Sylvia Hinojosa

Sylvia Hinojosa

Age - 92

December 8, 2023

Our mother Sylvia Hinojosa, age 92, passed away at her home on Tuesday, December 5, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sylvia was born in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, on August 24, 1931, to Refugio Carranco and Maria Morales and migrated to the United States in 1946. She married Pablo Hinojosa in 1948 and moved to the community of Santa Monica on the outskirts of Lyford. She dedicated her life to her family, raising nine children while overseeing the household. She was also a devout and active member of the Santa Monica Catholic Church of Lyford. The holiday season was always her favorite, and she especially enjoyed participating in las posadas. Throughout her life, Sylvia was the gravitational center of the family and loved to be surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. No one will ever forget the mischievous twinkle in her eyes or the stare that could stop you in your tracks. And all can attest to the laughter and sense of humor that made her unique. She expressed joy and love through the wonderful food she prepared for her family and friends. This legacy includes the countless dishes she perfected throughout the years. We will always remember her homemade tamales, roast beef, flour tortillas, carne guisada, bean tacos, caldo de res, and, not least, the Mexican rice which no one has been able to match. Mom gave and received so much kindness and love during her life, and we want to thank those who treated her with the same compassion. We want to extend a special thank you to her caregiver, Lety Bingham, who won Mom's heart, took her on many adventures, and will always be part of the family. We were blessed to have Janeida Hernandez care for mom in her final months, and who brought so much humor and joy. We couldn't have hoped for a better team than Dr. Eduardo Uribe, the nurses, and staff at Valley Baptist Family Practice Residency. Their guidance and care kept her strong to the end. She is survived by her children, Pablo (Sylvia) Hinojosa, Josie (Robert) Centilli, Blanca (Raul) Guerra, Eduardo "Wally" Hinojosa, Florinda (Sonny) Correa, Mike (Annette) Hinojosa, Frances (Mike), Roberto (Warren) Hinojosa, Martha (David) Hinojosa, grandchildren: Sandra Vera, Michael P. She is preceded in death by her husband, Pablo Hinojosa, her sister, Guadalupe Carranco-Perez, brothers Refugio Carranco and Juan Carranco. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023, from 1 P. M. until 9 P. M. with a rosary at 7 P. M. at Good Shepherd Funeral Home. All services will conclude at 9 P. M. Virginia Sowers

Virginia Sowers

Age - 94

November 14, 2023

"Virginia (Ginny) Sowers went home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 2, 2023 after a six month illness at the age of 94. Ginny was preceded in death by her husband Skeeter Sowers, a daughter Beth Sowers, a son-in-law Bob Smith, a son-in-law Ed Landry, sister Elizabeth Ross, and her brother Leroy Ross. Ginny is survived by her daughters, Sue (Gordon) Means, Ruth (Russell) Klostermann, Brenda (Hank) Landry, Linda Landry, and Norma (Dan) Klostermann. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Virginia was a member of the First Baptist Church in Raymondville her whole adult life where she was an active member of the choir until she moved to Harlingen. Ginny began singing at an early age and sang in numerous Easter and Christmas Cantatas at First Baptist Church. In the absence of a choir director, Mom would lead the singing. We will always remember her singing "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Virginia was an employee of the Raymondville School District for 35 years as a secretary at the RISD cafeteria keeping school lunch program records. Mom had a deep love for all children and we seldom went anywhere that former students would recognize her and come and give her a hug. Mom had a knack for never meeting a stranger and would start a conversation with anyone. Mom spent her life loving being a vital part of her children and grandchildren's lives. In her later years she enjoyed going on several cruises with her daughters. Ginny also loved being able to watch her grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren play sports. She was known lovingly by her grandchildren as "Mamaw Normie". Ginny had many extended family members throughout her life. She has had a special extended family the last four years while at Spear Home. The family will be forever grateful for Kenny and Lisa Salazar, Olga Gutierrez, Elvia Livingston, Bianca Zuniga, Maria De La Rosa, Yolanda Hernandez, and Tommy Aleo. Please know that she loved all of you and thought of you as family. The family also is so grateful for Gentivia Hospice and especially Lupita Cortez, mom's guardian angel RN who has taken such good care of her during her time in hospice. We will miss Mom dearly but we know she is singing with the angelical choir and being with our dad and sister. We know from God's promise that we will see her again. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. " John 3: 16. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church's \u0026quot;Backpacks of Love Program\u0026quot;, 602 Morgan Blvd. , Harlingen, Texas 78550 or a memorial of your choice.
