Born on October 19, 1928 in McAllen, Texas, Al relocated with his family to Los Angeles, CA in 1935 where he would spend his formative years, until enlisting in the U. S. Navy after the end of WWII at age 19. He proudly and honorably served his country for 20 years until retirement. His journey would take him to the Seven Oaks neighborhood in Rancho Bernardo in 1989 where he would enjoy many post-retirement activities and touch the hearts and lives of many neighbors and friends. He also received achievement recognition awards for his technical expertise on the HOA's architectural review committee. He was also active in local square dancing groups where he would broaden his circle of friends. Al enjoyed the challenge of keeping his analytical and critical-thinking skills sharp by solving complex trigonometry problems out of his old college textbooks, and teaching novices the strategic game of chess. A man of many skills, talents, wisdom and attributes, his highest priority was the care and love he gave to his family, and appreciating the value of relationship building over his lifetime. November 30, 2023

Brett P. Hamiton passed away in his boyhood home on 13 November 2023 in Scripps Ranch, San Diego, California. He was born on 20 November 1967 to Laurie J. Hamilton and James R Hamilton at the dawn of the hippie era. They made their first home in Pacific Beach, California, and because his parents were struggling college students who didn't have two nickels to rub together, his first bed was the bottom drawer of a hand-me-down bureau. And apparently thereafter he never had any trouble sleeping anywhere at any time. Brett was blessed to have two sets of beloved grandparents who lived around the corner from each other: Charles and Laura Levendosky (career US Army) and Joe and Joyce Hamilton (career US Navy). Childcare was never an issue. He started school at the early age of 2 1/2 at the San Diego State Campus Lab Nursery School. He excelled in finger painting and tricycle riding. His teacher said he was a funny little rascal. (His keen sense of humor served him well throughout his life. ) He was graduated from Mira Mesa High School in June 1985 along with a close-knit group of friends who remained friends throughout his college career (City College, SDCCD and Coleman University) and his employment career (Bowser Cabinetry, Costco, Capital One, and Sempra Energy)--from woodworker to software engineer. Brett and Catherine D'Agostino met while attending the same church and after a whirlwind courtship were married on 25 July 1992. They're responsible for contributing two extraordinary young women to the world: Sarah Michelle (now 30) and Jianna Elyse (25). Both of whom grew to appreciate their daddy's love for travel and adventure. Brett played ice hockey throughout his middle school and high school years, but his passion in college and later on in life was for racquetball. He often played daily. And it was difficulty gripping the racquet that eventually led to a diagnosis of a cavernous malformation, a rare neurological disorder. Surgery and many months of physical rehabilitation were ultimately unsuccessful. To use Brett's own words, he "was trapped, not healing, and only getting worse. " He will be remembered and missed. Please join the family in a memorial service at Emmanuel Faith Community Church, 639 E 17th Avenue, Escondido, California 92025, on Sunday 17 December 2023 at 2:00 pm. In 1958, he accepted employment with Harcourt Brace, a New York based college textbook publisher, as a sales representative for the Midwest, where he oversaw a territory of nine states and more than ninety colleges, starting in Ames, Iowa before moving to Edina, Minnesota in 1961. In the summer of 1965, he moved to San Diego, where he purchased a home in the newly developing community of Rancho Bernardo. His service of 20 years was longer thanany previous commissioner, being reappointed by subsequent supervisors due to his integrity and planning acumen. He ran for County Supervisor in 1992 in an effort to continue to advocate environmental causes. In the mid 1980's, Dave was instrumental in the formation of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, a group dedicated to creating a park and trail system from Del Mar to Vulcan Mountain in Julian, known as the Coast to Crest Trail. Today the park is over 70 miles long and is one of the county's largest preservations of natural resources and local heritage. In acknowledgement of his contribution to the River Park, the 990-foot bridge spanning Lake Hodges, the world's longest stress ribbon bridge, was named the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge in May 2009. Dave was an original parishioner at San Rafael Parish and served as an usher for over 20 years. He had a love for travel and enjoyed visiting national parks and spending vacations with his wife and children in Montana, especially Flathead Lake and the Bitter Root Mountains. He also travelled throughout Europe, particularly in France. In his later years, he developed an interest in cruises, and especially enjoyed Alaska. Dave made friends wherever he went and developed many long-standing friendships. He valued good friends and family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lucy transitioned into eternal life moments after hearing the comforting voice of her older sister and best friend, Taifu Shih, by phone. Lucy took the most peaceful final breath. Lucy will be fondly remembered by her family and friends as a joyful, helpful woman who brightened the room with her smile, laughter, and positivity. She lived the last nine years of her life with Marcella, Tony, and grandchildren Kyla and Kaze. She moved in with them after her dear husband of 43 years, Clement Lee, passed away in Michigan, in December 2014. Lucy really appreciated the sunshine and beautiful weather in San Diego. She loved attending her grandkids' activities and celebrating their milestones. Prior to developing Alzheimer's Disease, she would venture out on her own, taking daily walks, chatting with friends in the neighborhood, and visiting people in the local shops who always treated her with kindness. Even as her memory faded, she enjoyed traveling with her family, gardening with her Alzheimer's Companion Claudia, and exploring San Diego with her friend and caregiver Christine. Lucy was born in China on March 15, 1938, to father Hsiao-Peng Feng and mother Xiang-Gu Sun. Her father was a professor at the National Political University in Taipei, Taiwan, and her mother served as an elected official in Taiwan's legislative body. Lucy grew up in Taipei, and was a proud graduate of National Taiwan University School of Law. She was one of only eight women in her graduating class of 63 students. Shortly after, she immigrated to America, obtaining her Masters of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Together, Lucy and Clement dedicated their lives to serving the military community. After Clement retired from the US Army Reserve Center in Waterford, Michigan, he and Lucy remained active volunteers, coordinating Family Support Group events for reservists and their families. Kelly Harkey

