August 1, 1937 - October 2, 2023 Alice Millett, a beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2023, at her home in Middletown, RI at the age of 86. Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 1, 1937, Alice was the daughter of the late Edward and Edna (Scott) Allcock. Alice dedicated her life to her family and her career as a Tax Examiner in the Federal Government Tax Collection industry. She worked tirelessly to ensure fair and accurate tax assessments, leaving a lasting impact on the community she served. She made some great friends from her job that she cherished and talked to everyday. She always made an impact on everyone who crossed her path. Alice was a woman of many passions and talents. She always had a knack for solving crossword puzzles and her love for crocheting brought warmth to the lives of her loved ones, as she lovingly crafted numerous gifts throughout the years. She had a sharp tongue with a witty personality. She was charming, compassionate and stubborn, sharp as a tack and never missed a beat. She lived life on her own terms. She loved telling detailed stories about her kids growing up and all the funny jokes/riddles she'd come up with. With a playful spirit and a curious mind, Alice enjoyed indulging in tabloid magazines and keeping up with the latest gossip. She found joy in discussing the latest celebrity drama and eagerly debated the hottest topics with family and friends. Alice had a profound affection for her pets, who brought her immeasurable comfort and companionship. She cherished the moments spent with her grandkids and great-grandkids. When she would talk about them she would be filled with happiness with a smile from ear to ear. She loved to cook for you when ever you came over even if you weren't hungry you'd leave full. Survived by her loving children, Steven Byrd, (Aileen) of Holly Springs, NC, James (Victoria) Byrd, of Middletown, William Byrd, (Debra) of PA, Brian Byrd, (Deborah) of Holbrook, NY, Keith Byrd, (Elizabeth) of Waxahachie, TX, Kimberly Byrd Roush, of Hershey, PA. She also leaves 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Alice is also survived by her brother Charles Allcock, of Spring Hill, FL. Alice is preceded in death by her sons Charles Byrd and Robert Byrd as well as her daughter-in-law Cathy Byrd Kramer. Alice's legacy lives on through their success, laughter, and cherished memories. The family will gather to celebrate Alice's life, remembering her vibrant personality, kind heart, and enduring love. On Sunday, October 8, 2023 at the North End Club located at 26 Brookdale Road, Middletown, RI from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Alice Millett will forever be remembered as a compassionate soul with a fierce dedication to her family. She touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.

The Honorable Juliette (Judy) Clagett McLennan, 77, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, died November 15, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. Judy was born in Washington, DC, January 7, 1946. She lived in Chevy Chase, MD; along with Newport, RI; Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Mont Tremblant, Canada; Washington, D. C. Easton, MD; and Portsmouth, R. I. No matter where she lived, she made lifelong friends and made a difference in her communities. She retired from the U. S. Government where she served as The U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women under President George H. W. Bush. She was the first to hold this post as an Ambassador. Prior to this appointment, under President Ronald Reagan, Judy was the Manager of Blair House, which serves as the President's Guest House. Judy was active in Republican politics and served at national, state and local levels in a variety of positions from 1975-2023, including the campaigns for Presidents Ford, Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. Judy was proud to be a Lifetime Associate of the Fraternal Order of Police. In her work at Blair House, the Secret Service enlisted her as a member. She delighted in sharing lunch with her fellow members. She wore her Ferragamo's and they wore tactical boots. They adored her as all her friends did. Throughout her life, Judy was an influential leader in charitable and civic organizations, including the American Heart Association, The Hospital for Sick Children, The Naval War College Foundation, Newport Hospital, Seaman's Church Institute of Newport RI and the Friends of the World Food Program. Her interests in internationalism led her to serve on the Board of the Belfast Children's Summer Program, President of the Committee for a New Ireland, Trustee of the Meridian House International, and a Board Member of the International Center for Research on Women. Her lifelong interest and participation in skiing and sailing led to her positions as a Board Member on the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and as a member of the U. S. Sailing Committee for Sailors with Disabilities. She was an Associate Member of the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance and was once a co-owner of a ski school in Canada. Judy co-founded and served as President of