Janet Slater

Janet Slater

Age - 72

August 18, 2023

SLATER, Janet K. Kalamazoo, MI Janet was born on December 22, 1950 in Alma, MI to Phil and Erma Stone. She spoke often of her early childhood up north playing with all of her cousins at family get togethers while the grownups played cards out on the porch. She was always something of a country girl at heart, loving its openness where she could have a garden and smell the fresh country air. When the family moved to Lansing Janet was only six. They lived at 1038 Morgan St. , close enough for her to walk to all the schools she attended. She graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1969, and chose to attend U. of M. because, one, it got her out of Lansing and two, it was very liberal and that's what she wanted back then as a political science major. She thought she would eventually go into politics but that would all change in time. During this period, she worked as a legal secretary and a secretary in the State House of Representatives which is where we met in September of 1971. I was a carpet cleaner just finishing up at state and she was working in order to go back to U. of M. , she never did. We were married on September 1, 1972 and she took a job in the corporate world with PANAX Corporation. I taught special education at Beekman Training Center in Lansing and we, for a year, were house parents to seven special needs men who trained at Beekman. But in 1976 everything changed. God called me into the ministry and shortly thereafter, Janet accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. In a heartbeat, Janet was transformed from a liberal, feminist politician into a Christian wife and devoted mother who loved going to church, loved reading the Bible and loved God. Then, for some 20 years, she served on the board of the Delton Women's Center ministering to troubled women with the love and grace of Christ. For 18 years, she was Doster Church's secretary, serving the Lord and bringing so much kindness into so many lives. This would be the most important thing she would want said in her obituary: Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Him. That was her confidence and her certain hope. Today, she is more alive in heaven then she ever could be here on Earth. Because of her faith, Janet possessed great joy and peace no matter what may come. In 1979, the first of her other great loves was born, our son, Steven Philip on March 28 (m. Casey Norton); then our daughter, Emily Catherine on May 6, 1981 (m. Koji Murata); our second daughter Hannah Lynn on January 28, 1984 (m. Shahid Kahn). We also have two incredible grandsons in Japan, Miles (14) and Theloheous Murata. No blessing on earth even comes close to what our children and grandsons have meant to Janet. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Erma Stone; and her younger brother Marty who also succumbed to cancer in 2021. He too is greatly missed. Janet's sister Pat McWilliams and her husband Jack live in Tallahassee, FL. Her brother Ron Stone and his wife Judy live near Ithaca, MI. They and their families are all loved so much by all of us. A very special thanks goes to our sister-in-law, Janice Slater from Traverse City who, along with Dr. Stephen Dallas, carefully and lovingly did all they could to minister to Janet's every need. May god richly bless them both. Janet's funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, August 19, 2023 11:00 AM at Delton Community Church. Pastor Mike McCrumb will officiate. Burial will take place on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 10:00 AM in North Star Cemetery in Ithaca, MI. Memorial donations to Hope Builders Ministries, 116 S. Dartmouth St. , Kalamazoo, MI 49006. David Enders

David Enders

Age - 73

August 9, 2023

David Enders: Feb. 13, 1950 - Aug. 7, 2023 David Lee Enders of Middleville, age 73, is at peace after passing away in the early morning hours of August 7, 2023. Dave was born February 13, 1950 in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Romans) Enders. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1968 and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Friends and family were one and the same with Dave. He gathered with them around a dining room table for the next hand of setback or whatever the card game of the moment was. He was in the living room to cheer on the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons and Lions with anyone who would fill the seats beside him. He kept up the pool that his nieces and nephews splashed in even long after his sons had grown and moved out. He loved a day at the beach. All of those types of activities swirled in the smell of the campfire at one of his family's regular state park visits. Dave and his family and friends have an annual fall outing that fills nearly a dozen sites in Ludington. Dave married his wife Sue (Bremer) in November of 1975 and the two lived and loved in Middleville throughout their 47 and a half years together. The couple had two sons: Brad and Brian. Dave coached them in youth baseball and AYSO soccer. He was a devoted husband, father and family man. Dave could be kind, stern, loving and humorous as called for. His was a humor that skillfully combined the art of deception with the guffaw of a classic "dad joke. " He could be a practical joker at home and at the office. He could always make his granddaughters laugh, "cha, cha, cha!" There was always room in his heart and his basement for a son's friend or a family member who needed sanctuary for a time as they transitioned through life's ups and downs. Dave was a member of the Middleville United Methodist Church and happy to serve the Lord and his community through the United Methodist Men. He spent 25 years as the shipping foreman at Yamaha Musical in Grand Rapids directing drum kits to musicians and marching bands around the globe. Dave is survived by his wife Sue Enders; his sons Brad (Melissa) Enders and Brian (Lynn Smith) Enders; his brother Robert (Michael Ann) Enders; grandchildren Eve and Thea Enders; and many nieces and nephews. Jennifer Chmielewski

