Johnnie Keppel, 79 of Keokuk, IA passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, MO. He was born February 16, 1944 in Keokuk, IA the son of Albert Keppel II and Charlotte Kayser Hays. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1963. Johnnie was a veteran of the United States Army. He was drafted in 1968 at the age of 24. He was there for four months, while leading his platoon he stepped on a land mine. He was injured from shoulder to feet and spent the next six months at Walter Reed Hospital. He then spent his last nine months at Fort Leonard Wood and returned home in May 27, 1970. Johnnie received a Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice and unwavering dedication to our country. On May 23, 1980 Johnnie was united in marriage to Teresa Laffoon in Wayland, MO. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Amanda Mastin (Wade) of Boone, IA and Chastity Kearns (Chris) of Montrose, IA, one son, Gary Keppel (Heather) of Louisiana, seven grandchildren: Krystal Keppel, Andrea Lutes, Valerie Keppel, Alexandria Mastin, Madison Kearns, Logan Kearns and Maya Kearns. Two step-grandchildren, Mitchell Mastin and Mason Mastin, and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Albert Keppel III (Kathleen) of Keokuk. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-dad, Roy Hays and one daughter in infancy, Rachelle. Johnnie had been employed by Fruehauf from 1968 until the company's closure in 2001. Johnnie was a talented woodworker and made all types of furniture and wood projects. He enjoyed listening to music and was an excellent dancer. Johnnie was a classic car enthusiast and had a '68 Chevy Camaro convertible that he was very proud of. He loved to enter it in car shows and drive it in parades. A memorial service will be held at 1 p. m. , Friday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Dave Barrett officiating. Burial with military rites will be held in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 1 p. m. , Thursday, at the funeral home with family meeting with friends from 5-7 p. m. Michael "Mike" Lee Belton, 72, of Keokuk, IA died unexpectedly Thursday, November 30, 2023 at his home. He was born on February 24, 1951 in Carthage, IL, the son of Floyd and Marvelle Mott Belton. He was one of two children to the couple. He graduated from Hamilton High School with the class of 1969. Mike resided in Hamilton until the time of meeting his wife and moved to Keokuk, IA. Mike did not know a stranger while growing up downtown Hamilton and was notorious for his antics. Mike was united in marriage to Pamela Boley on December 12, 1981 in Keokuk, IA. She preceded him in death on February 28, 2017. He is survived by one son Brandon Belton (Beth) of Honolulu, HI, Jenny Carlson of Kahoka, the daughter they did not have, his caretaking nephew, Dion Gregory, nieces and nephews and special great nieces and great nephews. Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sheila Gregory. Mike had been employed by Henniges for twenty-two years until his retirement. Mike enjoyed watching all sports especially baseball and football and an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs fan. He followed all area teams, but especially the Hamilton Cardinals/West Hancock Titans football. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a. m. , Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA. Burial will be Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, IA. Kenneth "Kenny" P. Martinez, 78 of Keokuk, IA passed away after complications with Leukemia on Monday, November 27, 2023 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, IA. He was born October 16, 1945 in Keokuk, IA the son of Pedro and Alice Olvis Martinez. Kenny graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1964. On February 27, 1965, Kenny was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Judy Lemon at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Keokuk. They celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage. She survives. Other survivors include, one daughter, Tina Martinez, one son, Ken Martinez (Betsy) and five grandchildren, Cora, Maximo, Nakai, Sophia and Ilsa. He is also survived by two sisters, Juana Johnson of Eugene, OR and Diana Martinez of Keokuk, one brother, Robert Martinez of Centerville, IA, two sisters-in-law, Mary Lantz of Jacksonville, FL and Sharon Lemon of Keokuk, many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Toni Martinez, four brothers-in-law, Jim Lemon, Chuck Lantz, James Camper and Richard Johnson and one sister-in-law, Theresa Martinez. He was a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 91 for fifty-three years. He served for ten years as business agent for Local 91. He was a master craftsman specializing in pattern making and design. Kenny was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports and spending time with his family. He never knew a stranger and made everyone feel welcome. Later in life, his greatest joy was being with his grandchildren. He was lovingly known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren. He was an enthusiastic fan of all his grandchildren's sporting and academic events. He also enjoyed making crafts for Hawthorne School and for his daughter's first grade classes in Vinton, IA. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a. m. , Saturday, at All Saints Catholic Church with Reverend David Brownfield, Ph. D. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p. m. , Friday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with family meeting with friends at that time. Marilyn Walte, 85, of Keokuk, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, at her home in Keokuk, Iowa. Marilyn was born on July 1, 1938, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of John and Kathryn (Diamond) Landman. