Mary Louise Barnes Oct 3, 1931 - Dec 1, 2023 In profound sorrow, we announce the graceful departure of Mary (Smail) Barnes of Enfield, who peacefully passed away at Hartford Hospital on Friday, December 1st, at the age of 92. Born on October 3rd, 1931, in Sharon CT, Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Willard and Hazel Smail and the devoted wife of the late Donald W Barnes. Affectionately known as Nana, Mary was the heartbeat of our family, the gentle matriarch whose kindness and compassion touched every soul she encountered. Nana's home was the sacred haven where holidays transformed into extraordinary celebrations of love and togetherness for five generations. Mary's love for art blossomed into a lifelong passion when she met her husband and soulmate at the Hartford Art School in 1950. A dedicated member of the Tobacco Valley Artists Association, Mary's artistic spirit thrived as she painted canvases that spoke of beauty and emotion. She found joy in attending art shows and exploring museums, leaving a vibrant imprint on the artistic community. For many years, Mary dedicated herself to Enfield High School as an assistant librarian, retiring in 2000, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of countless students. Long after retirement, Mary and her tightly knit group of coworkers would meet for lunch and excursions around the world. Her zest for life and curiosity led her love of travel, and in her golden years, she embraced the serenity of the senior center, indulging in the disciplines of Yoga and Thai Chi. Mary's courage was unwavering, and her will to survive was a testament to her resilient spirit. Throughout her illness, she radiated positivity, happiness, and an enduring love for mocha lattes from Dunkin'. Mary, the proud mother, leaves behind a legacy of love through her firstborn daughter Lisa Kozak of Enfield, her only son Daniel Barnes and his wife Dale of Strafford New Hampshire, and her devoted daughter and caregiver, Bonnie Pepper of Enfield. She is survived by her six loving granddaughters Melanie Maloney, Heather Johnson, Mackenzie DiNallo, Jimilee Pepper, Summer Barnes, Raven Barnes, and grandson Michael Kozak. Mary's spirit continues through her five great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandson with a soon to be great-great-granddaughter joining the family. She is also fondly remembered by her niece, Terry, and her extended family. We take comfort as Mary reunites with her husband Donald Barnes, sister Billie Tanona and son in law Mike Kozak, along with her parents Willard and Hazel Smail . A long-standing member of St. Martha's, Mary found solace in more recent years attending weekly online sermons at the Enfield Congregational Church, bridging her faith with the challenges of the pandemic. The family would like to thank the Nursing staff and Doctors of Hartford Healthcare as well as the amazing visiting nurses that supported Mary through her illness and gave her hope over the last year. The family will accept friends on Friday, December 8th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Browne Memorial Chapels, 43 Shaker Road in Enfield. A mass of Christian burial will follow on Saturday, December 9th, at 11:00 am at St. Martha's Church, 214 Brainard Road in Enfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mary (Smail) Barnes, our Nana, leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and indomitable strength. In honoring her memory, let us remember not the tears that fall but the smiles she gifted us, the warmth of her embrace, and the enduring love that will forever echo in our hearts.Show more