the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. , Memorial Clinic and Regatta for sailors with disabilities. The regatta is named after Judy's father, Tom, who was a U. S. Navy World War II veteran who learned to sail on the Chesapeake Bay. Her numerous awards and recognitions included National Women's Economic Alliance Excellence in Leadership Award 1991; Leadership Maryland, Class of 2001; and one of three awardees of the 2010 Newport Daily News Community Service Award. She received the U. S. Sailing President's Award in both 2003 and 2023. She was awarded the Wild Women of Newport County Award 2013. She was a member of the New York Yacht Club, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Tred Avon Yacht Club, Newport Yacht Club, Clambake Club, Spouting Rock Beach Assoc. , Chevy Chase Country Club, and The Metropolitan Club of Washington, D. C. Her Beloved dogs have been a source of joy and love over many years. Judy was known for her many dogs who accompanied her on numerous road trips and adventures. Judy was an avid gardener and was a member of both the Talbot County, MD, Garden Club and the Newport Garden Club. She was awarded The Oatsie M. Charles Horticulture Award at The Newport Flower Show, The Newport Tree Conservancy has listed her property as the Toad Hall Arboretum. Not only was her garden a riot of color but she held an annual Tulip Party to the delight of her friends and neighbors. Her vegetable garden bore delicious fruits that Judy shared. Many a fun day was spent helping her chop and prepare jams and other delights for canning. Friends also were treated to fresh eggs as Judy built a home for her chickens. It was an apt addition to her life as so many of her friends were like her children, or her own chicks. They loved her as she loved them. Each friend had his or her own special relationship to Judy. She shared her love of life with all who knew her. Her passing has left an irreplaceable hole in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call her their friend. Judy is the daughter of the late C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. , and Nancy Leiter Clagett. She is survived by her daughter Stephanie McLennan, son Travis McLennan, and grandson Dominic J. McLennan. Evelyn Beatrice (Thomsen) Dion, age 97, died November 15, 2023 at her home in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Born in North Providence, she was the daughter of Alma (Benson) Thomsen and Edward Thomsen. She was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Edward G. Dion. Evelyn was the loving mother of Stephen Dion and wife Susan of Bristol, Faye Dion and husband Michael Feldman of Portsmouth and Arline Dyer and husband Alan of Rehoboth, Massachusetts. The pride and joy of her later years were her grandchildren Jared and Joshua Dyer, Dr. Rachel Wozniak and Jessica Feldman, and Amanda, Nicolas and Alyson Dion, all of whom, together with their spouses, doted on her and will miss her sweet, loving presence in their lives. Her great-grandchildren, Luke, Emma, Nadia, Asher, Henry and Sadie called her "G-Ma" and were an endless source of wonder and pride to her. Evelyn's life was long, well-lived and filled with the joy of family. As the matriarch, she played many roles - family historian and link to past generations, the keeper of traditions, head cheerleader for all our endeavors and often just a sympathetic ear. Raymond Jakubiak, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on November 8, 2023, at the age of 53. He was born on July 6, 1970, in Providence, RI, to his late parents, Stanley and Betty (Causey) Jakubiak. Raymond was a true Rhode Islander through and through, proud of his roots in the Ocean State. He spent most of his life in Portsmouth, RI. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1989. Raymond had a passion for sports, especially for his beloved New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox he enjoyed watching with his father. He was known for his enthusiastic cheers and never missed a game. In his spare time, he enjoyed indulging in reality TV, immersing himself in the drama and escapades of his favorite shows. One of Raymond's favorite pastimes was sharing lunch with his mother, cherishing those moments together. He loved nothing more than savoring good food in the company of loved ones. Raymond will forever be remembered and deeply missed by his surviving relatives. He is survived by his loving sisters, Judith A. Michael O'Brien

