"Santiago "Chico" Jose Navarro de Vega, age 80 of Porter, IN passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. He was born on December 27, 1942 in East Chicago, IN to Jose and Carmen (Vega) Navarro. Chico is survived by his daughter, Marcia "Bella" Navarro; his son, Martin (Rachel) Navarro; his daughter, Poppy-Ann (Brian) Carden; two brothers, Eliseo Navarro, Joseph Navarro; 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marcia Lee (Stephenson) Navarro; two sons, James Joseph Navarro, Jr. , Jeffrey Navarro; father, Jose Navarro; mother, Carmen Navarro; and brother, Adolf Navarro. Chico was unforgettable. His adventures and personality always preceded him, lighting up a room with laughter, and the path he blazed for his family continued to burn for generations. He was a "legend" among those who knew him, and his family members are still hard pressed to go anywhere in northwest Indiana without someone yelling, "Hey, I know Chico!" Chico was beloved by his family, especially by his late wife, Marcia, who he cherished with his whole heart. A storyteller, a comedian, and a philosopher, Chico's sharp wit always sliced to the center of a conversation. He was often found playing digital golf, a game of cribbage, or a crossword puzzle, and he loved to try new hobbies and collect oddities that he could "use later"--for Chico, pockets were always meant to be filled. When he wasn't busy in his "man cave," he was almost always watching the Cubs. A collector of experiences, including traveling abroad on a moment's notice, the stories told about Chico are often unbelievable while being wholly and entirely true. To say that he will be missed is an understatement. A grandfather, a father, a brother, a friend, and a ranchero, Chico was one of a kind. As you remember him, be sure to remember the laughs and leave a seat at your cribbage table for him. Funeral Ceremony will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 1:00 pm until the time of the service at 3:00 pm at the funeral home. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home. "Show more
