Alfred David Lawson, Sr. was born May 26, 1949 in Vivian, West Virginia to Connie Robert Lawson and Florence Williams Lawson. He grew up in Kimball, West Virginia. He was the fifth of six children: Peggy Johnson, Gloria Lawson, James Lawson, Carolyn Lawson, and Sharon Barnett. After high school, he received an invitation to West Point, but declined due to the ongoing Vietnam War. Still, he was drafted into the US Army and he served honorably. Upon returning to the United States, he began building a home in Washington, D. C. along with several of his siblings. He was a brilliant man with a keen interest in technology, and he started a business--Modern Electronics Corporation--with his brother, James in 1978. He later found a career with the United States Postal Service and quickly rose through its ranks to become a Computer Engineer and Program Manager. In 2002, he received the Black Engineer of the Year Award. In 2008, he received a patent for inventing an encoding method that reads addresses in the mail. He was a community leader and was elected President of the Board of Directors at Fort Lincoln condominiums. After 36 years with the USPS, he enjoyed 17 years of retirement, moving to Accokeek, MD in 2010. Alfred departed this life on Monday night, June 6, 2022 at Southern Maryland Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Shief Lawson, whom he married on August 5, 1988; his daughter, Emily A. Lawson; his son, Alfred David Lawson, Jr. ; and his granddaughter, Layla Elizabeth Orange.