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1956, and in November of 1958, she was united in marriage to Joseph "Milton" Walte. He preceded her in death on March 27, 2020. Marilyn was a bookkeeper for J. C. Penney for many years until they closed, then went to work for RW Cardella until her retirement. She was a homebody, and loved gardening, crafting, decorating and baking. Marilyn took great pride in her house and was constantly working on it. In her younger years, she enjoyed vacationing with Milton, traveling to every national park in the United States. Marilyn is survived by her son Joseph (Tresa) Walte of Bonaparte, Iowa; four grandchildren: Joseph Walte of Salem, Iowa, Caitlyn (Austin) Kupka of Waterloo, Iowa, Justin Walte of Missouri and Camryn Walte of Davenport, Iowa; Four great-grandchildren: Brecken Walte of Salem, Cassidy Kupka of Waterloo, Wyatt Kupka of Waterloo and Atticus Walte of Fort Madison; her sister Joan Martin of La Mesa, California; two bonus grandchildren; eight bonus great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Milton, her son Jeffrey "Jeff" Walte, her grandson Jonathon Walte, and her sister Jean Hannrahan. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Lois Ilene Wixom, 91 of Keokuk, IA passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 22, 1932 in Mt. Sterling, IA the daughter of Archie and Bertha (Pruitt) Cochran. Lois graduated from Revere High School with the class of 1950. Lois was united in marriage to the love of her life, James Leonard Wixom on January 2, 1950. "Wix" preceded her in death on March 17, 2012. She is survived by three children, Steve (Karla) Wixom, Debby (Jim) Mueller and Cindy (Jim) Hardin, ten grandchildren, Kristy (Lance) Boatman, Kim Cannon, Matt (Dailyn) Wixom, Kourtney (Ben) Brissett, Mia Mueller, Misti (Scott) Maidel, Austin (Shauna) Hardin, Adam Hardin, Andy (Ashley) Hardin and Archie Hardin and fifteen great-grandchildren, Kolton, Kenton and Kaylynn Summers, Kendra Boatman, Kailey, Kyler, Karley and Kaitey Cannon, Nolan Wixom, Millie and Nick Brissett, Tayli Maidel, Isaiah Hardin, Colby and Parker Hardin. Lois is also survived by her brother, Ronald (Rovene) Cochran and one sister, Twila (Delbert) Harper along with other very special people in her life, Donna (Dale) Wixom and Candy (Mike) Mueller and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, Wilma West, Jeanie Sartori and Irma Ellen Cochran and two brothers, Robert Cochran and Stanley Little. Lois had previously been employed by Delaney Cleaners and was the director of the Keokuk Child Daycare Center for twenty-five years. She was the co-owner of Wixom Framing and had also managed the George M. Verity for nine years. She was a devout member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Keokuk, where she taught Sunday school. She was also involved in the Mary Larson Circle, Emmanuel United Methodist Women and numerous other offices within the church. Lois was the president of Wells Carey PTA, den mother for Cub Scouts, Genealogy Society, Swing Easy Square Dance Club, Swing Easy Memorial Foundation, Keokuk Area Hospital and hospice volunteer. She was recognized with an award from the Governor of the State of Iowa for her volunteer services. Lois had incredible sewing abilities. She used her talent to not only make her daughters' wedding dresses and quilts for her loved ones, but to also give to others. Over the years, she made and donated over seven hundred dresses for the children in Nepal, Haiti and Africa, lap robes for Veterans, pillowcases for children with cancer at the University of Iowa Hospital, bibs for nursing home patients, complete bedding sets for foster care children and blankets for hospice. Lois was an avid card and game player and enjoyed playing with friends and family, normally coming out as the winner. She loved traveling, going to horse races, boat rides on the Mississippi and watching sporting events. Most important to her was spending quality time with her family and her beloved cat, Marble. A funeral service will be held at 11 a. m. , Monday, at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 1129 Exchange Street, Keokuk with Dr. J. Robert Burkhart officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p. m. , Sunday, at the Vigen Memorial Home 1328 Concert, Keokuk, with family meeting with friends at that time. Minote Mae Monical was born to Amos Elmer and Lulu Esther (English) Monical on July 1st, 1930, in Keokuk, Iowa. She was baptized into the United Presbyterian Church (2nd), along with her siblings, in Keokuk on April 16th, 1933. She was a life-long resident of Keokuk, Iowa and had lived at 1701 S. 7th Street her entire life, until her recent move to the Center in Montrose. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1948. She worked for many years at and retired from her position as a bookkeeper at the J. C. Penney store in Keokuk. Minote was preceded in death by her parents, her brother George Edward Monical, and sisters, Kathryn Marcella Monical (Robert) Edwards, Lulu Agnes Monical (John) Kavanaugh, Hazel Electa Monical, Mary Ruth Monical (Wayne) Riter, Patricia Louise Monical, Betty Jean Monical (Bob) Rench and sisters-in-law Mary Madeline Bowden (Ed) Monical and Dawn Marie Ritter (Ed) Monical. She is survived by several nieces and nephews who all remember her fondly. Her services will be held Thursday, November 9th, with the visitation at 11:00am to be held at the DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home located at 917 Blondeau Street in Keokuk. A procession will leave from the Funeral Home after the visitation concludes. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 pm at the Oakland Cemetery located at 1800 Carroll Street, Keokuk with the Pastor Dave Barrett as the officiant.
