Ann Burrus Fulcher Richter, aka "Annie B. ," passed away peacefully in her home in Virginia Beach on Thursday, June 16. Ann said she wanted a simple obituary, yet for those who knew her she was anything but. Ann was born in Elizabeth City, NC, August 2, 1940. From an early age, Ann was driven. At 18 years old, she moved out to Seattle, WA, where she attended Skagit Valley College, then worked as a data professor for Shell Oil Company, studied voice and opera lessons at the Student Studio for Speech and Drama, and pursued a notable theater career. Ann performed in a number of off-Broadway shows and sang professionally as a cabaret singer under the stage name "Ann Blake" in Pioneer Square. Her passion for performing continued when Ann moved to Norfolk, VA. She sang for local on-air events and played the leads in several theater productions, earning her critical praise. In her review for "Stop the World I Want to Get Off," the late Mal Vincent, Virginia Beach's popular theater critic, remarked, "Fulcher Richter is a revelation in her role as Evie. . . I have seldom been so satisfied in a musical comedy femine performance. " Simultaneously, Ann balanced a career working for mortgage banking firm Cameron-Brown, which later became First Union, in Norfolk, VA. She managed the accounting, traveled the east coast to open offices, and hired and trained people, all areas in which she thrived. During this time, she met the love of her life, the late Allen G. Richter. Ann and Allen were happily married for just shy of 50 years. She would always say, "Allen and I had a true love story that lasted right up until the very end. " Among her many other pursuits, Ann briefly co-operated Milton's Pizza in Raleigh, NC, worked at Margot's, a designer clothing store, in Virginia Beach, and eventually, she and Allen started their own business, Richter Realty Company, Inc. Though a self-professed introvert, Ann had a profound way of engaging with the world around her and left a deep impression on everyone who was lucky enough to know her. She often referred to herself as a "great conversationalist" - and she really was. She read the daily newspaper, cover to cover, so she was always up-to-date on current events and could talk with anyone about any topic, from finances to sports to one of her favorite subjects, the arts. Ann always took an interest in other people, and she had a way of making each person she met feel like the most important person in the world. She had a quick wit and recently said, with a dramatic gesture of her hand, "I'm going to be an actress right up until my last breath. I'm the gift that keeps on giving. "Most of all though, Ann was deeply devout in her faith, demonstrating an unparalleled strength and resilience in both mind and body, and inspiring everyone she met with her kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. Her favorite place on earth was walking on the Boardwalk, which she did - rain or shine - up to three miles a day mere months before she passed. No doubt Ann is walking circles around everyone in Heaven now. Ann was preceded in death by her sisters Fran Davenport and Libbie Husser. Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Jennifer Leigh Richter, siblings Tay Davenport, Octavius "O. C. " Coke Fulcher, and Dottie Anderson, nieces Margy Shea, Melissa Davenport, Angela Messer, Margie Fulcher Suggs, Marilyn Wahl, Stacy Young, as well as many other loving extended family members and dear friends. Following a private graveside burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA, a celebration of Ann's life will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday June 22, 2022 at The Ocean House in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, Ann encourages loved ones wishing to make a memorial donation to give to the charity of their choice. H. D.
