Derby, VT

Alicia Knoll, Everyone's NanaAlicia Vernon Knoll of Derby, VT, died Sunday, September 3 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She was 75. To know her was to love her remarked a close friend at the news of her passing which was a sentiment echoed by friends locally and as far as New Zealand. She was a true lady who meant more to so many than the following words can describe. She was born to humble beginnings in Waycross, GA, the daughter of a mechanic and an artist and she moved to Jacksonville, FL, as a child, which would be her home for 45 years. Her adventurous spirit was on display at an early age when she borrowed her parents' mustang and drove across state lines only to be pulled over by a Georgia police officer who didn't appreciate her sass. She was put in a holding pen to await the local judge but decided to slip out an unlocked window and wait further in the police officer's vacant chair. The judge and cop were none too pleased and thankfully her parents were able to send the large fine via Western Union to secure her release. At 21, she met her future husband, Frank Knoll, who had stopped to use her parents' phone on his way to another date. It was just one of the many lovely and incredible coincidences that marked her life and three months later at the 1969 Apalachicola Oyster Festival she agreed to marry him. At the wedding ceremony in Thomasville, GA, a less than fully sober justice of the peace presided over their nuptials at one point asking an empty courthouse if there were any objections. When her now husband asked the Judge if the ceremony had been legal, he remarked, "well son if this ain't legal then there are a lot of bastards here in Thomas County. " So began Alicia and Frank's love story which lasted over 53 years. Alicia returned to Jacksonville, and she joined her new husband in England while he studied for his Master's degree and where she attended London Polytechnic College. At the completion of their studies, she and Frank joined a fellow graduate student from New Zealand and bicycled across Europe, sleeping in farmer's fields and enjoying the scenery of France, Portugal, and Spain. It began what would be a constant theme in her life-traveling to new places and always making new friends along the way. One of those places was Vermont in the 70s, which charmed them both but was beyond their means at the time. But the seed of attraction for the Green Mountain state was planted. Five years later in Jacksonville, she welcomed her first child, Felix, and four years after that her second son, Garrett. She was made to be a mother. With her husband Frank traveling around the world for work, she took charge in raising the boys and made good friends with their neighbors. Some of the neighborhood kids would stop by her house first to say hi before heading to their homes after school. She, Frank, and the boys continued to travel and find adventures. In the winters, when the boys were old enough, the family started traveling on annual ski trips to Colorado, where her hot pink ski jacket crisscrossed the powdered slopes. In the summers the family would return to Colorado for a few weeks each year, including one trip where her husband was driving perilously close to the edge of an unfenced mountain pass. Terrified, and unsuccessful in getting Frank to drive more safely, Alicia turned to the boys and commanded, "Your Father's lost his mind, get ready to jump. " Back in Jacksonville,

ObituaryDean A, Palin, 99, of Derby, VT passed away on November 12, 2023, in Lyndon Center, VT. He was born September 20, 1924, on the family farm, a stone's throw from the Canadian border in Derby Line, to the late Arthur and Mildred (Gray) Palin. On November 13, 1954, he married his dear "Janie," Janice Gray, who survives him. They were married for one day short of 69 years. They lived for over 60 years in their little red brick home in Derby where they raised three children. Every summer, Dean and Jan packed up the kids and headed to their beloved camp on Seymour Lake. The crystal-clear water of Seymour cooled him off many nights after a long, hot day in the hay field. At night, Mom and Dad held court as a multitude of family and friends dropped in to visit at the green camp. Dean was a 1942 graduate of Derby Academy where he was voted Senior Class President. He served in the U. S. Army enlisting after WWII. He returned home to work on the family farm and dairy with his parents and brother Jim, delivering milk throughout the county as A. S. Palin and Sons. In the late 1940s they moved to a farm in Newport City and built a brand-new modern dairy in 1950 known as Elmwood Dairy which they owned and operated for many years. In addition to operating the dairy, he helped operate the family jersey farm. In addition to his time working at the farm and dairy, he found time to use his other talents. He was very musical and loved to sing and play the violin. For many years he played in the orchestra for the North Country High School musicals. He was chosen to sing at the Allstate Music Festival in high school, sang with the Northsong chorus, and greatly enjoyed being a member of the United Church of Newport choir. He had a beautiful baritone voice and was asked to sing at many weddings and funerals. He was a Red Cross blood donor who joined the Three Gallon Club in 1958 and continued to donate for many years thereafter. He was a member of the American Legion Post #21 in Newport. Dean was known for his calm demeanor, dry wit and, of course, his distinct and magnificent moustache. When this moustache was combined with cowboy boots, a red bowtie and a stylish suit, Dean cut quite the handsome figure. Dean also loved to travel and made many sojourns through the years. In his twenties he traveled to Europe by ship to visit his friend and hunting buddy Arthur Judd. Early in their marriage, he and Jan traveled cross country twice to see his brother Doug and visit the west coast. Later, despite thinking he was not amounting to much, they wintered in Florida for many years, and had many enjoyable excursions with John and Marge Flood including England and France, Alaska, Bermuda, and a train trip across Canada. For those that knew him, Dean was a mentor, confidante, friend, father, and most important, one half of a 69-year love story with his devoted wife, Janice. He is also survived by his three children, seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. They include his daughter Oralie Lefaivre and her husband Larry of Lyndon Center, VT, granddaughter Libby and grandson Sam; son Bill Palin and his wife Brenda of Barre, VT, granddaughter Chelsea, granddaughter Kiley (Kileybug), and great granddaughter Bryn, and granddaughter Ali; and son Tom Palin and his wife Darlene Powers of Essex, VT, and grandson Tanner and grandson Marsh, as well as his brother Douglas Palin and his wife Emma of Tallahassee, FL. He was predeceased by his brother James Palin and sister Polly Caputo. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 2, 12:00 pm at the United Church of Newport. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the United Church of Newport. Online condolences may be made at curtis-britch. com. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home and Cremation Service, locally family owned and operated. To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Dean A. Barbara Bartley