Age - 53

August 2, 2023

On July 31, 2023, Jennifer F. Chmielewski (age 53) went to be with the Lord, after succumbing to cancer. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. The immediate family would like to express sincere gratitude for the love and support during her final days. Jenny was born July 14, 1970, in Plainwell Michigan, and is preceded in death by her parents; Beatrice (Olivarri) Chmielewski and Anthony Chmielewski, nephew Lucas Pinks, and stepbrother Wayne Gilbert. She is survived by her sisters; Annette Pinks, Laurita Chmielewski, Lisa Doss, and Yolanda Chmielewski. As the youngest sister, she was pampered (in the best way possible) and naturally everyone looked after her, but no one watched out for her like her big sisters did. The great lengths her sisters took to make sure she was safe, happy, and healthy, were like no other and their close bond will always be cherished. We remember her today and always as a fun-loving sister, dear friend, and cool "Aunt Jenny" to nieces; Lauren DeJager, Lindsey Hysell-Bonge, Monica Tufts, and nephews; Tony Pinks, Troy (TJ) Risner, Kyle Chmielewski, and Jeffery Rayos. She adored and spoiled her great nieces Brooke, Nora, Blair and great nephews, Carter, Anthony, Jordan, and Brock. She is also survived by stepsister Susan Siderakis, Aunt's Pam and Della, Uncle Roger, and many cousins that were not only family, but amazing friends. Jenny graduated from Delton Kellogg High School. Later, she graduated from a local medical billing and coding school where she worked as a teacher's aide and loved it. As a free spirit, she later traveled the United States and worked in various customer service positions such as Michael's crafts, waitressing, and bartending. She enjoyed spending time with family and brought joy around with her infectious laugh and light- hearted energy and humor. She loved doing arts and crafts and gifted her crafts as an expression of love and creativity. She loved the beach, her cat Willie, British culture, making special memories with family, scoring a deal while shopping, and "baking". We will cherish our memories and the time we were blessed with Jenny. A memorial service is scheduled Thursday, August 3 rd at 1:00pm to celebrate Jenny's life at Williams Gores Funeral Home located at 133 E. Orchard St. , Delton, MI 49046. Visitation will begin at 12:00pm. A luncheon will be held following at the Orangeville Township Hall located at 7350 Lindsey Road. Robert Young

Robert Young

Age - 72

July 3, 2023

Robert Glenn Young, "Bob" (72) died Saturday, July 1, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 3, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan. A son of Robert Peacock and Shirley Minich, he grew up in New Mexico before moving back to Michigan and attending Comstock High School. Bob's first jobs included working in an art gallery and a bakery. During high school, he began working in construction and took a specific interest in building residential homes. In his younger years, he met the love of his life, Brenda. He travelled around the United States building homes (and even a brief stint as a logger in Oregon) with primarily the same "crew" of friends--who themselves became family. Bob and Brenda spent many years living in Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon, Florida, and California. Along the way, their two sons were born (Jesse and Jakob) in Oregon. In 1985, they moved back to Kalamazoo, Michigan and had a daughter (Jennifer). Once the boys were old enough, Bob created Young & Sons Construction and taught them everything he knew. Over the next 12 years, he also hired many of his sons' friends and taught them important life skills. Bob had a huge heart and loved his family. He attended nearly all of his kids' sporting events; he maintained almost daily contact with his brother, Roger, who lives in Florida; but above all else was his love for Brenda, his wife of 50 years. He was a loyal and dedicated friend to many. He always did things his own way, had a unique sense of humor, and was known for telling grand tales of his life's adventures. He was also an avid fisherman, loved saltwater fishing, and often jokingly referred to himself as "The Great White Hunter. " Bob is survived by his wife, Brenda; children Jesse, Jakob, and Jennifer (David); brother, Roger (Debra); niece Courtney (Jose); and grandchildren Micah, Kalynn, McKinley, Elise, Kinsley, Emilia, and Everly. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Kendon. Cremation has taken place and Bob's family will receive friends on Friday, July 14, 2023 from 10:00-11:00 a. m. at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home, where his service will take place at 11:00 a. m.
