David was always charismatic; a rare blend of intellect and quick wit, with an insatiable zest for life. This was exemplified though his myriad of interests and hobbies ranging from swimming competitively as a youth to obtaining his private pilot's license as an adult. David was also an avid bowler, spending a multitude of time coaching novices at Jordan Lanes in Allentown. He enjoyed golfing, boating, skiing, and camping. David was a basketball enthusiast and held season tickets for the Philadelphia 76ers for several years. David took immense pride in being a dependable son, a reliable, encouraging brother, and a present and available father and Opa. His vibrant, outgoing personality, generosity, and crude sense of humor will be missed by many. David was predeceased by his father, Lester I. Edith Butz

Edith Butz

Age - 100

December 6, 2023

Edith Vivian (Helmer) Butz passed away peacefully in her home on December 5, 2023. She had celebrated her 100th birthday in April. Edie was born at home on a small farm in Penn Forest Township, PA, to Frank E. and Sadie F. (Dotter) Helmer. She had eight siblings, who along with their parents, have been waiting patiently to see her again. Her sisters were Erma Schlegel, Althea Beers, Ellen "June" Dotter and Myrtle Butz. Her brothers were Martin, Gordon, Albert and Charles Helmer. A visit "out home" last year was so heartwarming, as she was able to stand in the same room where she had taken her first breath, 99 years earlier. It's a very special place. Edie was married to Austin E. Roth in 1941, and together they had 3 children - Geraldine M. (Roth) Barlip was their first born, followed by Marlene F. Roth and Austin E. "Buzzy" Roth, II. She shared a very close, special bond with all of her children. Sadly, she was predeceased by Marlene and Buzzy, who left us too soon. Geraldine has been an integral part of Edie's life through all the happy times, laughter and taking care of her needs during these last years. Edie remarried later in life to Raymond E. Butz, and gained not only a loving husband, but also stepchildren - Barry, Brian and Dave Butz and Linda (Butz) Held. In her 100 years, Edie led an amazing life. Through ups and downs, good times and bad, she always had positive words of wisdom to share. She was a strong and independent woman who took care of us all. Her wonderful sense of humor was contagious! If she was trying to pull a funny on us, we could always tell right away by her "humor eyes. " That little glint that showed she was up to something. During WWII, she was not only a civil defense leader, but helped the war effort by making blankets for the troops. She became a girl scout leader as well and did many things for the community. She was later employed as a waitress and a seamstress, but also as a caregiver. She loved to travel, and her pride and joy was her garden. She had the greenest thumb! Surviving in addition to her daughter Geri and stepchildren are her precious grandchildren (6), great-grandchildren (8), great-great-grandchildren (5), many nieces and nephews. Services: A funeral service will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, December 10, 2023 in the K. V. Knopp Funeral Home, 46 E. Susquehanna Street, Allentown. A viewing will be held from 2 PM until the time of the service.Show more
