Donna Modzelewski

Donna Modzelewski

Age - 79

December 11, 2023

Donna Vale Modzelewski passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023. Donna was born in Kermit, TX on January 23, 1944, the daughter of the late Erwin "Dutch" Werthamer and Norma (Bailey) Werthamer. The family moved to Agawam, MA shortly after her birth where Donna would live the rest of her life. Donna graduated from Agawam High School in 1961 and went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in elementary education from Bridgewater State University. After college, she started her teaching career at Phelps School in Agawam and went on to teach 3rd grade at James Clark School until her retirement in 2008. To this day, many of her students will tell you what a great teacher she was and what an influence she had on their lives. Donna married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Modzelewski in 1966 and they spent the next 55 years together as husband and wife until Joe's passing in 2021. In their time together, they had 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Donna, always one to put other people first, loved spending time with family and friends. Whether it was the beach in Narragansett, Disney World, family reunion weekends, or her trips to Florida with her sisters, as long as she was with her family she was happy. Although she loved teaching, Donna's favorite role was taking care of her grandchildren after retirement. They brought so much joy to her life, and she always said they filled a hole in her heart that had been there since her son passed away. She was at every event or competition for her grandchildren no matter what. Donna was a lifelong active member of Agawam Baptist Church serving as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon there. Donna's faith was very important to her and she could always be found every Sunday morning in one of the front pews. Donna could often be found having lunch or walking on the treadmill at the Agawam Senior Center, relaxing on her couch with her beloved grand-pets, Ozzie, Bella, and Betsy, or if you needed her on a Thursday night, you could find her at the Buccaneer Lounge having dinner with her good friends, her "Thursday night crew" as she called them. Donna was a loving wife, mom, grandma, aunt, sister, and friend. Besides her parents and husband, Donna was predeceased by her son Danny in 1982 and her sister Wendy Oppenheimer. We take comfort in the fact that Donna is reunited with her lost family members once again. To cherish her memory, she leaves her children Karen Carrier and her husband Doug of Agawam and Joseph Modzelewski and his wife Jenni of Feeding Hills; her grandchildren Reid Carrier and their partner Acer, and Donna Carrier along with their cousin, Maggie, who Donna always saw as another grandchild; her sisters Lisa Courtney and her husband Paul and Lynn Werthamer and her partner Al Maiolatesi; her brothers-in-law Bob Oppenheimer, and Edward Modzelewski along with his wife Nancy; many nieces and nephews; her friend Sandy, as well as many other lifelong friends. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 4 - 7 PM at Colonial Forastiere Funeral & Cremation, 985 Main Street, Agawam. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 beginning at 8:45 AM at the funeral home followed by a service at First Baptist Church, Main Street, Agawam at 10 AM.
