It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ann Manning, 81, of Baylors Lake, PA, on Monday, October 2, 2023. Ann grew up on Manning Farm Dairy. She was a 1959 graduate from Abington Heights and a 1963 graduate from St. Michael's University, Toronto. Upon graduation, Ann moved to California where she worked at UCLA and Santa Monica Medical Centers. She worked there for 10 years and made many lifelong friends. Ann returned home in 1973 and started working at Community Medical Center (now known as GCMC) in Scranton and focused on trauma and emergency care. During her time there, she was also named as the Lackawanna County Coordinator for the county's basic life support training program for Emergency Medical Technicians. A few years later, she began working with the University of Scranton Training Project in an effort to train paramedics, emergency room physicians, trauma nurses and other emergency personnel. Ann was tasked with creating the curriculum and following through with the vision to make the program a success. She also was a former member of the Board of Directors of Emergency Medical Services. Ann dedicated her time at CMC to making trauma coordination an integral part of the care patients were receiving from beginning to end. After her retirement from CMC, Ann worked at Marion Community Hospital in Carbondale and Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. Ann was well traveled. She loved going to new places and reading and researching the destination before she got there. Her favorite spots to travel were to Yugoslavia and Ireland. Ann was an avid sports fan. She was a lifelong Notre Dame Football and Pittsburgh Steelers fan! She was always wearing something to represent the Irish. When either of these teams was playing, Ann was glued to the tube to watch. When she wasn't watching sports, she loved to sit and watch the lake. It was her special place. Ann had a very close relationship with her nieces and nephews at Zickview. That special relationship spilled over into her wonderful relationship with her great-nieces and nephews. "Auntie Ann" was always spoiling her "greats" with gingersnap cookies before a meal. There was not a holiday that went by without Aunt Ann's lemon cheesecake and gingersnaps. Very few were lucky enough to get a cheesecake as a gift at Christmas. Ann's pure love of medicine was with her to the end. She was diagnosing issues and people from her bed even as a patient herself. Ann was predeceased by her parents; Kenneth and Louise Manning, sister; Irene Basalyga; brothers; John Manning and James Manning. She was also predeceased by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces. She is survived by her sisters; Alice Kushner, Elizabeth Ellenburg, and Carol Zick; her brothers; Paul Manning and Robert Manning; numerous nieces and nephews as well as many great-nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Geisinger Community Medical Center for their efforts in her last few days. Ann reconnected with many people that she had trained at one point in time. It was truly a homecoming for her. The funeral will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 10:30 a. m. from Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 18 Airport Road, Clifford, PA. Interment, St. Patrick's Cemetery, Nicholson, PA. For those who cannot attend in-person the funeral will be live streamed from the funeral home's website.
