Alice Atkisson Johnson, 71, of Talladega, AL passed away in Anniston, AL on Saturday, September 09, 2023. Mrs. Johnson was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega. She was a former employee of Crown Textiles, Image Yarns, and Griffins Jewelry. She was baptized in the Church of Christ faith when she was just a child and attended Ironaton Church of Christ for most of her life. Mrs. Johnson loved spending time in the mountains and with her grandchildren. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her life. She was a sweet, kind, and loving woman who opened her big heart to everyone. Mrs. Johnson was truly an angel on Earth who was always willing to help anyone. She was a very loving and devoted mother and granny who will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quarley Johnson; father, Dewey "Bob" Atkisson; mother, Mary Samuels; and brothers, Stanley Atkisson and Bobby Atkisson. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Tamika (Bryan) Tubbs; grandchildren, Joshua Hill, Krystal Higgins, Ashley Krueger, and Jonathon (Savannah) McRee; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Perry (Linda) Atkisson, and a host of nieces and nephews. Rachel "Hope" Parks went to be with her Lord on December 5th, 2023 following her long battle with Alzheimer's at the age of 92. She was the widow of Albert Rex Parks who deceased in 1995, and lived most of her life in Manchester Tennessee before developing Alzheimer's where her son Stan moved her to Texas in December of 2011 to a memory care facility close to his home. Hope was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Manchester Tennessee and loved to sing in their choir and so enjoyed her Sunday school group and church family. Her life was a testimony of her Christian faith and love for her Lord. Her kindness and generosity were without limit, always willing to help anyone in need. A native of Talladega Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Henry Harrison Horne, and Willie Tressie (McWilliams) Horne and had 4 sisters of which three are deceased (Jane Dass, twins Louevelyn Perilli and Samuella Woodrow), and 3 deceased brothers (Bill Horne, Joe Horne, and Clayton Horne). Her surviving twin sister Hilda Ruby Moore resides in Pennsylvania. Hope is survived by her two sons, Stan Parks of Rockwall Texas, and Stuart Parks of Corpus Christi Texas; four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. At the age of 50, Hope had a lifelong ambition to obtain a college degree and achieved her goal receiving an Associate of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Motlow State Community College in June, 1982. A quote from Abraham Lincoln is so appropriate at this time- "All I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my loving mother". Funeral services are planned to be held at 1pm on Monday, December 11th at Usrey Brown Service Funeral Home in Talladega Alabama. Burial will immediately follow at Pine Hill Memorial Park, Talladega Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to the Alzheimer's Association. Joyce Simpson Casey, 71, of Talladega, AL passed away in Anniston on Monday, November 27, 2023. A funeral ceremony will be held in her honor at 11:00 A. M. on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega with Earl Sanders officiating. Interment will follow directly after the service at Bethel West Baptist Cemetery in Wedowee. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. Mrs. Casey was a native and resident of Talladega. She was a lifelong member of First Freewill Baptist Church and also attended Harvest Life Church. Mrs. Casey retired from AIDB where she worked as a seamstress. She was a loving and devoted mother and granny. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James E. Casey and Sabie Patterson; parents, Mamer and Dee Simpson; 3 sisters; 3 brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Casey is survived by her children, Patricia Bean (James), James Patterson, and Willie Joseph "Joe Joe" Patterson; grandchildren, J. D. Bean (Alex), Robert Bean, John Bean (Hannah), David Lynn Bean (Cheyenne), Meghan Pope (Dillan), Riley Patterson (Melody), Camilla Snow (Triston), and Dakota Earl (Breanna); great-grandchildren, Delanie Sterling, Josef Sterling, Johnathon Bean, Luca Bean, Lakelynn Bean, and Lynzee Patterson; brother, Lonnie Simpson (Elaine), and a host of nieces and nephews. James Pinckney Whitson, 78, of Talladega, AL passed away on November 24, 2023, of heart failure. James, known as "Jim", was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Jim received his AB in Economics at Davidson College in 1966 while registered in the Reserved Officer Training Program. After graduation, Jim served as a Captain in the United States Army's 3 D Infantry Division, stationed in Wurzburg, Germany from 1966 to 1969. While in Germany, Jim met and married. his beloved wife, Josiane, of 51 years. Jim and Josi then returned to the US where Jim attended Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration earning an MBA with Distinction. Upon Jim's graduation from Harvard, they relocated to Charlotte, NC where Jim was employed by Arthur Andersen & Co and where he and Josi started their family. After eight years with Arthur Anderson, Jim moved on to join ITT Europe, Inc. in Brussels, Belgium as Director, Tax Operations. While in Brussels, Jim and the family found great joy in reconnecting with Josi's family, traveling all over Europe and beyond, enjoying many fine meals, and being heavily involved in scouting and youth soccer. In 1985, Jim completed his assignment in Brussels and was transferred to ITT World Headquarters in New York City, where he rose to Vice President and Director of Taxes. In 1998, Jim accepted the position of Chief Tax Officer of Delphi Automotive Systems in Troy, MI and relocated to Oakland, MI where he and Josi. lived until they moved to Talladega in 2016. Jim loved entertaining, cooking and eating fine food, enjoying great wines, and traveling far and wide. He especially loved spending time with his friends and family over a home cooked meal. Jim had a fierce intellect and a voracious appetite for learning on any subject and was a wealth of knowledge on a wide range of topics. Throughout his life, Jim loved to lend his time, talents, and knowledge to countless causes, individuals, and organizations. Even after a serious illness in 2021, Jim stayed engaged as head of Talladega's Industrial Board and Treasurer of the Talladega Main Street non-profit organization. He is preceded in death by his parents J. Pinckney Whitson and Sarah Totherow Whitson, stepfather J. Carson (Kit) Whitson, and his beloved wife Josiane Vanlerberghe Whitson. He is survived by his son John (Katy) Whitson of Birmingham, AL and his grandchildren Garrett Whitson and Sophie Whitson. A visitation will be held at the Whitson residence in Talladega on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 10:00 to 11:30. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's memory to Talladega First, Inc. - Friends of the Ritz in support of the Historic Ritz Theatre, an organization which he and Josi had supported wholeheartedly.Show more

John Ed Waites, 43, of Talladega, AL passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. His family will receive friends at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega on Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 5:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M. A funeral ceremony will be held in his honor at 1:00 P. M. on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Cherry Street Church of God with Lane Sargent and John Howell officiating. Interment will follow directly after the service at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Waites was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega. He attended Church of the Highlands and spent his entire career working at Waites Construction where he was currently serving as vice president. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and playing his drums. John Ed's incredible character, kindness, and generosity made a huge impact on everyone that met him. He had strong, unwavering faith that carried him through even the most difficult times. He fought a courageous battle with cancer over the last year. He was a loving husband, daddy, and son who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Amber Haynes Waites; daughters, Macy Reece Waites and Ellie Rose Waites; parents, John and Janice Waites; brother, Stephen Tyler (Alecia) Waites, and nieces and nephews, Abigail Waites, Jackson Waites, Camden Dobbs, and Collier Dobbs.
