McDaniel Winters and his grandparents. He was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church in Athens. Above all Kevin was a devoted father and husband to his wife Dyan and their children, Elizabeth, Henry and Charlotte and a lifelong friend to many. A national award winning educator, Kevin was currently employed as a Senior Specialist with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. Kevin was known by his friends and colleagues to have a passion for helping his students be successful. Kevin was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan University and later earned his Master's degree from Tennessee Tech University. Kevin had numerous hobbies and especially loved Volunteer football. He will be greatly missed by friends, family, students, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dyan Winters of Athens; children, Elizabeth Winters, Henry Winters, and Charlotte Winters. two brothers, Richard Cox and Scottie (Sherri Jo) Cox; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Robin and John Allen; special aunt and uncle, Terri and Stan Goodner; and many loving cousins and friends. Vernon Owen Carroll, 90, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of McMinn County and was a son of the late Walter Lewis and Beatrice Wattenbarger Carroll. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Eula Keaton, Zelda Hyde, Toni Richardson, and Catherene Lunsford and an infant sister Mildred Carroll, and a brother, Lewis (Sonny) Carroll. He was a very kind and gentle man, wonderful husband and father. He enjoyed volunteering at the McMinn County Rescue Squad in the 70's for over 10 years, tinkering with anything that could be tinkered with and he did enjoy his ice cream. He was associated with the Beaunit Corporation, Fisher Hosiery Mill, Athens Hosiery Mill, Niota Textile Knitting Mill and Tennessee Hosiery Mill as a knitting machine technician until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nellie Johnson Carroll; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Rick Crabtree and Julie and Pat Lee; grandson, Thomas Lee; and great-grandson, Burgess Lee. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024 at McMinn Memory Gardens with Rev. John Porter officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Home from 12:30-1:45 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024 prior to the graveside service. William Harold Ammons

William Harold Ammons, 91, of Athens, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024, at Starr Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong native of McMinn County and was the son of the late James Lee and Grace Carroll Ammons. He was also preceded in death by his wife Monteene Webb Ammons, his sister Rozelle Ammons Sliger, and his sister-in-law Dorothy Dockery Ammons. He was a member of East Athens Baptist Church for over 70 years serving in many positions. He was a 1950 graduate of McMinn County High School and joined the U. S. Air Forceafter graduation. He served at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska, until his discharge in 1955. He was associated with Bowater for nearly 40 years in the Technical Department and Recycle until his retirement. He is survived by a daughter, Trina Ammons; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Melissa Ammons; granddaughter and her husband, Alisha and Will Robinson; grandson, Aaron Ammons; great-granddaughter, Violet Rose Robinson; and one brother, Charles Elbert Ammons. A funeral service will be conducted, 7:00 PM, on Monday, January 29, 2024 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Dannel officiating. The committal service will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 30, at McMinn Memory Gardens with Rev. Jason Robertson officiating, military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday prior to the service. He loved watching car racing and wrestling on TV, fishing, and listening to music. Herman served in the United States army as an infantryman in the Korean Conflict.