Chef Michael O'Brien passed away peacefully at Newport Hospital on November 8, 2023. He was 66 years old. He is survived by his wife, Christine Ashley, his stepchildren, Tanzi Archambault and Devin Ashley, stepgranddaughter, Kyandra, and stepgreatgranddaughter, Delilah Archambault. He will also be missed by his beloved sister, Pamela Spuller and her husband, Tom, and niece Bethany. Michael was loved very much by his wife's family in England, brother in laws, Michael Lynn, Anthony Lynn, Peter Lynn, Jim Bailey, sister in laws, Joyce Bailey, June Lynn, Sandra Lynn, Barbara Lynn, and all of their children. In Michael's last years, he recieved much love and support from dear friends, Kathleen Saunders, Lerry Archambault and Stephen Gordon. Michael was born on March 4, 1957 to parents, Geraldine and Donald O'Brien, in Lawrence, MA. Michael graduated from Masconomet Regional High School in Boxford, MA and joined the US Navy in 1975. Michael served for 8 years. Michael was awarded Good Conduct with Bronze Star, Sea Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation with Bronze Star and Navy Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Star. Michael was trained as a chef in the Navy and moved to Newport in 1983. Newport is where he pursued a distinguished career in Culinary Arts, while graduating with honors from Johnson & Wales University. Michael's sister, Pamela noted that he was in the cooking club in high school and remembers that from a young child, baking and cooking were his passions. Michael was a loving and gentle man, devoted to his family and friends, including his "crew" at the Bonnet Shores Beach Club, his last and favorite position as chef. Portsmouth, RI - Alan "Buster" Jesse Souza, 63, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, died peacefully at home on November 12, 2023. He was the husband of Joanne (Reynolds) Souza. Born in Newport, RI on November 15, 1959, He was the son of Jesse and Angela (Providente) Souza. Alan worked for Town of Portsmouth Public Works as an equipment operator for 28 years. During his career he enjoyed 4 of those years as the public works foreman on Prudence Island. After his retirement in October 2013, he spent three years working at Green Valley Country Club as a green's keeper, and another three years with the RI Turnpike & Bridge Authority. Outside of work, Buster was always busy, a social guy, he was out and about visiting friends and family, helping out with anything that was asked of him. He was also a classic car buff, most recently caring for a 1968 Chevy Pickup. Since he was a young man, he adored the Pittsburgh Steelers and was as dedicated a fan as you would meet. He enjoyed the Boston Red Sox through the ups and downs, and enjoyed watching boxing and wrestling. Always busy, he worked out at the ICON Boxing Gym in Bristol and then was a member of the Swansea YMCA where he continued his boxing training, and he developed a great group of friends. Buster enjoyed all kinds of music, especially Alice Cooper, and when he finally sat down at home, he relaxed with the movie classics, especially with Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. Buster loved life, and appreciated everything he had, especially his family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Joanne and his children Brian Souza and Michelle Souza both of Portsmouth. He also leaves five sisters, Sharon Botelho (George) of Newport, RI, Barbara Gonsalves of Bristol, RI, Diane Carlson (James) of Bradenton, FL, Pamela Kane (Sean) of Portsmouth, RI, and Christine Mercier (Roger) of Little Compton, RI, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Alan is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law Michael Gonsalves, James B. Reynolds, and Francis M. Reynolds. Ralph Houtchens

Ralph Houtchens, age 62, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully in his home town on Thursday, November 2nd 2023. Born January 24th, 1961 in Lubbock, Texas, he was the son of late LCDR (Ret) H. P. Houtchens and Norma Lee (Defoor) Houtchens. He was a kind and loving father, son, brother and friend who enjoyed golfing, playing poker, and spending time with those he loved. Ralph grew up in and attended Middletown (RI) Public Schools and graduated from Middletown High in 1980, before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1983. He earned numerous awards and ribbons including the Joint Multi-National Peace Keeping Force patch and ribbon for his service in Beirut, Lebanon following the bombing of the Marine Corps Barracks. Ralph also proudly served as an instructor at the USMC AmTrak School at Camp Pendleton, Ca. , as well as the NCOIC at the Base Pool in Okinawa, Japan. His passion for helping others was exemplified through his work as a licensed massage therapist for many years following his military service. He is survived by his two daughters, Karissa Houtchens of Portsmouth RI, Samantha Houtchens of Richmond, VA, and his siblings Horace Paul Houtchens Jr. , Jocasta Kay Houtchens-Lazo, and Scott Houtchens, as well as numerous other family members and friends. Rita Lynch Wood, 86, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away peacefully at Newport Hospital on November 2, 2023. She was the wife of the late David L. Wood for 63 years. Born in Somerville, MA, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Agnes (Brodie) Lynch. Rita received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Framingham State Teachers College. She then went on to Rhode Island College where she received her Master's Degree in Education and then earned her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study. In 1961, Rita began her career working for Middletown Public Schools as a third-grade teacher, then as the Title One Coordinator and lastly as the Principal of Linden School until her retirement in 1992. She participated in many organizations in various roles as treasurer, secretary and president and updated members of these groups through her extensive