Kelly Harkey

Age - 65

November 14, 2023

Kelly Taylor Harkey, M. D. , M. P. H. , F. A. C. O. G. Kelly was a well-respected and beloved OB/GYN physician at Scripps Health and a devoted, loving husband and father. He passed away in his sleep on October 30, 2023, at the age of 65. He was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, the oldest of 3 children. He earned 2 degrees from UCLA and became a fierce fan of all things UCLA. He attended medical school at UCSD, where he fell in love with San Diego. After two years of practicing in Valencia, he moved back to San Diego for good in 1993. Kelly not only delivered thousands of babies and saved many lives over the last 37 years at Sharp Mary Birch and Scripps, but was active in leadership at Scripps. He was one of the longest OB/GYN Department Chairmans, worked on the Quality Council and Peer Review. Recently, he became certified in Perinatal Mental Health with his Nurse-Midwife wife, Sharon, and was a strong and passionate advocate in making it a focus at Scripps, at American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), and beyond. He and his wife became founding board members of the California Chapter of Postpartum Support International in 2020, as the Frontline Provider Liaisons. Although Kelly had little spare time in his life, he did his best to play hard, too. His passions included fishing anywhere, learning to play bass guitar, grilling/smoking/cooking and traveling. Almost every vacation, he would hire a guide to take him to the ideal fly-fishing or deep-sea fishing spots. He made the best paella! He drove his wife crazy pointing out the bass line in every song! He joined the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick to honor his Irish lineage and was his daughters' cheerleader at every Irish Dance competition. He loved trying a new whisky. He was looking forward to seeing Italy next summer since we had to cancel that trip in 2020. He has left behind so many people that loved him! The love of his life, his wife of 22 years, Sharon, and their daughters Rhiannon and Brigit. They will miss him terribly as they navigate upcoming graduations, and life, without him. His older children from his first marriage, Sean and Kristen. His younger sister, Kathleen McGowan, and her 3 sons Patrick, Conor (and family) and Shane. His sisters/brothers in law, nieces and nephews, Cynthia and Woody with daughters Annie-Grace and Katalina (who Kelly delivered), Jennifer and Anthony, Laura and Danny with Eden and Gage. His parents in law, Vern and Marilyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Donna, and his brother, Kevin. He will be greatly missed by his doctor, nurse-midwife, nurse and support staff colleagues at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla and his clinic family at Scripps Clinic, La Jolla Campus OB/GYN. Lastly, he will be mourned by many, many long-term patients that he has known for years or decades. He was constantly being told that he "couldn't retire yet" because they could not imagine finding another doctor. Some he met while they were in college, he delivered their babies, let them cry on his shoulder when they got a divorce and helped them through menopause and becoming a grandmother. He was a master of making his patients feel heard and cared for. He would sit at their bedside and make sure they understood everything that was happening in the hospital and many benefitted from his calming influence, as well as his amazing sense of humor to lighten the situation. He would get spotted like a celebrity at Costco and other public places as he met children/teenagers he delivered. He loved his work but hated the hours! Kelly was a larger-than-life character and there is now a huge hole in the universe! There will be an Irish Wake planned in his honor in a couple months.
