December 8, 2023
Margaret "Peg" (Carney) Kane, 93, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023. She was born in Springfield on April 5, 1930, to Maurice and Bridget (Daley) Carney. Peg graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947 and worked in several positions before retiring from her career as a paraprofessional in the Springfield Public Schools. In 1951, Peg married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Gerald "Brud/Jerry" J. Kane, with whom she was absolutely smitten. Together they made a life she loved raising a family in Springfield, retiring to a home they had built on Drake's Island in Maine, and later returning to Wilbraham, MA, where they were surrounded by family. Peg and Brud loved to travel and had many adventures that took them across the globe. The locations that meant the most to her were the Great Blasket Island and Slea Head in southwest Ireland, the area from which her parents emigrated. Peg and Jerry loved the beach whether it was in Maine, Florida, or Massachusetts. She loved children and would often boast about her own large family. She was known for her cooking, there was rarely a night without a homemade dessert in her home, and many favorite recipes will live on through her family. Peg is predeceased by her beloved husband, Brud; her parents, Maurice and Bridget Carney; brothers, Maurice and John; sisters, Mary (O'Keefe), Patricia, Nancy (Shea), and Joan; brothers-in-law, William O'Keefe, Charles Dusel, Edwin Shea; sister-in-law Beverly Kane (Ferris), and her husband Tim. Peg is survived by her six children Nancy LaBrie and husband Robert of Springfield; Gerald Kane, Jr. and wife Deborah of Springfield; Mary Campbell and husband Trant of East Longmeadow; James Kane and wife Jean of Longmeadow; Brian Kane of East Longmeadow; and Margaret Assad and husband Joseph of Holyoke. She leaves behind her 10 cherished grandchildren, John LaBrie (Cheryl), Kevin LaBrie (Maria), Thirza Lareau (Craig), Gerald Kane III (Cynthia), Stephen LaBrie (Nicole), Maggie Pereiras (Keith), Christina Kane (Mani), Joseph Assad (Jennifer), Brian Kane (Kitty), and Mary-Leah Messenger (Brian). Peg was "Gigi" to 22 great-grandchildren, a number for which she was extremely proud. She is also survived by her two sisters, Eileen Dusel of Ludlow, and Barbara Ashe and her husband Michael of Enfield, CT. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Francis Murray and his assistant Liz, personal care assistant Tracey, and the staff of East Village Place and Brookhaven Hospice for their dedication to her care.