newsletters. Some of these organizations included the Middletown Retired Educators' Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Newport County Retired Teachers Association, AAUW, the USS Salamone Association and countless others. While she enjoyed hobbies such as sewing, quilting, knitting, and exchanging letters with an extensive list of pen pals, she was most known for her yearly quotes collection books. Rita is survived by her sons, Michael F. Wood and his wife, Darlene, of Wakefield, Brian P. Wood, of Fort Lauderdale, and Kevin D. Wood and his wife, Lisa, of Middletown. She is also survived by her grandchildren; James Wood and his wife, Bethany, Jessica Domack and her husband, Thomas, Ashley Forleo and her husband, Vincent, Michael Wood, Lauren Wood, Benjamin Wood, Kaitlin Wood, and her great grandsons Jackson, Hudson, and Greyson Domack, Dominic and Enzo Forleo and great granddaughter, Jolene Wood. She additionally leaves a sister, Wilhelmina Currie of Utah. Services will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, with visiting hours from 8:00-9:30 AM in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony's Church, 2836 E Main Rd, Portsmouth. Jean Catherine Winthrop, a beloved member of the Newport community, passed away on November 1, 2023, at the age of 68. Born on October 12, 1955, in Newport, Rhode Island, Jean was a vibrant soul who embraced life with a contagious enthusiasm. Jean dedicated herself to the service industry as a bartender and waitress for over four decades. For the past 20 years, she served her loyal patrons at the Newport Sportsman Club with her Sunday Mudslides, leaving an unforgettable mark on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. With a generous and kind spirit, Jean would gladly lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her unwavering support and dedication shaped her into a cherished friend and family member who was always there to provide a listening ear, a sarcastic remark, or a good laugh. Outside of work, Jean embraced the joy of simple pleasures. Her Tuesday ladies' night dinners and Friday adventures with her friend Lyn, exploring new restaurants and visiting Dave's Market across the bay, were highlights in her life. These moments of enjoyment and companionship were a testament to her zest for life, the bonds she nurtured and her love of a good meal! Jean is survived by her son, Michael Burkinshaw, sister Ellen Wilbur and her husband, Bruce, her sister-in-law, Linda Winthrop, her nieces and nephews, Sharlene, Richard, Amy and her husband, Paul, Jospeh and his wife Carrie, Christine and Tracy, and several great nieces and nephews, all of whom were close to her heart. Jean will also be missed by her chosen family, especially her sister, Lyn Alvernas. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Jean Winthrop, her bother, Joseph Winthrop, her sister, Rita Hamel and her nephew, Patrick Hamel. Jean Catherine Winthrop will forever be remembered as someone who taught us the value of laughter, friendship, and selflessness. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her, and her memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Mathew Marum

Mathew "Max" Marum (1943-2023) Mathew Marum, 80, of Portsmouth, RI, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, 10/22/2023. He was an avid cook, baker, and fisherman, who proudly served in the US Army. He was born in Somerset, MA in 1943 to Amelia (Slusarz) Marum and John J. Marum Jr. , both operators at textile mills in Fall River, and played the organ and piano. Formerly at 139 Walker St. Fall River, he left high school to join the Army on March 3rd, 1960, as a cook in the Vietnam War and stationed, briefly, in Alaska. His passion for cooking lived on. He worked in civil service on the Navy Base in Newport, RI for 30+ years as a cook and baker. Max married Lucy Labonite Marum in 1983 at their house in Portsmouth, RI. Together, they raised their only son, Tim Marum. His grandson "Little Timmy," the love of his life, was always greeted with "There's my little guy!" Timmy loved to visit "PaYa's" house (Grandpa and Yaya's). Yoshi, Timmy's beloved puggle, was greeted with, "There's my buddy!" The late Walter "Junior" Laberge, childhood best friend, who maintained a constant in his life, was always with him; through grade-school, service in the military, and important life events. Robert "Butch" Kinney was a friend and co-worker on the Navy Base "Galley" where they both were cooks, loving to share funny jokes and conduct humorous pranks. Russ, Max's son's best friend, would always be referred to as "he's like my second son!" Max will always be remembered for making (and drinking!) beer with his son and going to the casino. We'll always imagine hearing him say, "My God, almighty," "still breathing. . . and that's all that matters," and, "Ahhh, huhh?" Max was preceded in death by his parents and sister Francis, and is survived by his brother Mike (wife: Gail) and sisters Ronnie (husband: Blackie) and Kathy, and also his son, Tim (wife: Shelby), grandson, Timmy, grandson on the way, James Mathew, and many nieces and nephews. He reunites in heaven with his mom, known to his son as "Baci," and his two dogs, Penny and Snoopy.