Barbara Bartley

Age - 86

September 25, 2023

Barbara A. Bartley, 86, of Derby, VT, passed away peacefully September 23, 2023 at her son Jim's home surrounded by her family. She was born December 26, 1936 to Anna (Kelly) and Sylvester McCann in Manchester, CT. Barbara graduated from Manchester High School in 1954 and from Bay Path College in 1958 earning her B. A. in Executive Business. Barbara was married to Winston Bartley Sr. on September 7, 1957. Leaving Connecticut after being married they headed to Cleveland, Ohio, where Winston worked as a Salesman and Barbara being a stay-at-home mother after her first born in 1959. Winston and Barbara went on to have three more children, Winston Jr. , Elizabeth and Jamie. Winston and Barbara did not like to be separated since they had four children that she had to manage on her own. Since Barb had a degree as a business executive and Winston having a MA in Economics, they looked into owning their own business where they could work together. Along came a McDonald's in Derby, Vermont that they offered Winston to build, they packed up the kids and off to Vermont they moved. Barbara went through a culture shock when all she saw was vast cornfields, instead of malls and store lined streets. Barbara did the bookkeeping while Winston ran the restaurants, and after purchasing 5 more McDonald's, Barb took a step back and hired a bookkeeper to help her keep up. Barbara took great pride in all of her flower beds, working endlessly to make the, beautiful and perfect. Barbara loved to cook and was excellent at it. The grandchildren always had decorated cookies for every holiday to bring to their fellow classmates. She worked endlessly at St. Edward's kitchen, cooking for funerals, bazaars, any other functions held at the hall. Barbara had the best time delivering dinner to all the priests at St. Mary's parish, they would be waiting at the door for they were so excited to see what the menu was. Barbara loved to do crafts and they were all beautiful with lots of thought being out into them. The church bazaar would end and she started working right away for the next one. In between working on her crafts, she made quilts for each one of her children and grandchildren, putting in lots of love. Barbara was a very devoted Catholic becoming a Eucharist Minister, no matter what the weather was, she always made sure to bring communion to the sick and the shut ins. Barbara was loving called Saint Barbara for she went to church seven days a week, and was willing to help with anything the church needed. Summertime, besides working in her flower gardens, you could find her at the antique auctions all over the state of Vermont. The antiques she collected furnished all four kid's homes. Barbara made many friends at these auctions and had so much fun, usually she would be the last one bidding and got her deals. Barbara did so much for the City of Newport, working at the Chamber of Commerce, to making a winter wonderland out if the ice-skating shack at Gardner Park. There were endless hours turning the shack into Santa's House. The children were welcomed with hot chocolate and a gift. Barbara played Mrs. Clause and Vern Barry played Santa, and they both loved it and had lots of laughs. Christmas was a special time for her, from cooking huge meals, lots of baking and spending endless hours shopping for a special gift for her children and grandchildren with lots of love and thought going into each gift. Barbara was loved by so many with her smile, laugh and a brilliant sense of humor. She so loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. After talking to her you walked away smiling or laughing, she had a way to spread some cheer. Barbara was a kind soul, but sometimes you would have to watch that Irish Catholic temper when she didn't agree. Barbara is survived by her son Brian of Derby, son Winston Jr and wife Tammy, daughter Elizabeth of Derby, son James and wife Denise of Derby, grandchildren Travis, Logan, Drew, Austin, Meagan, Alyssa, Matthew, Brooke, Bailey, Alexis and Spencer, great grandchildren Madison, Colton, Denver, Carver, Paislee, Paul and Henry. Barabra is also survived by her sister Allison Averill of California and also by several nieces and nephews too many to count. Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband Winton Sr. , her parents Anna and Sylvester McCann and grandson Ronald Kennedy. The family would like to thank Dr. Malk for all the care and compassion shown to our mother, and to her son James and his wife Denise for letting us care for mom in their home, a place where we would congregate in large numbers. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 P. M. on Wednesday September 27, 2023 at the Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Derby. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Thursday September 28, 2023 at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Derby Line with father Rijo Johnson celebrating a mass of Christian burial.
