Sharon Koberstein

Sharon Koberstein

Age - 82

December 10, 2023

Sharon Koberstein (Crewdson), 82, passed away after a full life and with family and friends by her side on December 5, 2023. Sharon was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada on August 2, 1941 to John and Bessie (Calhoun) Crewdson. She was 5 years younger than her only sibling, brother Robert. Sharon spent her first years in the beautiful port city of St. John, New Brunswick. When she was 12, the family immigrated to the United States and settled in upstate New York. Her first years of college were spent at Keuka College in the finger lakes region where she made a group of friends that she stayed in touch with throughout her life. It was during these years that her future sister-in-law, Anne Koberstein, introduced her to Robert (Bob) Koberstein after church, who told Anne that she was "the most beautiful woman he had ever seen". Bob was in medical school and determined to woo Sharon. The oft-told story is that as a medical student Bob had little money to take Sharon out so would donate his blood plasma in order to take her to dinner. He was clearly willing to do anything to win her heart! They married on June 17, 1961, in Syracuse, NY, just after Bob graduated from medical school. They began their life together which took them from Buffalo, NY, to Oakland, California where their son David was born, to Big Spring, Texas where their daughter Jennifer was born (and Sharon graduated from Texas Tech), to Salisbury, Maryland, and then to Elyria, Ohio where their last child Amy was born. From there they went to Appleton, WI where they continued to raise their three children. The family spent 16 happy years in Appleton, with many trips to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with friends. Sharon was active in Appleton volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Kings Daughters, the medical auxiliary and her children's schools, among other organizations. She and the family joined the First Congregational Church which became a central part of their life in Appleton. Sharon was a consummate homemaker and somehow managed to help so many while also making many holiday traditions and keeping a wonderful home for her husband and children. She was also a knitter, and made beautiful sweaters for her husband, children, and eventually her children's partners. You knew you were welcomed into the family when you got a sweater! Sharon and Bob moved to Frankenmuth, MI in 1986 when Bob left private practice for the VA Hospital in Saginaw. While Sharon missed her many friends in Appleton dearly, she was always outgoing and easily made many new ones in Michigan. Two groups that she joined, which meant so much to her were P. E. O. , a philanthropic organization supporting women, and her Tuesday Study Group, which explored spirituality. Her husband Bob passed away in 2001 and Sharon moved to Saginaw where some of her friends lived. Eventually she became good friends and a partner to Richard (Dick) Hausler, who passed away in 2017. Sharon was known for her beauty, her positive outlook and strength, the unconditional love and support she always gave to her children, and especially for her sense of style and fashion. She always looked put together! Sharon is survived by her three children, David (Kris Hauck), Jennifer (Anthony Roda) and Amy (Peter Tatarian). She also leaves six grandchildren, Robert Koberstein, Nicholas, Elizabeth and Caroline Roda, and Benjamin and Alex Segal, as well as her sister-in-law Anne Koberstein, her niece Lois Strong and her nephew John Crewdson. A Celebration of Sharon's Life will take place at 11:00 a. m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church, 121 S. Harrison St. Saginaw, MI 48602. Officiating will be Pastor Ted McCulloch. Visitation will take place at church, on Saturday, from 10:00 a. m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial to "First Presbyterian Church, 121 S. Harrison St. Saginaw, MI 48602" or "P. E. O.
