Walter Yelvington
Age - 62
August 11, 2022
Mr. Walter Ray Yelvington, 62, of Wausau, FL, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 12, 1959 to Elbert and Helen Yelvington. Mr. Yelvington attended Mosley High School before joining the United States Army, where he proudly served as a motor transport operator. After returning home, he continued what would turn out to be a 35-year career as an over-the-road truck driver. He was determined to give his family everything, even if it meant he had to miss a few things, and never complained. Mr. Yelvington loved cooking and spending time keeping traditions alive such as Sunday dinner. So, you can almost bet every holiday or birthday he was cooking something for someone, if not the whole family. He also loved to read and was passionate about politics. He could win a debate with anyone who was brave enough to have one with him. He could truly do anything from carpentry, to working on cars, to brick masonry, and could usually be found "piddling" in his shed or spoiling his grandchildren rotten. It was amazing how endless his knowledge of everything was. He was rarely wrong and if he was, he could still probably convince you he was right. More than anything he was an AMAZING fiance, father, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend, but as amazing as he was, he surprised everyone and turned out to be an even better Grandpa. He did everything in his power to make sure his family was safe and taken care of and would stand toe to toe with anyone over them, if he had to, and sometimes even if he didn't, or shouldn't, have. But those who knew and loved him the most, knew underneath that giant "6'3", 250 pounds of solid steal and sex appeal, every man's nightmare and every woman's dream" (his words, not ours), he was a big ol' softy, and would do anything he could for anyone he knew and sometimes people he didn't know. We will forever miss his giant ego and sense of humor, but most of all his big heart and determination. Mr. Yelvington is preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Donna Yelvington and brother-in-law, Joe Story. He is survived by his fiance, Sandra Rogers of Wausau, FL; daughter, Kayla Ranow of Youngstown, FL; son, Jason Yelvington of Panama City, FL; step-son, Justin and his wife Jaime Hammock of Freeport, FL; grandchildren, Ryleigh Ranow (Grandpa's Girly-Girl) and Carter Gouge (Grandpa's Carter-Man); brother, Donald Yelvington; sister, Cheryl Story; ex-wife, Tina Hughen and her husband, Tony Hughen; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends he considered family . Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. , Monday, August 15, 2022 at Southerland Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Southport Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Justin Hammock, Matthew Quattlebaum, Logan Quattlebaum, Shawn Shepard, Frank Walker, and Joel Sullivan. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p. m. prior to the service. Come dressed as you are, that is how he wanted it.Show more
